Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

She was great!! Very reasonably priced and my dog loved her. We hired her for one session to help with potty training my Rottweiler and my dog was fully trained with almost no issues within two days of her training session!

Working with Mel has been fantastic. She is a terrific trainer. She's patient and teaches training techniques in an accessible way that's easy for an inexperienced dog owner to understand and implement. Working with her has given me a lot of confidence with my dog. I would recommend her to anyone who's looking for one on one positive dog training.

Beth was amazing. She trained us on how to train our new dog that we rescued. Mavis had leash anxiety and would bark at dogs a lot. I walked her through the Little Italy farmers market and she didn’t bark at one dog. She still does it a little bit now and then but now we know how to train her to stop. Thank you Beth!

The training began the second Beth walked in my door and my dogs started acting up. We have two rescue dogs, one is a smooth collie and the other is a cairn terrier mix. The collie has a herding issue with my grandsons and the terrier has nervous aggression. After her first visit, the terrier was already responding to her methods. One week later the dogs have made a noticeable improvement. It was amazing. Beth is a straightforward, no nonsense caring trainer for both of my dogs. Her methods are positive and rewarding. We are working on week three and Beth has given me the tools to be a more positive, assertive dog owner and life is getting better! Both of my dogs have made tremendous progress with Beth's training method. I HIGHLY recommend her for your dog training needs.

Beth is professional, timely, and tailored to your specific dog training needs. She was able to provide us with feedback and training that placed our stubborn 14 week puppy on the right track. I highly recommend her for first time dog owners or anyone with a challenging pup.

My dog has struggled with leash aggression for years. Living in apartments and condos made the issue even more intolerable due to the close confines of elevators and hallways. I've spent hundreds of dollars and untold hours in training over the years to no avail. Beth recommended the use of a Halti and after one session with Beth, my dog was ignoring other dogs. After the second session, she didn't even react when other dogs barked at her and pursued her. Beth gave me logical and easy to follow directions to continue with our training on our own. It will take consistency and persistence on my part to see the training through but I have hope for the first time in a long time that my dog can live harmoniously with others.

I had an exceptional situation bringing 2 older dogs from a home with a doggie door to an apartment with no direct access to outdoors where there were numerous encounters with other people & many other pets. My dogs barked constantly at the new environment. With only minimal sessions my “top dog trainer” had the furkids leash trained, pottying outside & tolerant of other people & pets. Beth is a miracle worker in my book!!

Look no further for a dog trainer, Mel is the best. She is passionate, patient, and excellent with animals. In the short time that we have used her we have seen results and a more disciplined dog. She cares so much about your animal that she is always available for consultation over the phone. She has boarded and trained our dog when my family went on vacation and sent follow up videos and photos of our puppy on our vacation. We look forward to a long term relationship with Mel and our adorable and well trained puppy.

I reached out to Beth in desperate need of a dog trainer, as my sweet but strong and leash reactive dog has unfortunately failed many other trainers. After my first session with Beth, my dog’s behaviors while on the leash were manageable and I felt in control of him for the first time in a few years. After 3 sessions, I truly cannot believe that this good boy is really my same dog. Beth is confident in her techniques and was very patient with me while I learned from her. Thank you, Beth, for helping bring back the joy of owning a dog. I can take him anywhere now and both my dog and I are calm and confident when around other dogs. I can’t stop bragging about Beth’s work to my friends. I definitely would recommend her to anyone looking for a trainer!

Our dog was experiencing anxiety issues and some behavioral issues. Beth is magnificent. She is always on time and wants to meet us in public places. Although she met us first at our house, the other meetings were at Balboa Park, Fiesta Island dog park, etc. No other trainer wanted to meet us at a dog park or where they may be other dogs to see/play with(which is where he was experiencing issues). And each session (1hr or so) she went over many issues/training details which was wonderful. We really got the most out of the hour and had plenty to work on at home. And everything she has told us has worked so far! We have only had two sessions with Beth but plan to have at least two more to continue our dogs training.

I recently reached out to Beth because my two dogs were out of control. They pulled me around on their leashes, lunged at other dogs and people who were in our path, barked in the house, terrorized my guests, and generally behaved like hooligans. Beth came over for the initial assessment and immediately picked up on things about both dogs that I never would have known. We worked together for four sessions and I feel like I have two different dogs now. They no longer pull on leash and understand the commands "heal" and "leave it". When people come to the house we have a system now that calms the dogs down and allows them to have positive interactions with my guests. I love Beth's positive approach to training them. She left me with the skills to continue training them myself and the dogs have responded really well to all of her lessons. I would highly recommend Beth to anyone looking for a competent dog trainer.

