When my fiancee and I were in search of a pre-marital counselor, we didn't know what to expect. We just knew it was best practice to do pre-marital counseling, so we did. The minute we met with Kim for an intro session, she was a kind, comforting presence that was able to get both me and my partner to easily share - something rare for my partner. Throughout our time working with Kim, she helped us hone in on issues within our relationship while discovering things about ourselves - individually - that we didn't realize were negatively affecting us. What we loved most about Kim was that she didn't just talk us through every problem we were working to solve but provided us with tools that we will be able to use for years to come. In our sessions, Kim provided great counseling with a sincere intention to set our marriage off on a strong foundation of self-awareness and clear communication to build our relationship upon. When I started working with Shannon I was struggling with deep unhappiness and uncertainty about my life, as well as my relationships with the people in my life. I was skeptical of talking to anyone because of several prior bad experiences with counselors and psychiatrists. But I called anyway out of desperation and I'm very glad in retrospect that I did. Shannon helped me consciously identify things that are important to me and things I wanted to change. With Shannon I learned to proactively become aware of and eliminate negative, harmful, or just plain not useful patterns of thinking and instead treat myself using positive reinforcement. These changes seems small and simple but their impact is deep. I also benefited from her wise perspective on managing relationships with others. By using what I've worked on with Shannon, I feel more clear, capable, reflective, and self-aware. This in turn has helped me focus, enjoy my work, and improve how I view my relationships with my family and coworkers. I'm all around much happier and proud of myself. Mike is an amazing counselor and pastor. He officiated our wedding 24 years ago, walked through premarital counseling with us and helped us through many rough spots in all these years. We often say we wouldn't have made it without him. Mike knows how to discover issues early on and helps to deal with the reality of living as a married couple. Illana officiated our wedding, and there is no way that our experience could have been better! The opportunity to have Illana marry us and coach us through vows beforehand was a big part of our choice to get married when we did. Illana had been working with us as a coach and counselor for a couple months before we asked her to officiate our marriage. We wanted something special and very intimate -- really, we wanted a ceremony that was deeply about us committing to one another and our lives together, rather than pomp and circumstance...or frankly a lot of people and planning. Illana was so positive and deeply excited for us, which was great because it wasn't impersonal -- by that time, she already knew our challenges and gifts as a couple, and so she was the perfect person to ask (and only one we would have asked). When the time came, we asked to be married on New Years Day -- the week BEFORE. (Yes, I'm serious). Although she planned to be out of town, Illana offered that we join her up on the coast where she was staying, where she recommended the most INCREDIBLE location. She also happened to know a fantastic female photographer who also said 'yes' to our last-minute when-inspiration-strikes wedding...! We trusted Illana to create the ceremony as she envisioned it, and anyone who knows her would trust her with the same (although my sense is she is also would have been very open to collaboration). The biggest gift was how Illana coached us in our own vows -- she had us see them in a spiritual sense, as a practice we are committing to rather than a promise that can be broken or kept. This has lent so much richness not just to the ceremony but to our lives in the weeks since. I'm HAPPY to share Illana with the world, and I've already recommended her -- and her way of looking at marriage -- to several friends. Truly a GIFT!

What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

What are the types of psychologists?

How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
