Amazing job on our tile and our carpets. They were able to clean the tile beautifully, even the grout. I didn’t realize how much our carpet and tile needed cleaning until they came. Couldn’t be happier with them and we will definitely continue to use them in the future.

Jake was very professional and he was actually early for his appointment!! I had tenants living in my house and after four years the tile, grout and laminate floors were filthy. Jake worked very hard to restore my grout lines. Jake worked for 8 hours straight on my 1200 sq ft place. The results were phenomenal!! I could not be happier!! Suncal was very affordable as well!! I will use sun cal again and recommend them to anyone!! Thanks again jake!

Highly recommend this company. They came into my home did an excellent job with my carpets. Not planned but I asked if they would look at cleaning the grout in my kitchen. The grout was nasty but he made it shine again, sealed it, and I was extremely happy with the results. I've set up a recurring appointment and will definitely continue to use their services.

I recently called my church asking for a referral for a person who would be honest, affordable and be able to do almost anything I needed done around our home. They referred me to Praetorian Construction and Sean Benson. It turned out to be a great recommendation. I've used Sean several times now and he has been able to accomplish everything I've asked him to do. He has repaired kitchen drawer hardware, installed window blinds, installed exhaust fan motors, installed garage shop lights, installed a microwave oven, repaired tile grout on kitchen counters, built garage storage cabinets, installed and fixed electrical outlets, landscaped and installed a beautiful synthetic lawn in our front yard and this is just a small sample of what Sean is capable of doing. Sean works hard, fast, is fairly priced and is a really good guy. I consider myself very fortunate to have found Sean and have referred him to several of my friends already.

Robert did a bathroom remodel for me. The service and craftsmanship was excellent. Timely and efficient. The bathroom came out looking great, it's been 2 years and no problem with leaks. When I first got my bathroom done, the guys before Robert (diff company) didn't grout the tile correctly, so the water ended up leaking behind the tub and ruining the drywall. Robert and his guys came in and were very thorough, they tore out the bad drywall and redid the tub and tile. I had them do the floor tile as well as the sink. I also hired them to reroute the sprinklers in the front yard, which had been broken since I moved into the house. They redid the entire front yard in a weekend! Very fast. I plan on using them again when I'm ready to do my kitchen.

Greg was going to replace the treads and risers on my front stairs (wood). Instead he created a masterpiece. Despite running into several problems with rotten stringers and termite damage, Greg still remained close to the estimated time they would take to repair. I cannot say I was not forewarned about unseen issues. The impressive thing is Greg does not just tell you about them, he shows them to you, and gives you the pros and cons of fixing the problems or leaving them alone. He and I went to the lumber store where he showed me various types of wood we could use and explained the differences between them. That way I could make an informed decision, choose according to my budget, and see exactly where my money was being spent and the amount I was spending. I had always wanted natural, unpainted wood stairs, and that is what I got. A lovely golden cedar oil base stain and sealer with non-skid additive and I have the nicest stairs in the park. Greg also leveled them (they were not level when I hired him), removed the ugly metal runners from the treads and sides, and ensured that everything was within code. I cannot stress enough how friendly, knowledgable and professional he is. His rates are more than reasonable, he is a pleasure to work with, and I would encourage you to give him a call for your next project. Greg is also replacing some flex pipe for me to bring my copper pipes up to code. A man of many talents, I am more than happy to recommend him to friends, neighbors, family and Thumbtack users.

About Floor tiled/grouted our kitchen floor in Mar-11. One hundred and fifty [150] square feet of 24 x 12 inch tile laid in a brickwork design. Due to the house being very old [built 1908] the floor was not a 100% true level so the job was not as straight forward as would appear on first glance. About Floors were very professional and cost efficient. My wife and I are very happy with the work completed and the time it took to complete. The work site was very clean and at the end of the day you would not realize it was a work site as everything was clean and tidied. We would be very willing to use About Floors for future flooring needs and would recommend to others.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I get my grout clean?

Dirt, mildew and grime can make your grout lines look downright tragic. If you have the ability, DIY tile and grout cleaning is definitely doable. Your main obstacles are time, project size, availability of the right materials and effort. Your first step in tile and grout cleaning is making sure the surface area is cleaned of basic dirt and buildup and wiped down. Be sure not to use a bleach-based cleaning agent, which could react dangerously with the vinegar used in later steps.

Depending on the delicacy of your tile and grout, it may be wise to start with water and friction before proceeding to a cleaning solution. In the shower you can spray the area while brushing gently, or use a spray bottle filled with warm water on countertops or floors. If water won’t do the trick, try a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar, and repeat the gentle brushing motion. This combination should begin to lift dirt and grime from the grout. For additional tile and grout cleaning power, baking soda applied directly to grout lines and sprayed with your water vinegar solution can help suds off sticky grime. If your DIY cleaning solutions aren’t doing the trick, store-bought sprays and pastes may have more cleansing power. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and enjoy your sparkling clean grout.

Tile and grout cleaning supplies include:

  • Old standard or electric toothbrush
  • Stiff bristle brush
  • Spray bottle
  • White vinegar
  • Commercial grout cleaner

How much does it cost to clean tile and grout?

The national average cost for tile and grout cleaning ranges from $190 to $250. Pros may charge a flat fee or by the square foot. Rates can vary depending on the type of tile and grout you have (more delicate tiles may mean specialized products or careful handwashing), how dirty your tile and grout are, and what part of the country you are in (regional labor rates and costs to do business affect costs). For example, one floor cleaning company charges 75 cents per square foot for tile and grout cleaning for projects that permit cleaning by machine. Another company may charge $30-$50 per hour for hand-cleaning of tiles. Companies often charge a minimum fee for services to ensure their business expenses are met when they accept a job, no matter how small. In addition, a tile and flooring cleaning professional may charge added fees, such as $25 or more, to move heavy furniture or appliances.

How do professionals clean tile and grout?

If you need tile and grout cleaning and don’t have the time or mobility for scrubbing your entire house on your hands and knees, it’s time to turn to the pros. Tile and grout cleaning professionals have industrial-grade machines designed for the sole task of cleaning the porous materials of grout and tile. Typically, a cleaning pro will come out to assess the job and provide you with a quote. Often they charge per square foot (for example, 75 cents per square foot), with higher prices or an hourly rate for areas that will need hand cleaning. The national average cost for tile and grout cleaning ranges from $190 to $250. Once onsite, the pros thoroughly clean the area by wiping or sweeping down and then vacuuming up any dry dirt. Next a chemical tile cleaner is sprayed over the surface, causing dirt to loosen and adhere to the spray; the industry term for this is “suspension.” The pros then clean the floor with professional-strength machines, which often use a combination of steam, brushes and vacuum to loosen, agitate and lift entrenched dirt. Your floor is then rinsed, removing all the spray. Usually a small room can be cleaned in under an hour. Applying a sealant afterward is recommend and will also affect cost.
