We had an absolutely perfect and pleasant time working with Chef Arturo and his wife, Martha. We are located in the South Bay, CA and they're located in Northern California in Sacramento. First of all, we had a 400 person wedding. From their initial reach out to last interaction we never ran into an issue. We were invited into their home for a tasting and they value getting to know who they're going to serve before the event. I appreciate as an event coordinator that they require they visit the facilities before the event as well so that everyone is on the same page. The most compliments we received about our wedding was about the food. It's not easy preparing quality food for this amount of people, and every single person was satisfied with the appetizers and buffet style dinner that was served. They worked within our payment plan suggestions, kept in contact over the months leading up to the wedding, worked well with our wedding coordinator, and easy pulled this event off without expressing any type of stress towards us (the bride and groom). If we ever have a larger event that needs catering again, we will be using our new friends, Arturo and Martha.

We had been in contact since the first week of July. He consistently updated our correspondence by phone and e-mail. So very reliable. The event was for a 100th birthday party. Boris had every detail done to perfection. The buffet tables were lovely and many guests informed me of the "great" food. I cannot give enough praise to Boris and his "crew". They were all just delightful and so very accommodating, timely, professional, and the food served in a very attractive manner. We certainly recommend his services. We had our 7/2/16 wedding catered by C's BBQ and Chris & Dotty did a superb job, not to mention the food was delicious!!! Let me start by saying that Chris is a great communicator! He quickly responded to all my emails and his responses always put my mind at ease. With all the stress of wedding planning, the one aspect that I felt confident about was the food. And speaking of, we offered a buffet that included brisket, which can be tricky if not done right, but Chris did not fail to deliver. Not only was the brisket raved about, the chicken was moist and tasty, the chipotle baked beans were devoured, the potato salad was fantastic, the mac & cheese was creamy, and the cornbread was the perfect balance of sweet, savory & yummy! We ordered enough to feed 100, and had more than enough food. At the end of dinner, Chris & Dotty discretely broke down the buffet (professional stainless steel chaffing dishes), packaged up the leftovers and stored them in the refrigerator for us to take home and enjoy later. We can't thank them enough for helping to make our BIG day shine! We continue to receive compliments on the great food and the professionalism of Chris & Dotty and If you're considering BBQ for your wedding, you can't go wrong with C's BBQ! Cheers! We hired Cowabunga BBQ for our daughter's High Graduation / 18th birthday celebration on 5/27/2017. Cowabunga BBQ was absolutely fantastic to work with. The food was beyond delicious; all of the guests were raving about how wonderful everything they prepared was. We could not decided if the potato salad, mac & cheese or the tri-tip was the favorite. Even more than that though was how incredibly wonderful and professional David and his amazing daughter Megan was. The food was delicious and top notch: the staff are friendly and so so helpful. Any event we host needing a caterer will be Cowabunga BBQ.

Polkadot Dinners is our favorite caterer. Rachel is one of the most professional caterers I know in the area. Her food is absolutely amazing and her presentation of her display of food just ties in with the theme of her menu which is a added plus. Definitely within anyone budget she can make it happen. Highly recommended.

Mimi and her staff were amazing; they by far exceeded my expectations. My safari baby shower was more than I ever hoped for because Mimi took the time to find out what was important to me and made it happen. Mimi was responsible for everything from set up, decorations, catering, games and cleanup. She and her very professional staff came into my home 4 hours prior to the party and transformed our living and dining room into a real safari jungle! She even hand made the party favor bags and they were so adorable. My guests were so amazed and had an amazing time. I can't wait to hire Mimi again soon!!! I must comment also on her staff: I felt like they were part of our family. They all brought the personal touch and were here at our service. The warmth and personality of her staff are beyond description.

Grace was very easy to work with. Because of the demands of my daily schedule, she was wonderful about communicating via email, which I greatly appreciated. We had a tight timeline for our event and I was worried about getting everyone fed. Grace was able to feed 300+ people in 1.5 hours! She was amazing and everyone loved her food. The custom Mexican platters she uses are absolutely beautiful and add lovely decor to any buffet table. Though I don't plan to host a 300+ person event again soon, I definitely hope to work with Grace again for a smaller event in the near future!

Two Moms Catering did our wedding and cake. The most amazing was that we are vegans and wanted to have a buffet with vegan and some gluten free. The food was "AMAZING" , the service was superb and the presentation was outstanding!! Everything was fresh and seasoned to perfection. They even did our wedding cakes one Vegan and one Gluten Free, both were beautiful, moist and delicious!!! Two Moms Catering will be our first. Pice again and again, and we would recommend them to our family and friends!

I put together a team building for my company at William Land Park and the Burgess Brothers not only delivered but went over and above. The food was delievered hot and before the desiginated time. It was even delivered by one of the Burgess Brothers themselves. My co-workers could not stop raving about all the food especially the brisket, pulled pork and corn bread. My manager liked the food so much that he took his family there the next day for lunch. My office is actually planning another trip the resturant for lunch very soon. Keep up the great work Burgerss Brothers Burgers! We will definately use you in the future =)

I couldn't have asked for a better experience having Chrysalis Catering working my son's graduation party. Tameeka had great communication skills. She always kept in contact with me before and during the event. She was professional and attentive to the needs of the party and made sure the meal was prepared on time. My guests were also impressed with Tameeka and asked for her card to cater their future events. This was the first time I used this app and my wife and I were pleasantly surprised. Chrysalis Catering is top notch.

And, what I appreciate most about Magpie Productions is her variety of dishes that range from Southern to gourmet. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
