Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get the outside of your house painted?

You can expect to pay around $2,535 to get the outside of your house painted, though this cost will increase with larger house sizes (and decrease with smaller ones). The average hourly rate for exterior painters is $45 and ranges from $25-$75.

Wood, brick, stucco, vinyl, aluminum and stone each have their own set of demands. Contact exterior painters near you to get a detailed cost estimate for your house.

How many coats of paint does the exterior of a house need?

Your house’s exterior will likely need two coats of paint. With two coats, your house will look more even and solid in color and will be better protected from moisture and the elements. The painting should always occur over a primed and well-prepared surface.

What colors should I paint my house exterior?

You have many options when it comes to paint colors. For example, an off-white creates a traditional look, and it looks great with a bright door to contrast it. Yellow is a happy color that, while light blue is reminiscent of an oceanfront style. Gray houses are also on trend, providing a classy and neutral tone that remains warm and inviting.

How often should you paint your house's exterior?

Expert opinion is mixed, but the general range is five to 10 years. However, this depends on many factors. Houses in harsh climates with extreme temperatures, lots of dust or ice or intense sunlight may need more frequent paint jobs than those in temperate climates. Also, wood houses will need new paint more often due to the changes within the wood itself. You should also consider painting the outside of your house if you plan to sell it.

What is the best exterior house paint?

Acrylic paints are generally considered good options for today’s home exterior paint jobs. You can also choose an oil-based or latex (water-based) paint. Also, look into specialty paints for your doors, roof, gutters, siding and other exterior surfaces.

What should I look for when choosing a painter?

When choosing a painter, pay attention to online reviews and ratings. Reviews with pictures are especially valuable, as these showcase the painter’s work. It’s also important to check whether your state requires licenses for painters — if it’s required, your contractor should be able to present their license.

Finally, compare estimates and quotes from multiple painters near you. Take into consideration what each one guarantees with the job, including factors like higher-quality paint, extensive preparation and a good warranty.

Should I pressure wash my house before painting?

Pressure washing your siding before painting is an efficient way to clean your house in preparation for receiving new paint. However, it must be done correctly to avoid causing water damage or damaging the siding itself.

Depending on the PSI rating of your washer, you should stand far away enough from your house to avoid removing paint or etching into the siding itself. Also avoid injecting water behind the siding, which typically occurs when spraying upwards at a low angle.

When in doubt, consider hiring a pressure washer near you before your painter paints your home’s exterior. Or, contact the best painters near you to see if they offer pressure washing services as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a painter during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to use virtual tools for communication. If you’re hiring local interior and exterior painters, contact them to see if they’ll set up a video call to assess your project. During this call, they can get a feel for what needs to be done and may be able to give you a price quote.

Discuss potential plans and strategies for getting the work done safely. And ask whether they accept virtual or digital payments.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a painter when social distancing?

If you hire a painter, maintain at least 6 feet of distance at all times, sanitize involved surfaces and spaces, and use digital payment services instead of cash or a check. When contacting and consulting with a painter, make sure you discuss a plan that will keep everyone safe while the painter works on your project.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Phenomenal job and I would highly recommend. Luis went above and beyond painting 2 rooms and my entire home's exterior. He had great communication as we navigated the rain and he did this while I was 3,000 miles away. We'll be buying a new house soon and we will most definitely be using his services again!

Over a period of several months in 2020, Chance Denton painted the interior of both units and the exterior of a duplex in Sacramento. I found him on Thumbtack and was initially going to hire him just for the exterior paint job. The guy who was supposed to paint the first unit bailed on me at the last minute, and I had tenants coming in soon and I really wanted to paint the place prior to their move-in. Chance was willing to juggle his schedule at the last minute and helped me out. He had his crew come in and in a matter of two days painted the entire interior. I appreciated his help. Due to other projects, I ended up pushing the paint job out and he ended up painting the second unit before the exterior project and did a good job again. The exterior was of course more complicated and I had him tour the asset in advance to ensure he knew what the was getting involved with. We went over different color schemes in advance. In the end, I was happy that the duplex was protected from the elements, and I was quite pleased with the improvement. The last thing he did was stained a wooden fence for me. All in all, I was pleased with his work. On a few occasions, there were small items that needed some follow-up. Chance was happy to follow up, which I appreciated. Because I hired him for 3 jobs, he was willing to throw in a little bit of value-add here and there. Price wise, he's not the cheapest but he isn't the most expensive. The price he charges is fair. I knew that going in and I was comfortable with it. For the interior of the 2 units, I only had a few days to work with, so it was important that I had someone who could execute and not drag their feet. James was able to deliver the results needed. Because Chance has a lot of clients and projects, I would suggest having a little bit of margin of error with your timetable so if there are delays with his other projects, then you're still covered. That was not an issue with me but he stays busy so just something to keep in mind. Again, I am happy with the work Chance did and would consider hiring him again. I think he can do a good job for you also.

