Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does landscaping cost?

The price of landscaping varies widely due to the range of choices that can be made, but you can expect to pay anywhere from $320 and $20,000 for your landscaping work. The national average cost for a landscaping project is $2,600.

Factors like the choice of plants, the amount and type of hardscaping, the square footage of your landscaped area, and the region you live in will have a significant effect on your landscaping cost.

Is hiring a landscaper worth it?

A landscaper is worth it if you don't want to invest a significant amount of time and effort into planting, trimming, raking, weeding and performing other operations on your garden or yard. Hiring a landscaper to perform regular maintenance in your yards and complete bigger projects is valuable if you’re looking to sell your house. A professional landscaper can make your house more appealing to potential buyers.

Some landscapers may perform maintenance duties — remove leaves, mow lawns, trim trees and shrubs, etc. —  but they can also help you bring bigger projects to life. This may include adding a misting system, an outdoor fireplace, water features, artificial turf, a patio and much more.

Start contacting landscapers near you to get free estimates and start planning your project today.

How much does landscaping cost per square foot?

The cost of landscaping can vary widely based on the type of plants you wish to have, the amount of grading required, the condition of the land before work begins, and other factors. Adding in designer or high-end landscaping, as well as hardscaping such as sidewalks, walls, or patios will add to the cost. To find out how much your landscaping will cost, contact landscapers near you.

What is landscape design?

Landscaping design refers to the art of analyzing an existing landscape, planning how to transform it through flora and fauna design and working with a client to ensure goals are met. Landscape designers may completely transform an outdoor space or make minor modifications to enhance it. They may also call for grading and the construction of hardscaping surfaces like walkways or patios to add to the enjoyment of the space.

Where can you buy landscaping rocks?

You can shop for landscaping rocks from a variety of different sources. The first option is large chain retail stores specializing in home improvement and gardening. Often, landscaping rocks like slate and other slabs arrive on pallets and are sold in bulk, giving you a great deal. Your local landscaping store also carries rocks, and you may even have a stone or quarry seller nearby who can sell you the rocks you need. When in doubt, contact landscaping companies near you to see if they have rocks you can purchase.

What is landscaping?

Landscaping is the intentional placement and maintenance of living plants on an area of land or in your yard. This can include trees, lawn, flowers, bushes and other plant life and often incorporates mulch and other organic matter. The primary purpose of landscaping is to provide beauty to the house or building it surrounds.

Many landscaping companies also offer design, architecture and construction services. For example, they can help you design a yard that incorporates a patio, deck, pool, fire pit, lighting, walkways, retaining walls and more.

How much does landscaping improve home value?

Landscaping your property can boost the value of your home between 5% and 15%, according to Better Homes & Gardens. They specify that this is the amount of value added when you upgrade the condition of your landscaping from poor to good, though these terms are subjective.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

JR Landscaping is beyond exceptional! From the consultation to the first job, Jesus communicated effectively and was very efficient. We needed several trees and large bushes removed and eradicated from our yard along with a one time major cleanup. Jesus and his team showed up on time, completed the job within a few hours completely removing all trees and bushes along with an amazing cleanup of the yard. They did a fantastic job!! Consequently, we hired JR Landscaping to be our full time Landscapers for weekly maintenance of our yard. We are so happy we found JR Landscaping!! Very professional, punctual, and the work/value ratio is stellar. Thank you Jesus and team for your hard work and we look forward to having you with us for a long time!!

Strong work ethic, always on time and prepared! Went above and beyond In picking up rented equipment for us. Professional and very polite! We searched for quite some time for our yard landscaping (large job).. As a young business owner Josiah impressed us beyond words! We're now ready to hire them back again for our fencing job, and retaining wall! Last but not least in comparing bids and time to do our work. Majestic Landscape saved us thousands and had the job completed in a 1/4 of the time these larger companies were bidding! Truly a FABULOUS experience!

They came the same day I contacted them and gave me an estimate. The very next day they came and prepped my lawn for the landscaping job. We ordered the materials the next day and the whole job was done in less than a week. They are amazing and do great work. I look forward to hiring them for my backyard work.

Kul was great in responding to my initial questions and concerns in regards to our landscaping project. He and David showed up on time each day, made sure everything was clean prior to leaving, and completed the entire job as promised. The price was reasonable and he also followed through with a concern we had after the job was finished. We definitely recommend A+ Gardening.

