Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

I hired Dave to move a piano locally from one house to another (less than a mile). He arrived early and ready to work, he was very professional and experienced. He was able to move my piano in about 20 minutes. He was able to do the entire project quickly and with no damage to the piano or the houses. I would happily use Dave again in a heartbeat. Thank you, Dave!

Mr. Armstrong and his helper arrived early, they were courteous and professional and did a GREAT job. They handled my piano carefully, wrapping it securely before moving it through the living room and kitchen, and out the door to the driveway. They were careful with the ramps, and with the piano bench. Can't say enough good things about this company. I would definitely recommend them to my friends.

Alpha Movers delivered my piano all in one piece and still in tune. They were extremely responsive and answered queries immediately. They were also the only company that agreed to deliver within a specified timeframe which I really appreciated. Definitely recommend!

I highly recommend Hector and his team. I contacted several companies when trying to find someone to move my piano. Hector was the most polite, responsive, and professional of them all. He was also the cheapest by $170! We have very uniquely constrained stairs on both places and Hector and team managed them very well. They brought everything they needed for the job and were very quick compared to what I thought it would take. I wouldn’t hesitate calling Hector again when we move somewhere else. Thanks Hector! My kids love their “new” piano!

I need to schedule a piano moving urgently since the seller planned to leave in two days. I submitted a quote inquiry late night on thumbtack and got the quote earlier next morning. The price was pretty decent and the whole process went on very smoothly. I'm extremely satisfied with the service and would absolutely recommend Birditt moving to all my friends.

I never thought that moving a 150 year old pump organ over 300miles from San Diego to Sacramento would be easy but Pat made it simple! Wonderful on time service! Really cared about keeping the items safe and moved them all from home to truck to final destination effortlessly!! Fair prices and great service! I would happily have Pat move any piano or other large, precious family heirloom any time to any where! Awesome job!!!

Hired them to move a baby grand piano. This whole thing was kind of a nightmare. The first time, they called me the day before and rescheduled to that afternoon because their previous client didn't have keys to their new place, so they couldn't unload the truck. They promised me a discount for the trouble. I said fine. I rescheduled the cleaners I was supposed to have the next day because they only clean houses empty of all furniture. +1 extra day of rent. The second time, they didn't even call until the END of the 2-hour window they gave, saying they couldn't even do it that day because it took too long to unload the previous client. So I had to reschedule the cleaners again. Also +1 extra day of rent. At the end of the day, they didn't tell me that they would charge for the driving time from their location to my place (had no idea where they were coming from!). I've never had a local move (including a 30 mile drive) take more than 2 hours. But theirs was a 3-hour minimum. They ended up taking 3.75. And then they took a measly ~$20 off for the trouble. That doesn't even cover the 2 extra days of rent or the additional time my husband had to take off work. Wow.