I sent a request on a Friday about 3 o’clock in the afternoon through Tumbtack, Rodney replied within the hour and we were set up for a consult for the next day. We were looking for someone to paint the exterior of our house, (eaves, patio cover and backside of our house). Rodney was professional, quick to respond and was reasonably priced. Thank you for doing a great job!

Luis and his crew went above and beyond our expectations when painting the exterior of our home. At first we were a little hesitant because he quoted us a price that seemed too good to be true. In the past, we have experienced "you get what you pay for" but not with Luis. He is very meticulous with the job. He is also very responsive and made sure he communicated with us on everything that was going on. He truly cares for his customers needs and it shows as we have received so many compliments on how our house looks. He is not satisfied until his crew has completed the job to the customers liking. While Luis' crew was painting our house, our neighbor also loved their clean job and hired DJ's Painting to do his house as well. My neighbor is not very computer savvy and asked if I could give Luis a five star review on behalf of him. I will definitely hire DJ's Painting for my future painting needs. I highly recommend using these guys over other company's that are going to charge you thousands more. Thanks to Luis and his crew on an awesome job!

Hired Chance Denton with Aspire Painting back in May 2021. His crew painted exterior metal railings on two stairwells and landings at a small apartment building in North Oak Park. Had a welder add pickets to bring it up to code and the paint on old sections was pretty well worn down in many places and there was a lot of rust throughout. Chance had his workers prep everything and apply two coats of DTM (direct-To-Metal) paint. The finished job looks great. There are no brush marks or imperfections and a year later it still looks as good as new. I was concerned about the rust coming through but so far it still looks pretty solid and I expect it to stay that way. As far as cleanliness, there are no drips or stray splatter on any of the concrete steps or the concrete below. Nice to know it was not treated as "just an apartment building" but rather treated with the same respect that would be given to someone's house. That is a tell. Everyone else we have ever hired have only concentrated on doing a good job with what needs to be done but how the property looks afterwards seems to be of no concern. Chance and crew left everything around the railings exactly as they were before painting.

Hugo and his team at BPC exceeded my very high expectations. I am a perfectionist and see every flaw in paint jobs. From the initial consultation, I could tell how much Hugo cares about the quality of his work. His color suggestions were spot-on, and his responsiveness is unparalleled. The team was early every day of my multi-day exterior paint job, and they were a joy to have onsite. BPC transformed my house and fence, leaving the job site clean and undisturbed. They respond well to suggestions and modifications, and always want to make sure the customer is pleased. Recently, they completely transformed my unfinished garage into a masterpiece just by staining/painting many exposed boards and ceiling black. Best company I have ever worked with on home improvements. Great value for the quality of work. I cannot recommend them more highly.

Terrific job!! Austin of First Call literally was the first call I made of five painters on Thumbtack because he responded first to my request for a bid. He did a fantastic job! Painted my entire exterior to create a picture perfect home! Not one detail left behind. He works seven days a week - showed up before 7 am, even on Saturday and Sunday! Could not be a better experience. Polite, kind, professional, meticulous attention to detail, hard working. What more could you want? Thank you Austin!

We had a poor experience. We have an older home which was in need of a lot of prep work for exterior paint. He struggled with getting a consistent group out to get started on the the job to begin with, he did not communicate at all on what the situation was and had a lot of excuses as to why they would not show up on certain days. Several different people showed up at my door saying they were coming to take a bid on his job (he made it sound like he had a team ready to go). I renegotiating with him figuring the issue had to do with the low bid, and he happily accepted more money. They did a great job on one side of the house and spent an entire day prepping and sanding it, the rest of the house they painted over and did minimal prep work within a day. It was embarrassing, my neighbors laughed at me and had a lot of negative comments about his teams effort in prepping my house (they sat in the shade and drank more than they worked on the house). They really took advantage of me not being around during the day. Raymond appeared minimally to check on their effort, and was always asking for payment prior to the job being done. Once they finished I voiced my concerns about the quality of work of the front of the house. He agreed to redo the work on the front. His idea of redoing the front was the rub spackle on the peeling paint and bubbles and repaint it again. Due to the lack of prep, in just a few days it was bubbling really bad, I had it with this guy I hired a professional painter to sand it all down and redo it. Liberties lack of knowledge about painting was very apparent after hiring a professional painter, the house it now properly caulked between all the wood siding and properly sanded it looks great no thanks to these guys. We started this process march 20th and he 'finished' on June 10th just to give a timeline of how long it took to this low quality of work.