Timothy responded right away and came out to give an estimate. He was very professional and he provided me with a detailed written estimate and was very professional. His prices were fairly reasonable. The weather didnt cooperate very well. When he was able to work, it took about 3 full days to transform a once Overgrown yard into a lovely landscape. See for yourself.

I was about to give up on workmanship and professionalism in this area and then I met Jim and the Blue Lion team. I interviewed several companies to put in artificial lawn next to my pool. Not only was he reasonable and timely, his product was superior to all the samples I saw. In addition, he suggested a beautiful paver border and it really enhanced the look of the yard overall. His team was on time and professional. The lawn area looks beautiful as you can see from the photo and I couldn't be happier. I'm actually going to use this company again as I complete the other side of the yard and I don't need any more bids. I'm sticking with Blue Lion Landscapes!

Rodriguez Gardening folks are hard working and get things done quickly and they charge about $60 an hour which isn't too bad. Unfortunately, once paid they didn't come out and fix things. Several communications sent via text and nothing after they were paid. Brothers even said they would come back and fix stuff , but didnt. They left a power saw and didn't even come for that to avoid fixing their own mistakes. Sadly they made numerous mistakes that shouldn't have existed with folks who have been doing this for 15+ years: 1. Missed 10 plants putting drip systems on and had plants die as a result of lack of water. 2. Holes for plants were not dug big enough for the new established plants. Several plants became rotten due to the water not being able to drain. (CLAY SOIL) 3. Told to condition the soil since we have clay soil and didn't do that to every plant. 4. Need to break up the root systems before planting and several plants did not have this done. Two Rosemarry plants were dead and pulled up exactly in the shape of the pots they came in. 5. Didn't water a single new plant that was planted. Common Sense here folks. 6. Asked to set up the water meter twice and to test the water and this never occurred. They didn't test a single drip system they added to existing lines. 7. Didn't change water pressure on the drip system main regulator so we had some ends literally pop off. 8. Figured they would run a main line all around the entire yard under the bark. Instead they ran small tubing from the main up to each plant and these are all visible now and it looks completely horrid. Lousy job in planning and how to do this better. Just a desire to get her done quickly and not professionally. 9. Put in border boards around the yard and some of them have come undone or the boards have warped. 10. Seedling plants were buried by bark even though they were told about them. 11. Plants that were doing well and re-transplanted by them have died or doing very poorly. 12. Asked to put on 2-3 drips per tree and several trees didn't even get water drips or just one drip and not sufficient for trees. (Lost 2 trees as a result of no drip system). 13. Drainage system. Well the drainage system installed I thought would be cool. Only problem was the drains were installed anywhere from 0.5 to 2.5 inches above the ground. In addition the end of the drain system they ran the pipe up out of the ground and didn't even bother capping it. Seriously this is just silly. 12. Concrete work - We had some concrete poured and it didn't look too bad. We were gone when they came back to remove the boards. If we were here I would have told them the work was awful, but since they didn't communicate at all after receiving money there was no point. The concrete on the top wasn't too bad but all along the SIDES complete CRAP! You look at the neighbors concrete you will see a nice 3.5 inch thickness all along just fine. Ours complete crap. All along the sides all over the entire area that was done ranges from 1 to 3.5 inches in thickenss but at the corners just complete TRASH! 13. The concrete work caused drip system to be damaged multiple times. they fixed the one that was visible but after leaving we kept having tons of water coming from somewhere. Later after hiring another landscaper they dug under the concrete and found where the main line had been damaged. We had to pay for a lot of water usage due to waste because of this. In summary, I do believe they know how to do the work I just think they wanted things done quickly and it didn't help changing the scope of the project along the way to add things for what we wanted. Nothing was written down and that is something that should have been done. A mistake on my part. The original estimate was $1400 then later told they didnt add in the board work so it went up to $1900 for labor. We did add more plants than was negotiated and additional boards and drainage system. So we had to pay more of course for the extra work that was done. Which we did. Total was $4600 for labor and materials. I would have been happy with it if we didn't have to hire another landscaper and fix all their issues and have to replace so many plants and we have additional trees to replace. So we lost about $350 as a a result and the concrete work on the top didn't appear to be too bad just the sides (thickenss) was done extremely poorly. I am a fairly reasonable person but when they stopped communicating that was all I needed to know they just didn't care after that. So I personally will not recommend them to anyone.
