I am extremely pleased with the entire job. After installing the dry wall, I wanted to paint before finishing the floor. They held off on finishing the job for two days. An act of kindness I don't believe most in a-hurry-to-complete contractors would have afforded me.

Todd installed two screens for me, one was a security front screen door and the other was a French Door screen. He also installed new light bulbs in my overhead kitchen lighting. He checked to determine if I needed a new ballast, which wasn't the case. Further, he changed smoke alarm and Co2 batteries and cleaned and regrouted my shower floor. Todd is very personable and professional with many years experience as a contractor. He usually arrived on time and if he couldn't he called to let me know. I would not hesitate to contact him in the future for quality workmanship. He is a craftsman and his work reflects this.

If you want to work with a contractor who is lightning quick and thorough, extremely knowledgable, and has a great sense of humor - Jay's your man! Jay responded immediately after I posted, showed up on-time to scope out our project area, and gave us a very reasonable quote all on the same day. He did a fantastic job being creative without sacrificing functionality since we asked him to mount a wall up NON-DESTRUCTIVELY and well, he did just that....all on a -Sunday- morning during the 49ers game. Jay is definitely the one I'll be contacting again for future projects!

We hired Scott to replace sun-damaged dry-rotted fascia boards on the front of our two-story house in Folsom before repainting it. His guys did a great job peeling back the concrete roof tile, removing the damaged boards and replacing with new boards. Perfect execution. Not a single tile was broken. He also recommended using engineered wood which was a great suggestion to avoid cupping. I'm an architect and I work for a major general contractor, but I just didn't want to do the work myself. I had high expectations and Scott's company met and exceeded them. I would not hesitate to recommend Scott and S & W Construction for your carpentry needs.

Working with Dennis and the entire Spectrum One team was an absolute pleasure. We had heard horror stories about kitchen remodels gone wrong, and were nervous about taking on this remodel. Dennis helped us through each step in the process. Every day, the team showed up on time and made progress. The whole project (knocking down a wall to open the kitchen to the dining room, installing new floors, counters, backslash, appliances, creating a new pantry, and re-doing a bathroom) took just over four weeks. Their price was in line with other contractors we talked to, but the quality, transparency, and efficiency were top notch. I would highly recommend Spectrum One, and wouldn't hesitate to work with them again in the future.

I contacted Jeff on Thumbtack after having several contractors not show up for a fairly simple job on a sprinkler head repair. Not only did he respond quickly but came out the very next day. He was prompt, courteous, efficiant and eventhough he travelled from Antelope to Elk Grove, the cost was within reason. We will DEFINITELY use his service again when we have more work for him! Thanks Jeff!!

I meet with Brian today. My need is to convert a tub/shower to a shower only for my son who will be returning from a deployment. My project changed after contacting Insight and I sent a message to say I had additional needs. Quick response which is always helpful. Brian did show and showed on time. He gave me many options to keep the project price under control. I can purchase all materials or he can purchase for me. I like the options. He gave me an overview and took time to answer my questions. I am waiting his estimate currently. So many Contractors do not show or its not worth their time yet they do not let the customer know that is the situation. I feel Brian will respond with an estimate as promised. I am really most impressed with Brian and hope I have found a contractor that I can use long term future projects :).

KGA Construction was AWESOME! First, Gennadiy was the only contractor who was available for a small job. The tree trimmer hit my t1-11 siding right on the seam so I only needed one panel replaced. My gas line had to be shut off and removed and Gennadiy worked around PG&E's schedule for the disconnect. Second, Gennadiy did an excellent job of replacing the siding. Third, Gennadiy was very polite and professional. I can't say enough good things about Gennadiy. I am so happy Gennadiy was the contractor who did my job.

I live far away from a large rental unit (from 1964) that needed renovation. Based on the reviews, I went with Nathan. We spent about $25k on the total project, and Nathan did everything from painting smokey walls, laying laminate/vinyl flooring, partial bathroom (2) reno, partial kitchen reno, garage conversion, window replacement, electrical and plumbing work, and various repairs. I'm very satisfied with Nathan and his hard work. The place looks fully renovated and he went above and beyond to ensure installations/repairs are seamless with the original features. Whenever any problems cropped up, he was very willing to work it out. He's professional, responsive, and trustworthy. That is a very important consideration as I was remote.

Nick (owner, Colony Construction) and Dakota are doing a medium scale bathroom remodel in our new house. We didn't have a contractor recommendation when we decided to have the bathroom remodeled, so we were careful to call Nick's references before we began. All the references gave glowing feedback about Colony Construction and Nick specifically. Nick is wonderful to work with: his work is conscientious, careful, and clean. He explains every step of the process, and keeps us updated on progress and upcoming steps. He has good ideas for meeting our needs when obstacles crop up (it's an old house). We're very happy with his and Dakota's work, and would highly recommend them.

My wife and I decided to remodel our kitchen. We were looking for a company/contractor who could do the job. We met with, David Smith. Owner of WDS remodeling. We had some kind of idea what we wanted and a few days later he came back with a layout of our kitchen. The crew, consisting of Elliott and Ryan. They did an outstanding work, and it was a real pleasure to have them in our home. We couldn't be any happier with the work you guys have done. Thank you, David and crew for our brand new kitchen. We love it. I would / will recommend you guys to everyone. Thanks again, James and vicki

Mark is absolutely amazing! I wish all contractors could be like him. He is professional, friendly, very courteous, and his work is beautiful. I hired him to make custom cabinets for the bathrooms and he walked me through each step to customize my design. When he was unable to find a matching color for the countertop, he contacted a company he works with so I could look through pieces of granite and find a match. He installed the cabinets this weekend and the workmanship is beautiful. Solid wood, matching stain, and soft closing drawers. The price is on point as well. I would venture to guess that something of this size would be about the same price at Ikea, or some other cheap furniture place that uses particle board and laminate. I will be using Mark for all my custom woodwork needs - and there will be plenty.

I had a such wonderful experience with this company the first time I continued to them back for more projects. Hakob is honest and works hard to get the projects completed in a timely manner. He response time is great and he never leaves you hanging like other contractors are known to do. His prices are affordable and I never felt like he was misleading with his quotes. I highly recommend APS Inc.

I was referred to Mr. Shaffer by a friend who had their bathroom remodeled. I was so pleased with their bathroom I had Mr. Shaffer ultimately do my bathroom. Mr Shaffer was not only very patient with me he really offered a lot of design ideas which proved to be very helpful. There was a lot of detail in the design of my bathroom and shower. My bathroom came out beautiful. And I couldn't be happier. Mr Shaffer went over and beyond his duties. I was really impressed with with Mr Shaffers courteous, knowledgeable service. He is quite a craftsman. As you might know contractors can leave quite a mess. And Mr Shaffer really cleaned up my bathroom well. I would highly recommend Mr Shaffer.

The quality of Doug’s work is very high. He is a perfectionist and it shows. Most importantly while my house was being remolded they keep things neat and clean. It’s rare to find contractors that clean up after themselves. I highly recommended Doug and his team. You will be happy you hired them!🤗

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
