Tom installed 2 ceiling mounted garage storage units for us. He was very friendly and professional. Also squeezed our project in on a short notice. The job was done to our satisfaction, also even though he worked for almost 4 hours (due to challenge in finding studs in our ceiling) but only charged us for 3 hours, mentioning that he did not expect to take over 3 hrs for this job. The job was challenging as our studs are spaced 32" apart instead of 16 or 24"s, on top of that the two units I purchased were of different brands. In spite of the challenges he completed the job perfectly. I will definitely be calling him again for any future projects.

We wanted to mount a TV in our kitchen and we wanted to hide the cords. Steven had to get to it by cutting in through our laundry room. He had to move a very heavy washing machine, get in through the wall, install a new electrical outlet and patch it all up. It looks great and his pricing was reasonable. He also installed a ceiling light which required cutting into the ceiling and patching it all up. Looks great.

Carlos and his team did a few projects for my restaurant. I had them repaired the ceiling, fixed some cracks on the wall, demolished the one half wall, and installed new tile floor. Carlos arranged 3 of his best guys to work on my project. Those 3 guys are good! I like working with them. They worked fast and the quality of work is good.

We scheduled (and re-scheduled!) a time to install my bike rack. (The re-scheduling was due to both our work commitments, and it was HILARIOUS.) Emmy and team were great sports through the scheduling difficulties and, when they arrived to realize the rack was too short for my loft ceilings, promptly addressed the issue with a quick trip to the hardware store. They provided me two options from which to choose, and integrated my choice safely into the installation. Hyde Handcraft is quick, inexpensive, professional yet fun and we had a great time arranging one corner of my evolving habitat.

Sean installed two new bathroom ceiling vent fans for me, and removed the old existing fans that were not working any more. Sean is a superb craftsman and takes pride in his work! He has the utmost concern for his customers' satisfaction, and I can say he went above and beyond my expectations. He arrived promptly, communicated extremely well with me before, during and after the work was completed. He is honest and does not push you for any unnecessary work. Sean is a total professional and extremely knowledgeable in all aspects of electrical, drywall, and carpentry repairs. I am extremely happy with the job Sean did and I highly recommend him for any work you need done!!!!

Extremely professional - everything to the initial visit to bid to work and cleanup. The work was done well, and in very little time - no delays. The clean up was so incredible, there was absolutely no evidence of work being done. Matched the existing paint perfectly, and refinished the ceiling in the original Santa Fe finish. I would definitely use them again, and would recommend them to others.

Jose from JP Custom Home is a total pro. Courteous, punctual, and a great value. I scraped a popcorn ceiling in one of our bedrooms; Jose patched, taped, sanded, textured, painted, ran electric for and installed a ceiling fan/light. Amazing work. Will definitely use this great little company again!

James did several jobs -- installed new auto-close door hinges on a fire door so it would close by itself per code; aligned a fence gate so it would open and close easily without rubbing against the post; did an extremely perfect, professional drywall repair and painted the ceiling beneath the bathroom light fixture; and repaired a broken roof truss up in the attic. James arrived right on time, first thing in the morning, and was done with everything well before noon, which included having to make a "HomDepo" run and a break. Amazing. Professional. Congenial. ...I'm working on my next list!

The owner of Rios Custom Carpentry, Erik, was very courteous & knowledgeable in what my husband & I wanted done, which was repainting our backyard shed's roof, repainting one of our bathrooms' vanity & medicine cabinet, & repainting the master bedroom's bathroom ceiling this past month (March of 2018). Since he did an excellent job on those projects, we re-hired him to repaint all of the doors & door frames inside our house!

