My son Max has been taking drum lessons from Blake for almost a year. He hit the ground running from day one, teaching the basics including reading music which I believe every musician should know. Blake's methods and personality have made drum lessons enjoyable and Max looks forwarded to his weekly sessions. I would absolutely recommend Blake to anyone interested in learning to play the drums.(show more)

I am a patient teacher, who loves to teach students of all ages and musical backgrounds. I take the time to carefully develop a curriculum, and a unique learning experience, for each student, in a relaxed environment. I teach fun, helpful and informative drum lessons at any skill level. I have 15 years teaching experience, and 25 years professional playing experience. I have studied drums and percussion for many years, under the tutelage of some amazing teachers. By age 6, it was recommended by my music teacher and great friend, Tom Makoviecki, that my parents take me for lessons with New York broadway/session drummer and educator Pat O' Donnell, where I developed the passion for the instrument, and developed the discipline to study it diligently. Rick Dior, Jack Winters and Tom Nichols followed through High School, and opened my mind and my playing to new worlds of music, and higher levels of musicianship. I studied percussion under Ray Des Roches at William Patterson College before becoming an instructor myself. With the help of fellow educator, Matt Patella, I began taking students in 2001. Here are some testimonials from my students: * "Mike Holowatch is the best teacher I have had so far in my musical adventures. He not only made me a better player, but he opened my mind musically to not only think as a drummer, but as a musician. I have learned a lot from him in all styles of music such as Latin, 2nd line, rock/pop, and r&b/funk. I took lessons with him for nearly 3 years. I barely scratched the surface. I highly recommend taking lessons with Mike. When you walk away from it you will have great technique and be a very well rounded player and musician." - Josh Toth * "I took drum lessons with Mike Holowatch for the better part of two years. His vast depth of knowledge and excellent ability to breakdown and explain concepts, enabled me to not only perform at a higher level, but expand my musical horizons to places I had never thought to venture. Since my time with him, I have continued to record and play shows with various artists, as well as perform with the Monmouth Symphony Orchestra. Everything I learned be it drum technique, sight reading, along with the spiritual side of drumming can be attributed to him. I continue to this day to work on the ideas and concepts he passed on to me. Mike Holowatch is an asset to the drum community, as he continues to educate and pass the knowledge of our wonderful instrument." - Mike Ruvolo * Mike is a great drum teacher; he can help you achieve your goals because he has the ability to instruct and to understand a student's strengths and weaknesses. He is an extremely talented musician who can actually teach all levels of drumming. Mike helped me with sight reading music and always gave me the confidence I needed to take my drumming to the next level. It doesn't matter if you are a beginner or pro, Mike will improve your drumming... That is a 100% guarantee! Much love an appreciation goes out to him for taking the time to teach me correctly which allowed me to continue to practice on my own after he moved away. I only took lessons for a year but I learned so much in that little bit of time and it was an enjoyable year of drum lessons with him; I only wish he'd move back so I could start lessons again. -Susan O'Leary Michael is a superb drum instructor, with the ability to gain rapport easily. I was thrilled to pick up my old instrument again and Michael has been successful, and teaching me the skills I forgot so long ago. To anyone interested in a dedicated and dynamic teacher, look no further. -Brianne Sheehan(show more)

What do you love about your job?
I love doing my job everyday. My students learn from me and I also end up learning from them. I get to meet some amazing students who have so much potential and passion. I want to teach them how to be more confident in playing drums or other musical instruments because I, too, have struggled with learning when I was just a beginner. I got stumped over and over again with new materials to learn and I tried my very best to master them. It wasn’t easy but it sure was worth it. Constant practice has to come with a lot of patience.
What or who inspired you to start your own business?
I was teaching drums in Tennessee to about eight to ten students. I had a thrill watching my students who had never played drums or held drum sticks before in their lives be able to sit down after a couple lessons and play a groove on the drums. I moved to Arizona for a couple of months. I met a friend who inspired me to keep teaching by going to my students’ homes and having my classes there. Another friend of mine told me to try signing up with Thumbtack, so I did. Soon, I moved to Los Angeles to follow my dreams and continue teaching as well as performing.