We have a rescue young dog that had some serious issues w/other dogs. Beth helped me understand him and how to face his issues from his point of view. After the first visit, we could tell the difference in his behavior. She truly understands dogs. She very professional and wants to help right away with whatever needs we may have. Her method of training is all positive re-enforcement with the dog, which is exactly what I wanted. No strong arm training. I highly recommend her and am extremely satisfied with her method.

Beth seriously changed our dog! When we got him, he was cute...but a menace! Now, he's the dog we've always dreamed of. Beth trained us to train the dog so we could practice when she wasn't around. She was great about follow up emails to make sure we were training correctly. In 3 sessions she got our puppy, who's not even 14 weeks old yet, to: sit, stay, lay, shake, heel, stop the nipping, stop the random barking, and just behave much better. Overall very pleasant experience. PS-Scooby loved her too!

My 2 Golden Retrievers who were showing signs of aggression toward other dogs on our walks, and my anxiety was high when other dogs approached us. I called Beth to help. She recommended to change the leash I was using, walk them one at a time for better control of them, and taught me/ them other commands such as "leave it" and "heel". Her teaching style is great. She is knowledgeable and caring. My dogs walk well now and my anxiety has lessened. I still need to do more training with my dogs, but Beth gave me the skills to do this. I would use her again if needed; excellent dog trainer. Vicki Sriebel

Beth was nothing short of amazing. Super knowledgeable and in two sessions has made a huge difference with our new puppy getting along with our existing dogs. I will continue to use her services for brush up lessons and training. For myself and the dogs!!! Thx Beth!

My family got our first dog without any preparation and the first two weeks proved that we needed a lot of help. Beth was able to solve all of our problems specifically geared to our dog and was able to answer all the questions we had. It was obvious from the first lesson that she was very knowledgeable; her 'teaching the trainer' mentality not only helped Cooper settle into the house based on our standards faster, but also taught my family and I important skills towards making sure he is a properly trained dog. Our household is much less hectic and much happier with Beth's help!

I feel so blessed to have found Erica! Erica is the second dog trainer I tried out, and she is the best by far! Erica is a highlight to my dogs’ day and a highlight to mine as well! We absolutely adore Erica and I cannot recommend her enough. She is so easy to communicate and schedule with, her love for dogs is palpable, and she is extremely reliable! I found Erica on Thumbtack, and she was so quick to respond to my inquiry. I scheduled her for an eight week puppy training program for my then 4 1/2 month old miniature Australian Labradoodle. I wanted my puppy to learn basic commands and good behavior, as well as foster a respectful relationship with my 11-year-old maltipoo. After discussing the different DogLove training packages, I decided to go with having 3 training sessions per week (2 of them 1:1 with just Erica and my pup while I was at work and 1 coaching session with all 3 of us) and 2 daycares per week. We have learned so much! It gave me such peace of mind to know that Erica was checking in on my dogs while I was at work and also to know that my dogs were having fun when they were at Erica‘s for daycare! Speaking of Daycare- One of my favorite parts about training with Erica is that she is always sending me pictures and updates! She makes sure to schedule her days so that she doesn’t have too many dogs over, and she does an excellent job at giving everyone attention and love! We are getting to the end of our eight week training course, and I know both my puppies and I will be sad to see it end! Thank you Erica!!!!

Our dog, Zeus, has just started with Mike. So far, it's been awesome. Mike has identified the areas where Zeus needs training. Not only is Zeus learning, but we're learning things as well. I would recommend K9 Positive Training to anyone who has any challenges that they need fixed. As a matter of fact, Zeus does not want to leave the training facility! Like a kid at Disneyland!!

After working with 3 other trainers, I can confidently say that Mike has been the best one, by far. Our dog Casper used to bark and lunge at strangers and other dogs. We were constantly running away and avoiding situations that would trigger him. With just 10 days with Uncle Mike, he now nicely meets other dogs and asks for pets from strangers. We always knew our dog Casper was very sweet, but we're so happy that now others can see that side of him as well. Mike is a dog whisperer, and we cannot recommend him enough. (See photo of our dog Casper hanging out with his new friends!)
