Performed a thorough fitness assessment during the first meeting. Very clear with goals. Uses individual notebooks for each client where he writes down all the workouts. You can use the workouts in the notebook on your own time which is really nice. There are alternatives to every exercise if there are any physical issues (for me it was my knees). The workouts are challenging but not over whelming. I thought 30min was too short but it is just enough time to learn basics and even get through the workouts; then do them later on my own time. Focus on posture and technique. Help me accountable in between workouts. He is also very sweet and friendly. I would recommend Burke.

This was my first experience of using a trainer, I had concerns of working out due to a back injury of over two years. I had two slipped disks one of which was a protrusion. I had physical therapy for a year with little improvement. I had 3 out of 10 pain constantly.. The first few sessions we started off slow, did lots of stretching and form work. A few sessions in we started light weight work with concentration on form. Again with the stretching (I am now a firm believer in that!) Now I'm six months in, I'm pain free most days and with stretching each day. Veronica worked with me through flare ups, knots and daily form advice. I stared to use a Chiropractor and have decompression therapy, Veronica adjusted my workouts to best fit in with that.. She had great advice and expertise in helping with injury. Including knowledge of muscle groups which caused a lot of what was affecting my back flare ups and pain. The workouts each time are well rounded and defiantly get you feeling it the next day. I would recommend using her, I have been going twice a week for six months and will continue doing so, seeing improvements as I go...

I can’t thank Len enough everyday for how he has helped improve my physical health. I was 3 years post car accident injury when I found Len and within 6 months I was waking up with no pain! I am able to workout almost daily and am progressing each and every day. When I have a flare up Len is there to help me get through with his hands on manipulations and rehab therapies. I honestly don’t know where I would be without him. Thank you so much Len !

I can't say enough good things about Malia! She is a bright young woman with knowledge far beyond her years. Her background in Iyengar yoga and her studies in physical therapy, coupled with her creative, enthusiastic nature, makes for a unique and enjoyable experience that will push you to your limit. Since I have been working with Malia I have become stronger and more flexible. Her emphasis on pelvic floor and core work has nearly eliminated my low back pain. I highly recommend Malia for all levels of yoga, and can't wait for my next private with her!

I started experiencing intense, unilateral exertion headaches out of the blue. Every time I would laugh, cough, work out, etc., I would feel pain. I was extremely concerned because I had never had headaches of any kind in the past. I visited a neurologist and was told that it could be something minor or something as serious as a brain tumor, but that he wouldn't know unless I got an MRI/MRA. Almost $2,000 later, I was told that the imaging results were normal, and the doctor still didn't know what was causing the headaches. I got blood work done to rule out some other potential causes. Again, all results came back normal, yet the headaches persisted. I've known Bo for years, and at the time I was experiencing this problem he was the Assistant coach of the team I run. He heard me complaining about the headaches to our team's AT on a bus trip to an away game. He suggested I try a session with him. I had nothing to lose and everything to gain, so I agreed. I will say that I am a big skeptic of any kind of alternative therapy, and I honestly didn't think it could possibly do anything to help something this serious. I was so wrong. I kid you not when I say that the VERY NEXT DAY my headaches (by this time now present for about 3 months) were completely gone!!! Bo is very good at what he does. I would recommend anyone experiencing any type of issue to be open to trying this before spending a bunch of money on doctors and medicine. You just might be surprised. It works!

I've used PRN as my P/T saviors for 15+ years . . . every therapist has resolved my issue with the perfect strategy for me. I've had 2 knee surgeries, a shoulder surgery, 2 hand injuries, and hip issues - I'm 55 and started soccer at 35 and then triathlon at 49 . . . I have not been held back by any of my injuries and I know it's because my recovery was so perfectly suited to me. Reece and his entire staff are efficient and precise in their treatment plans and my recovery each time as been superior!

My favorite thing about NAKOA are the coaches. By far. They are absolutely wonderful. I have taken classes with every single one of them and each has their own style and flair but all are funny, encouraging and tough as nails. Besides that, there are so many other things that I am grateful for as well from my time at NAKOA. The friends that I have made. The attitude there is infectious, both in the coaches and clients. They are all truly wonderful people to be around. Over time, I have accomplished fitness goals that I never thought possible.

I met Dr Helwig back in 2013 after having a sports hernia repair/ adductor release surgery. As an avid running I was recommended to her because of her sports and athletic background. Meghan took time to evaluate me and came up with a PT program design specifically for me. She got me back out running quicker than I could have imagined! Over the past few years she has treated me for running related injuries and a bad car accident. She is by far the best PT I have gone to. I could not speak more highly of Dr Helwig and her amazing abilities as a physical therapist.

