Jim got straight to work. Usually, first lessons I walk away with nothing but Jim gave me drills. Jim wanted to teach me about golf not just to see where I was in my golf game. I will be continuing my work with Jim he is amazing.

I started learning how to play golf in my freshman year of high school, and knew nothing or had any interest of the sport. But with Dave's passion in the game and in helping me, I started to become more interested in the game, which led me to be on the Varsity Golf Team for my sophomore year. I eventually became the Varsity Captain for the golf team starting my senior year in high school. Dave is not only a golf instructor but also a mentor in helping me and my personal struggles and growth as a teenager back in high school. Four years later, I'm graduating college this year and still keep in contact with Dave by going out on the golf course or just catching up! Dave is a great teacher and friend, and I'm confident that he can be your's too!

Great learning experience with Ric. Never understood the proper mechanics of a good golf swing until now. Just from my first lesson I have already gotten rid of my terrible slice.

Ron is professional, personable, and very knowledgeable about fitness, the golf swing and the game itself. On the range, he's great at breaking down a swing and giving you information you can understand, absorb & execute, helping you maximize your ability (regardless of how limited that may be, like in my case). As a player, he understands how to manage a course and is great at showing you how to work your way around and play to your strengths, lowering your scores. He does the same with your diet and exercise regimen (or lack thereof). Small tweaks here and there that build upon each other, helping you feel and perform better than you thought possible - not just in golf but in life. SO happy I found top caliber coaching with Ron - such a deal!

I took Jay's 5 lesson package and was impressed on how clear and simple Jay communicates the mechanics of the golf swing and how to correct your swing when it goes awry. Jay was very methodical in his instruction which made me understand that if I followed the instructions I would get the desired result.

Jenn is amazing! She is always looking for ways to help me understand the biomechanics behind my golf swing. As an athlete it is a really frustrating to pick up a sport that does not require strength or agility to excel. She gets it!!! And helping me get rid of the bad habits that I have developed because I am used to playing other sports! She gives drills and helpful tips to help me develop my swing. The half hour time frame is perfect because she is specific each lesson on the areas I need to work on. I cannot say enough amazing things about her! I am blessed to have found her!

I am on my fifth lesson with Paul and he is simply great! Not coming from a golf background he has really helped me understand and develop the fundamentals of a solid golf swing. He is patient and doesn't overwhelm you with knowledge at the onset. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to improve their golf game, and I will continue to use Paul as my golf instructor!

Hi, my name is Austen and I'm a senior in high school and I'm currently on the high school golf team. I'm one of Lee's students and I've been working with him for about five months now. I can surely say that I have seen a significant difference in my golf game, and I've been playing for twelve years! Lee has given me excellent playing tips and lessons and now I'm saving at least 6-10 strokes per round! Lee is an excellent coach all around and I surely recommend working with him!

My son started out as a little guy with Joe about 10 years ago. I have observed each weekly session. Not only does Joe have in-depth knowledge of the golf swing, course strategy, just all thigs related to golf, he has an innate ability to relate to and tailor his instruction to the individual. He instructed and provided drills for my son on those aspects of the game he could grasp as a youth and elevated the instruction as he grew older. With Joe’s tutelage and their hard work my son has become an accomplished high school golfer with an eye towards college golf. Joe is a true golf professional that can help you improve the game you have or if you want he can help you strive towards competitive golf. Joe can help you with club selection. Joe’s fees are reasonable considering the professional services he renders and his credibility as a local college coach. Punctuality and time are always adhered to by Joe. Not only is Joe a great golf instructor, he is a nice guy.

I had 4 coach’s to chose from. I chose Tony because I was impressed with his profile. It was what I was looking for. I wanted a coach who would work with my weakness and not try to teach me a new swing. I am an intermedant golfer (20yrs) and had acquired a few bad habits. Tony immedantly saw these weaknesses and was able to instruct me on repairing those bad habits. Tony was patience and very informative. He knows his course management and incorporated that in his coaching. I was very pleased with Tony. He did everything I expected. His coaching was true to his profile. I look forward to another session with Tony.

I had five different golf instructors before I started working with Ryan. I had success of sorts from each of the prior instructors and do not have anything negative to say about any of them. They were all good guys. What I can say about Ryan is that the way he communicates has had a marked effect on not only my swing but the way I have started to understand the golf swing as it relates to my body and my capabilities. Ryan did not try to make me into something I am not. He has allowed me to get more from what I have. That works.

