Kevin is one of the best plumbers/handyman in Silicon Valley. He is a true professional who is honest and is willing to help you out whether you choose to avail his service or not. He did an excellent job fixing the clog in my bathroom sink and he also helped me out with other handyman chores. Not only was the job well done in addition to giving me tips on how to fix things so that I can fix such issues in future but he also charged me for less time than he actually spent. Overall, I'm very happy with Kevin's work and will definitely recommend him to my friends & colleagues as well as rely on him for future needs.

Max is AWESOME! We'd been having problems with our water heater for MONTHS, and four other plumbers had tried to fix it and failed (although of course they all still had to be paid ...) Max responded immediately to my request for quote; he came out to the house the next day, was 100% competent and businesslike, got the parts ordered, followed up on scheduling for the install, and two business days later THE PROBLEM IS FIXED -- at last! Highly recommend him. THANK YOU MAX!!!!!

I hired Gusanito to install porcelain tiles in my bathroom. He was very prompt--being the first contractor to contact me on thumbtack--and quickly responded to my text messages whenever I had a question. He takes his time and is very detailed in his work. He is also willing to help you with other problems. For example, in addition to installing the tiles, I also wanted to change my sink faucet and shower handles. He agreed to do the extra work at a reasonable price. The tile installation went smoothly, however, we ran into plumbing issues which he couldn't solve. I'm giving him four stars because I hired him on thumbtack for tile installation services, not plumbing. Nonetheless, he agreed to bring his cousin (who is an experienced plumber) over the next day to change my sink faucet at no extra cost. The total work took about two full days to complete, but I'm sure it would have been less if we didn't run into the plumbing issues. So I recommend him but make sure you talk with him thoroughly about what you want to accomplish.

Mohamed was extremely professional and easy to work with. The scope of work initially identified was less than what it ended up being. The work started at roughly 5 pm and I was expecting it to be done by 7 pm at the latest. But as these small things add up, Mohamed ended up being at the home up until 10:30 pm. Not once did he complain about getting this late despite having very small kids waiting at home. Regarding the work done, he helped install a new kitchen sink faucet and caulked a few areas where there was a potential for water leak, repaired the flush in one of the bathrooms, and the toilet seats in two bathrooms, the shower head and tap for the bathrooms were replaced. He also helped replace the lamps in the foyer which was extremely difficult to reach (22 ft. height). I most definitely recommend Mohamed's professional services for any handyman work.

I appreciate his diligence and integrity! He installed new laundry room cabinets and worked on a minor cabinet door alignment issue until I was satisfied. Installed a new toilet, bathroom vanity light and a 16 lb. dining room flush-mount light. When I had a issue with the new toilet he corrected it immediately. He's now my go-to handyman and I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a handyman!

First things first, Stan who was the plumber who came out was amazing! He was 100% professional, friendly, clean, honest, and kept us in the loop the whole time. Buying an old house has a lot of downfall. The obvious being that plumbing was old and deteriorating. Stan had our pipes in both bathroom & kitchen in good condition by the time he was finished. This job was very, very difficult. He got it done and gave us advice on what to do to keep our pipes clean in the future. I will definitely use Mr. Rooter again if needed but will also refer them to friends but I will ask for Stan going forward. Thanks Stan!!

GEM construction arrived a couple of days prior to working on my bathroom to give me a free estimate. They were very professional and easy to communicate with. They replaced the faucet and vanity in our bathroom. Everything was done in a day and they cleaned up after themselves. They are very honest even showed me a receipt for parts they had to purchase to finish working on our bathroom (I didn’t ask them for it). I recommend GEM construction for your plumbing needs.

Sometimes you get lucky. We did when Stephen responded to our weekend post for a plumber on thumbtack. We had lost a pvc pipe connected to our roof's drain. The weather forecast was for rain the following day. As other reviews note, Stephen was on time and quickly addressed our needs. He had the situation fixed in under two hours with highly competent workmanship. It did rain the next day and the roof drain was working just. fine. Thanks Stephen!

TL;DR: Valentino was excellent, and I'd hire him again in a heartbeat. I had some hesitations about hiring a plumber, after all the stories I've heard about plumbers charging exorbitant prices. For my disconnected kitchen sink pipe, a couple plumbers quoted me very high prices. When I came to Valentino, he charged me a fair price that was much less than the other two quotes. And moreover, he came on time and got the job (which actually wasn't so simple) done well. Super nice, super professional, and super honest. Hands down, I'd hire him again, and would recommend him to my friends.

I have a relatively complex radiant heating system with a circulating hot water system as well. The work I needed done was some straightforward plumbing but all plumbers I'd reached out to turned me down due to the radiant system. Clay and Mark replied straight away and came as soon a they could. Not only were they unfazed by the system, they fixed my problem, showed me how I could have done it and then stuck around to make sure all the components were working correctly. They were professional, helpful and did excellent work. I will definitely use them again.

I was apprehensive about calling a plumber when I noticed a leak. I called a few companies from google search and they were either busy or quoted crazy prices. D's plumbing responded to my post on thumbtack, showed up quickly and then worked really hard for 4 hours in the heat to diagnose the problem. He had to cut through walls, climb over washing machines, etc. Throughout the time he was patient, respectful and in general awesome. If I could leave a 6 star review I would. The price he quoted after the work, actually felt like much more than a bargain and I added a 30 percent tip. Thanks so much for your help. I'd highly recommend.

I had a plumbing problem that had been plaguing me for over a months. I had four plumbers come and take a look at the problem and only one - Selvin - figured out what the problem actually was (and it turned out to be much simpler than what all of the other plumbers were suggesting). I would strongly recommend Selvin for any of your plumbing problems.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