About

our results are beyond usual predictors of outcome. Here's an example; a recent email from a client: Matrix Energetics – email from “A Very Grateful Grandmother!” Posted on April 7, 2011 by missionhillspt.com/blog Ralph, Thank you so much for the healing you did on my grandson. I have never mentioned this to my daughter because she is so sensitive about her son, but for a time I feared he might be autistic, but I no longer feel that way now. As an infant he would become frustrated and would bang his head on the floor, on the door, on the wall or hit himself in the head with his fists. It troubled me to no end to witness this. And when he began daycare at 2 years of age and started catching the colds and fevers that a lot of kids go though when they come in close proximity with one another his fevers would spike and he’d go into seizures. So when a friend suggested I bring him to you I welcomed the opportunity. I realize you have only seen him once, but since you worked on him he has become a TOTALLY different child. He is SO HAPPY…..constantly singing and laughing. That evening when he went home from your office and his mother asked me what you had done it was very hard to explain to her so I asked her to just notice and explain to me the differences that she noticed in him. Well that evening he picked up a piece of broccoli and began eating it as if were cotton candy. Since then he eats spinach, green beans, celery, cabbage, constantly asks for milk. You’ve done wonders for him. The following day when I picked him up from school he took me around and told me the names of all three of his teachers and before we left his classroom he turned and blew them all a KISS! This is totally different behavior for him, because before he was very quiet in school and didn’t want to speak according to his teachers. NOW in the mornings when I leave for work he blows me a kiss and says “I love you and have a good day”. I can’t believe the changes. Don’t get me wrong he is by no means an angel. We still have a few more issues I’d love for you to work with him on, but I WANT TO THANK YOU SINCERELY for the beautiful start you have given our baby boy. There has been no more hitting himself in the head with his fists or banging his head on the floor. He is now a gentle, loving, happy, well-mannered…..well at least a typical 2 year old now. Thanks again Ralph! A Very Grateful Grandmother!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are the different types of physical therapy?

Physical therapists work with people who have been injured or people who are ill to improve their movement and help them manage their pain. The U.S. Department of Labor explains that physical therapists “are often an important part of rehabilitation, treatment, and prevention of patients with chronic conditions, illnesses, or injuries.” Physical therapists can also choose to specialize in one of nine areas. According to the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties, these areas of specialization are:

  • Cardiovascular and Pulmonary
  • Clinical Electrophysiology
  • Geriatrics
  • Neurology
  • Oncology
  • Orthopaedics
  • Pediatrics
  • Sports and
  • Women's Health

The national average cost for a physical therapist is $60 to $80, although it will cost more if the patient is paying for services out of pocket rather than through insurance. If you have insurance and want to work with a physical therapist for a specialty area, such as oncology or geriatrics, you may need a referral from your general practitioner. Patients who are paying directly for services can often contact the physical therapist directly.

What exactly does a physical therapist do?

A physical therapist is a health care provider who assists patients with mobility improvement and pain management. Often patients are referred to a physical therapist by a primary care doctor or specialist for help recovering from a surgery or traumatic injury, such as a car crash. Physical therapists help patients manage pain that results from chronic disease and other illness. Physical therapy can help enhance mobility when patients are faced with neurological disorders, such as after a stroke, and provide relief from arthritis or other mobility and pain issues.

A physical therapist uses medical exercise equipment and exercises to empower patients to regain flexibility and mobility where possible. They may use treadmills, steps, medicine balls, resistance bands, isometric exercises, weights and more to improve muscle control and movement. A physical therapist uses physical movement to help heal the patient, but also can sometimes prescribe medication as appropriate. A physical therapist can also become board certified in one of nine specialty areas.

Why is physical therapy important?

Physical therapy can help you recover range of motion and ease pain after injury, accident or illness. Many people are prescribed physical therapy by their primary care doctor or specialist after a car accident, surgery or sports-related injury. You don’t need a doctor’s referral to start physical therapy, but unless you are paying out of pocket for the services, your insurance provider might require a referral. Physical therapy is also a medical solution for pain associated with chronic illness such as osteoarthritis and can be used for recovery after a stroke or other neurological disorders.

Physical therapy teaches you how to move your body in a safe and healing way to regain strength and movement. During a physical therapy session, the PT will teach you to use medical exercise equipment and approved exercises to regain your lost flexibility and improve your mobility where possible. You may use treadmills, steps, medicine balls, resistance bands, isometric exercises, weights and more. From young children to seniors, patients of any age can benefit from the science-based movements and exercises that encourage flexibility, rebuild muscle, and ease stiff joints.

How much does a physical therapy session cost?

The national average cost for a physical therapy session is $60 to $80, although the cost may be higher if the patient pays out of pocket for the services instead of being covered by insurance. Physical therapy sessions may last from 30 to 120 minutes, depending on the therapist and your medical needs. When paying out of pocket, session rates may range from an average of $75-$300 or more, depending on the location, length of session, and specialization of the therapist. Standard out-of-pocket rates average $150 per session. According to the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties, physical therapists may become board certified in one of nine specialties: Cardiovascular and Pulmonary, Clinical Electrophysiology, Geriatrics, Neurology, Oncology, Orthopaedics, Pediatrics, Sports, and Women's Health. To receive this board specialist certification, the physical therapist must complete a minimum of 2,000 hours of clinical work in their specialty area and pass an exam. A physical therapist who is board certified in a specialty may charge higher rates to account for their advanced training and expertise.