I am a recent homeowner in Escondido, Ca and I looked on thumbtack for a contractor and that's when I first found Luke Carr Construction which was an excellent choice. My old house built in the 1920s needed to be completely remodelled, there were holes and cracks in the lath and plaster which other constractors were leary of working with lath and plaster. Luke fixed all the walls, rewired all the electrical in my house, including new ceiling fans and can lights as well as new deco switches and outlets throughout that I purchased from Home Depot. He also painted the entire 4 bedroom house each room with a different colour I selected. He refinished the original hardwood floor in the house as well as the old chipped and base floor moulding, which came out superb! He opened walls and doorways to expose more of the kitchen and bedrooms, he created matching arch ways to match the ceiling. At first I was nervous because I've never done this before but in the end it looked even better than I could visualize and it created a more open atmosphere, I've received lots of compliments from family and friends about the unique arch ways. He also gave me advice on landscaping and didn't charge me to replant some of my trees that were put in too deep (took two hours), and gave me advice on the exterior which is the next phase of my home. He is an excellent painter, clean and neat, matches existing texture perfectly the other contractor said he would try but couldn't guantee it would match. He also did additional electrical work in the bathroom and advised me to add extra outlets in the living room that I didn't think I needed but really have helped me bring the house up to code. Overall Luke is a trustworthy guy and is very respectful of my choices, he gets the work done, he doesn't have a lot of the modern technology like 3D imaging and I don't believe he has a website but his dedication and old school ways worked beautifully for me and my job. He prides himself on his family life, I met his grandchildren on two different occasions and they were sweet. I'm looking forward to having him back for Phase 2! I've recommend him to two of my friends, one of which used him and she was very satisfied. Patricia

Gordon replaced our roof, installed sky lights, he replaced a section of our interior woodbeam ceiling and perfectly matched the stain and the biggest project - our kitchen. Gordon charges a fair price, is on time and does not leave a mess. I will not hesitate to call Gordon for my next home improvement project!

After a phone chat, I sent Mr. Duin an e-mail outlining the projects I had in mind. I asked him to help me select those that fit into my quarterly budgets. Together we selected three that needed attention this winter. 1. stabilize a wobbly 6 foot block (gate) wall that was inches from a gas main, 2. Build a short block wall that would hold back dirt from a muddy embankment, 3. Reinforce a swaying wood fence and wrap metal posts with cedar – box style. Mr. Duin and staff did an outstanding job of listening to my needs. I was impressed with their work, quality of materials, work ethics and attention to detail. They were very pleasant to work with and I look forward to our next round of projects. I hope to include the trim/molding (with up lighting) along the ceiling of my front porch which will have to wait until early Spring – due to budget considerations.

Martin and his crew did great work for us. They were professional and friendly. We originally had them give us a bid just to remove popcorn ceiling and repair some drywall, but we ended up hiring them to do lots more work - everything from installing can lighting with new electrical lines to installing new vinyl windows.

I hired AP Contracting to do a major renovation on a rental unit. My tenant had lived in this unit for approximately 20 years and the unit was in need of some major work. I called AP Contracting and scheduled an estimate. Anthony showed up on time and we walked the entire unit. I had ideas of what needed to be done and Anthony made some serious suggestions which I also agreed to. I told him that I also had a budget that I needed to stay within. The next day Anthony provided me with a written estimate and a price which was about $3300 less than I had budgeted and this included his additional suggestions, I was impressed. I was more impressed when his crew arrived the next day and the work began. I did a complete renovation, cabinets, carpets, took down the aged popcorn ceiling, painted, replaced the tub and shower, tiled the floors in the bathrooms, painted the entire unit and put in new carpeting. Anthony suggested replacement of the sliding glass doors and a few windows and the replacement of the garage door, which had a broken spring. This entire job took them 13 days start to finish. Now I am not one to do social media reviews but I was asked to review AP Contracting as a former customer. I do not think I am a former customer as I am in the process of having Anthony work on the 4th of my rentals as I write, I have always been one to worry about shady contractors, but I am glad I found AP Contracting and would recommend them to anybody. I needed some dry wall repaired, wires moved, and new lights installed. Manny want above and beyond to make sure the whole ceiling tied in together. His price was very far. The only thing to note if at all is he was a little bit of on his time estimate. Well worth every minute however.

Gerardo (Jerry) did a fantastic job. He completed his work in 2 days just as promised. Framing the newly installed windows with beautiful casings, painting the bathroom, laundry and ceilings expertly after he tuned up the less than perfect drywall work someone else had done. Gerard repaired the silicone seal around my kitchen sink and added a kick plate to my older laundry sink cabinet. He is very knowledgeable and creative in his carpentry design. I will definitely use him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
