I had been struggling with insomnia for quite awhile and have been taking Ambien. I decided to try Hypnotherapy to see if I could stop the cycle of taking meds in order to sleep. I met with Sher and found her to be very professional, a great listener and very helpful and empathetic to my issue. After just 2 sessions, I saw a marked improvement in my sleep patterns. After each session, I would receive a recording. Sher was very good at listening to my feedback and suggestions and modifying the next recording to better suit my requests. I still faithfully listen to a recording on a daily basis. Each of my recordings is targeted for a separate subconscious message to aid in my sleeping. I can pick and choose which recording will help me each day. I would highly recommend Sher as she is a talented Hypnotherapist and a special person.

I'd feel selfish if my husband kept this gem of a find to ourselves. Cynthia is simply AMAZING! Here's our story: My husband and I both suffer from anxiety/panic attacks, which in some cases results in depression. The one set of my anxiety was when I truly started to grieve the loss of my mom in 2007. My husband couldn't finger point where his started . We've both been on numerous anti- anxiety/ depressants . I've had the occurrence of suicidal thoughts etc, on these medications. My husbands Dr. Recently put him on Wellbutrin. It made him mean and angry, I could see the anger in his face. A side of effect of this medication : FITS OF RAGE!!! We were recently married in July and took our honeymoon in Sept. With our family to our time share in Cabo. We planned for 7 days in paradise, making memories with the people we love. Well this was cut short to my husbands severe panic attack on day 3. He could not get out of bed, he said his body was hurting all over, he was vomiting, and crying because of the pain. As his wife I felt so helpless because there was nothing I could do. My bestfriend was in so much pain and all I could do was hold it together for him. We got on a plane that day(Saturday) and came home. We found Cynthia on The Thumbtack app!!! We made an appt the following Thursday for hypnotherapy. The very first time my husband met with Cynthia he said he felt so much better, he felt relief. After some discussion with my husband, I decided to meet with Cynthia as well. As I stated above she is AMAZING! Her office is cute, comfy and so relaxing. If you suffer from anything , from something as simple as feeling not great about yourself to severe panic attacks like my husband. GO SEE HER!!! Grateful husband and wife!!!

I really appreciated the phone calls I had with Amy before jumping into the hypnotherapy session. She is very thorough and is so easy to talk to. I went into this unsure if hypnotherapy will work for me and by the end of the phone calls I knew I was ready. That's the best thing with Amy, she didn't pressure me to commit to anything. The session I had with Amy was amazing. It showed me all the emotions I was carrying all these years. I left Amy feeling like I was floating on a cloud. The 3 follow up phone calls I had were very helpful too. She takes the time to listen still and encourage me to be on the right track. Overall I would definitely recommend Amy.

I have tried many, many things to help the anxiety I've lived with for years. It wasn't until I was introduced to hypnotherapy with Edwin that I, for the first time, felt relief from it all. Very professional and experienced! I would recommend his hypnotherapy sessions to everyone!

I provide unique hypnotherapy services to San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles. Not every hypnotherapist is the same. Yes training is important, but what I found is that the most important is the development of the hypnotherapist you choose. Have they really interpreted what they have learned, and are they an embodiment of their work? This is what I look for in a practitioner. Not all hypnotherapists are the same. I use an eclectic approach to my practice. Clients will leave with internal gifts they never knew they had! Which hypnotherapist are you going to choose?

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How does hypnosis work?

Hypnosis is a wellness technique that works by promoting positive behavioral or cognitive changes. During successful hypnosis, the client should be eased into a state of deep relaxation in which the conscious mind takes a back seat and the subconscious mind becomes more active. The client is often able to let go of critical thoughts and become receptive to the therapist’s suggestions. In this state of hypnosis, motivating suggestions can bypass your usual mental resistance and internal defense mechanisms. For example, even if you want to quit overeating cupcakes, you may have some level of resistance that your rational mind can’t overcome. During hypnosis, the positive suggestions made by the hypnotherapist can bypass your usual blocks, helping you to achieve the formerly unachievable: stopping overeating, quitting smoking, mastering public speaking, or losing your fear of heights. The goal of hypnosis is to strengthen and empower the client’s motivation, commitment and focus. Consider working with someone who is not just trained in hypnosis but also is a licensed therapist or psychotherapist who can bring their academic background into your session.

What can hypnosis help you with?

According to many sources including the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) which is part of the United States National Library of Medicine and a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), hypnosis is scientifically proven to help relieve both mental challenges and physical pains. Hypnosis can alleviate stress and reduce pain after surgeries, has been shown to relieve anxiety in children in the emergency room, and can be useful for managing pain associated with everything from arthritis to migraines. Hypnosis is non-invasive and gives you a way to control pain or discomfort that might otherwise seem out of your hands. Hypnosis shouldn’t be used as a substitute for medical care, but may be an excellent complementary tool that is best provided by a trained therapist or licensed medical provider. The University of Maryland Medical Center shares many conditions for which hypnosis can be useful:

    • Irritable bowel syndrome
    • Tension headaches
    • Alopecia areata
    • Asthma
    • Phobias
    • Insomnia
    • Addictions
    • Bedwetting
    • Fibromyalgia
    • Labor and delivery
    • Skin disorders, such as acne, psoriasis and eczema (atopic dermatitis)
    • Stress
    • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
    • Cancer-related pain
    • Weight loss
    • Eating disorders
    • Warts
    • Indigestion (dyspepsia)
    • Post-traumatic stress disorder
    • Smoking cessation

How is hypnosis used in therapy?

Hypnosis is a powerful tool to help clients overcome challenging issues such as anxiety, phobias, pain management, hot flashes and more. Hypnosis is also a way to help let go of addictions like smoking, overeating and gambling. In and of itself, hypnosis is not a therapy, but it can be used in conjunction with therapy to empower and encourage the person receiving it to make positive change. Some people are more susceptible to hypnosis and will benefit more from hypnotherapy than others.

According to Dr. Clifford N. Lazarus, speaking for Psychology Today, hypnosis is a “genuine psychological phenomenon that has valid uses in clinical practice … hypnosis is a state of highly focused attention or concentration, often associated with relaxation, and heightened suggestibility. While under hypnosis (i.e., in a hypnotic trance), it seems many people are much more open to helpful suggestions than they usually are.” The suggestions made in a therapeutic setting get deep into a person’s brain, beyond their conscious thinking, leading to behavior change and the ability to overcome challenges that might otherwise seem insurmountable.

What is the effectiveness of hypnosis?

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recognizes the healing power of hypnosis and its proven effectiveness for anxiety, pain control, smoking cessation, headaches and more. Hypnosis may be safe and complementary way to augment medical attention you are receiving for a chronic illness or pain, or a way to resolve an addiction or phobia that you are otherwise unable to control. Hypnosis does not work on every person. When scientists began studying hypnosis in earnest, a report published by Stanford University titled “The Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale” demonstrated that different brains respond to hypnosis in varying degrees, and a very few do not respond at all. Working with a trained psychologist, you’ll soon determine whether you are a good candidate for the healing benefits of hypnotherapy.

During a hypnotherapy session, the therapist will bring you into a state of deep relaxation in which the critical, conscious part of your brain recedes and the subconscious mind becomes alert and focused. The therapist will make suggestions, based on your intended goals, that will take root in your subconscious mind. These suggestions should affect your thinking in a positive way and empower you to make change.
