We had Dave come over to fix a number of things in our old house. He arrived on time and was very friendly. He did a very nice job of replacing the threshold to our front door, and repairing our old garage door which was falling apart and sagging. He installed a new dishwasher, replaced the angle stop which was leaking, and installed a security light. His charges are very reasonable. On top of that he realigned our front door which was sticking and fixed our driveway gate without charging but we tipped him for that! We would definitely call him again for future work at the house.

Milko did extensive painting with prep work, including some very high walls. He also built a beautiful trash enclosure near the front of our property, plus large storage shelves in our garage. All of the workmanship was top-notch. He was always responsive and punctual, and kept us well-informed on progress and next steps. I'm sure we'll have reason to hire him again in the future.

We had Mohamed hang some swag lights, secure cabinets to the wall, hang a full length mirror and a small glass shelving unit, and change a lightbulb that was too high and one that broke and got stuck. He was wonderful. He came early and took his shoes off at the door. He was super clean when he worked. Vacuumed up any dry wall as he was drilling and even used a wet swiffer after to clean the floor where there was debris. Everything looks great! He went above and beyond on the lighting, helping to take the design in my head and make it a reality.

I recently hired Jasper for a kitchen cabinet job that involved installing new hardware and hinges on all of my kitchen cabinet doors (as well as some touch-up work on the doors, themselves) and then installing/hanging them. He also installed a new surface for the under-sink cabinet. I would definitely hire Jasper again. Top notch, quality work, reasonable rates and he's a super nice guy on top of that. Definitely recommend.

Moe arrived promptly as scheduled to quote the job. His price was reasonable and he had the needed equipment with him. The job took 45 minutes and we have a new quiet garage door. He offered add-ons but was not pushy about getting us to purchase them. I would highly recommend him for your garage door needs.

James, from Precision Garage Door Repair and Sales was great! He is super passionate about the mechanics of garage doors. This translated into a high degree of confidence in him by the customer. He fairly assessed other parts of the garage door that were worn, presenting options for my consideration. A great customer service attitude.

Juan was punctual and installed 2 single car garage doors in just 1 day. Despite all the complexity of dealing with the electrical wiring of a building that’s over 100 years old, he was able to fit the doors and get them working.

Richard came to service our broken garage door the next day. He was courteous and professional and had all the parts to fix the problem in under an hour and a half. He was also super helpful in walking me through installing an app to operate the door remotely from our phones.

Very happy with the work KJ did on our garage door. He was schedule the work next day and arrived on time. He explained what needs to be done and how much it would cost (no different than what he quoted earlier). He finished the job on time. The garage door works perfectly now. Also very quiet since he lubricated the rollers too. Overall I would not hesitate to call KJ again. I recommend him.

Spent years with an old wooden door and constant repairs. I've had this door repaired multiple times over the past few years and nobody ever suggested replacing the door. All the previous Garage door people would just sell me on the quick fix and move on. Chad came out and educated me on the mechanics of the door. He was happy to just do the minimal repairs, but he talked me through the potential future repairs vs buying a new door. What I liked most is that he provided me with all the relevant information to make an educated decision. I chose to go with a new door and I'm extremely happy with the results. I had multiple companies come out and give me a bid and the guys with Vulcan were far superior then their competitors. They don't sell you on things, its all about education and making sure I made a decision that best suits me. Their craftsmanship, attention to detail, competitive pricing and professionalism is what sets them apart from the rest. Thanks guys and awesome work!

I called John Monday morning around 8:30 to replace my garage door opener. The work was finished by noon that day. How about that for speedy service. John is a really nice guy and completed the work to a high standard. He also provided a one piece track runner at no additional charge which he said worked better than the 5 piece Chamberlain one I had purchased. To top it off he hauled away my old unit and all the boxes the new one had come in. Now that's service!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

    Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How much does it cost to get a garage door fixed?

The national average for garage door repair cost is between $80 and $110. Some of the factors that affect your garage door repair cost are the type of springs (most often torsion or extension), the size and weight of the door, and the door material. Many garage door pros will charge a service fee to visit your house and determine the problem. Often, the service fee includes a set amount of labor. One example of this is an $80 service fee that includes the first hour of work plus testing and inspecting your garage door and garage door opener, while another pro may charge $150 for the same standard service call.

Broken or jammed springs are a common problem. In one example, the starting price for spring repair was $99, while another pro’s cost started at $185. The $185 starting price included $40 for transportation costs, $60 for parts, and $85 per hour of labor. Professionals may charge extra for late-night garage door repair emergencies.

How much is it to replace a garage door panel?

Replacing a garage door panel can add significantly to the cost of a garage door repair. Panels run horizontally on sectional roll-up garage doors. They may be made of wood, vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass or steel. Garage door panels can become damaged from hail and other extreme weather, dents and dings, car accidents, and age. When deciding if you want to replace a garage door panel, it’s helpful to compare the potential repair cost to the cost of a new garage door. Panel replacement requires a pro with the proper tools as well as the new parts. With parts and labor you could be paying more than $500 for one new panel. In comparison, a new garage door may cost $800-$1,200 (on average) with installation. If there is a possibility your garage door was structurally compromised when the panel was damaged, have the pro assess whether it’s better to completely remove and replace the door, rails and framework to ensure your home’s safety. It may also be better to completely replace your door if it is severely rusted or dented; if the paint is peeling and fading; if the door model is outdated or you can’t find replacement panels; or if the panels or rails are structurally compromised.

How much should it cost to replace a garage door cable?

If your garage door is not opening or has become jammed, you may need to replace the garage door cables. Unless you have the proper tools and know-how, this is a job best left to a professional due to the weight of the garage door and the extreme tension of the springs. The cost of repair will vary depending on your location, the length of the cables you need, and the time it takes the pro to do the replacement.

From a big-box store, basic garage door cables can run between $8 and $20, depending on the product. Your pro may charge you a different cost if they provide the cables. Your cables may not need to be replaced if they have simply come off the track, but broken cables will need to be completely removed and replaced. In either instance, the pros will need to secure or take down the door; unwind the springs; reset or replace the rollers, cables, and drums; and then wind the springs once more. For example, a pro could reset cables that have come off the track for $129.99. The average national cost for a garage door repair specialist is $80 - $110 per hour and the typical cost to replace a broken garage door cable is anywhere from $130 to $200.