I met Bob Cisco at a Golf Show about eight years ago. He was advocating his "Short Game Boot Camp" one day lesson program. I tried it and learned a lot about pitching, chipping and putting from off the green with an iron. At the time, I was taking regular lessons frpm a golf pro at Industry Hills Golf Course. My progress was slow at best. I then took some lessons from Golf Tech where I learned to visualize my swing, but did not see a substantial reduction in my score. Then a few years back, I contacted Bob Cisco to discuss a series of lessons both at the range and on the course. Since then, my golf pals have noticed a marked improvement in the smoothness of my swing and my ability to make much better ball contact. As a matter of fact, the best golf compliment that I ever received was from one of the golf pros at the Tustin Ranch Golf Club during a Demo Days. He remarked how smooth my swing was and asked who my pro was. I told him it was Bob Cisco who taught me this swing. Keep in mind, I am no youngster. I am 69 years old and have only been playing for 12 years. Bob transmits his golfing knowledge and swing thoughts in a very easy to understand manner. His catcher's mitt technique for bringing the club back in the backswing has been one of the major breakthroughs in my game improvement. He has a way of taking complex swing thoughts and simplifying them for easy execution. My scores hace been dropping and just recently scored a personal best of 85. Thank you Bob Cisco! S. Max is an incredible teacher. He takes pride in what he does. He understands the mechanics of the golf swing. Max doesn’t use a bunch of mystical terms and gobbledygook like some golf instructors. He understands how the body works and the biomechanics behind the ideal swing and knows how to share that ideal with his clients. I like Max’s demeanor and relaxed approach. There are no smoke and mirrors — the swing Max teaches, if practiced, is repeatable and reliable under pressure. As a golfer, that is probably the most important thing: being able to develop a repeatable, reliable swing that holds up in pressure situations. I would recommend Max to anyone (except the guys in my regular foursome, because I don’t want them improving like I know they inevitably would if they started taking lessons from Max). Haha. Max is worth every penny.

This is the only man that I trust with my golf swing. I've been working with "Nav" for over 5 years and he has lead me to high school mvp and college conference winner. Great gentleman. Fair prices. Great knowledge.

Like most people, I've messed around with Golf since I was a kid but it was never something I really competed in. My go to sport was baseball. I played competitively through college, pitching for the Nationally renowned Cal State Fullerton Titans. After my baseball career wound down I spent the next decade plus focusing on family and career still playing golf every-once and a while. Normally a scramble at a work related function. It was always nice to get back onto a course, take in the scenery and pray to God that I didn't slice every shot off the course. Inevitably the slice would show it's ugly face and I'd feel like an idiot in front of colleagues, frustrated at the game of golf wondering how it's possible that I could be so bad hitting a stationary ball. Finally fed up with the game making a fool of me I decided to seek out professional help. After searching online I found Bill at the Temecula Valley Golf School. After reaching out and talking to Bill I was initially impressed with his people skills, his ability to speak "my language" and his confidence that "WE" could improve my golf game. My first day with Bill was embarrassing. I looked like I'd never played a sport in my life. Bill didn't flinch. Somehow his confidence carried over to me and I decided to sign up for the Membership Program; which is an incredible value. A couple months in my golf hack has quickly morphed to look much more like a golf swing. My swing has gotten easier, my distances are amazing, and my trajectory is getting consistently straighter. I now have confidence that becoming a legitimate...like scratch legitimate golfer, is well within reach. I'm grateful to have Bill in my corner.

Les provided me with some very good insight as to how I was swinging my clubs. His method of finding your "Natural Swing" has been very helpful for me. I am getting better at knowing that I can count on a straight ball rather than not knowing where the ball is going to go.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What makes a good golf instructor?

A good golf instructor is someone who has the playing skill you’d like to achieve, is qualified to teach golf, and is someone you can get along with. Some experts recommend you only take golf lessons from coaches with active accreditation from reputable associations such as the PGA, LPGA, or similar organizations that focus on continuing education. You’ll be spending hours out on the green with the pro during lessons, so a good rapport, strong communication and the right personality fit are key. A proven track record is also important. Read reviews from their current and former students to make sure they have helped people achieve their golfing goals, and always ask about the instructor’s experience before signing on for lessons. Years of providing lessons can contribute to a deeper understanding of how to teach the sport. Just because your friend or partner is great at golf doesn’t mean they’ll give good golf lessons. Invest in a professional golf instructor who knows how to teach the sport from short game to full swing.

How much are golf lessons?

Golf lessons are a great way to break into the sport or take your golf game to a new level. The national average cost for golf lessons is $50-$60, but prices will vary based on what type of lessons you want. The most expensive golf lessons will be private instruction with top-tier coaches. These are golf instructors who have held high professional ranking and have a good reputation. Regardless of who is teaching, private instruction is always more costly than couples’ lessons or small group lessons (usually up to four people). Teachers often offer a lower price per lesson when you buy a package of several lessons at one time. Here are some examples of average golf lesson costs:

  • Individual lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 60-minute private lesson: $60.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $100.
  • Couples’ lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 90-minute duo lesson: $100.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $125.
  • Golf lesson package pricing:
    • Purchase six individual lessons at one time and save $10.
    • Purchase 10 individual lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase six couples’ lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase 10 couples’ lessons at one time and save $200.

What age should you start golf lessons?

Golf lessons for kids can start as early as age four or five. They’re too young for formal training, but you can keep them interested and engaged and give them a feel for the game. U.S. Kids Golf recommends starting formal training for junior golfers at six years old. It’s important for young golfers to swing clubs that are the right length and weight for their body; U.S. Kids Golf provides a fitting guide.

Golf lessons for kids, especially young kids, should be about encouraging success rather than correcting mistakes, according to U.S. Kids Golf. If you want your child to love golf for life, you want their early experiences to be positive. Golf lessons for kids are less expensive than golf lessons for adults. A monthly rate (including four lessons) for group golf lessons for kids may average $100. Semi-private golf lessons for kids may range from $150 to $200 per month. Location and instructor reputation can also affect cost. Often, discounts are provided when multiple months are purchased at one time.
