My son needed a tutor for his freshman year college English Composition class. Before hiring Carl, I had tried a couple of tutors, but didn't find them to be competent. Carl was a very pleasant surprise; he is both very knowledgeable and engages well with my son. I like the fact that he does't merely correct him and gives him answers, but makes him think and analyse the material. He is a rare find.

I really learned a lot from Daniel. He clearly knows a lot about the topics he tutors in, and knows how to explain it in a way that's easy to understand. His demeanor was calm and is very easy to talk to!

I am so thankful we found Jeff!!! We had worked previously with a different SAT tutor who clearly didn't know what he was doing. Although Jeff was priced higher than some of the other tutors on Thumbtack, I wanted to see if spending a little more would make a difference. It did - we just got the scores back, and my son raised his score by 400 points! I cannot recommend working with Jeff enough. My son loved having him come to the house. We will miss Jeff, but I hope others can have the type of experience we did. You won't regret it!

I am a professor of mathematics and the supervisor of the Math Tutoring Lab at Los Angeles Valley College. Reza is one of the best tutors I have met on any campus I have taught at including University of Utah, Cal State Los Angeles, and numerous community colleges. Reza has tutored at LA Valley College for the past 9 years. Overall he has tutored for 18 years. He is commonly the tutor I hear praised most often by my students. They tell me that not only is his mathematics excellent but he is very clear in his explanation and very supportive with his attitude. He makes my students want to do more math because he makes it very comprehensible for them. Reza tutors Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Calculus and Statistics. He is the standard I hold up my other tutors to. He shows up on time, teaches very intuitively and my students walk away from each session with him feeling better about themselves. As a person, I find Reza to be a wonderful role model who volunteers many hours each week at the tutoring lab, teaching math to many students on campus.

Cindy and everyone at Rainbow tutoring are some of the kindest individuals I have met. The wisdom Cindy bestowed on me while helping me through my college application process will be with my forever and I am so grateful. Cindy helped me figure out what I wanted in my college experience and gave me the tools to get myself there. She introduced schools that I wouldn't have seen myself at and helped me get myself to Santa Clara University. She is beyond inspirational and such an empowering woman that is a role model to any and all of her clients. Cindy and her team are smart, dedicated, and reliable- they are always able to help and are great mentors to have before going off out of high school and into a college or real life environment. Cindy especially is very clear and really walks you through the steps to understanding in both Math, Writing, and the SAT Prep. I am so thankful to have met and able to work with you guys !

Mr. Frost is an excellent tutor. He patiently explained subjects in Calc that were beyond my understanding. I also had Mr. Frost tutor me in staticis and he clearly explained and throughly answered all my questions about the material. He is super approachable and makes the subject matter understandable. Mr. Frost took time to answer all of my questions and cared about my academic performance in the class. I highly recommend working with him! His rates are reasonable and he was flexible with scheduling.

Michael has been an invaluable English tutor for our son. He was able to artfully help our son with his college essay, guiding him through the writing process while making sure the essay was in our son's own words. Our son was accepted into his first choice college, partly based on this essay. Even after our son's freshman year of college, Michael continues to be available to tutor him. Michael has delved deeply into understanding our son's writing challenges, identifying specific steps to help him get on the right track. With his insight and gentle manor, Michael has connected well with our son, allowing him to be a very effective tutor. Michael is very responsive and flexible, providing sessions on Skype when our son needs them. Michael has proven to be a top-notch writing tutor for our son.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

  • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
  • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
  • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
  • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
