A highly trained musician is someone who has spent decades since childhood studying his or her craft. Mastering a musical instrument and succeeding as a pedagogue requires an incredible array of skills, from fine muscular execution to high level intellectual understanding of music theory and history. It is an endeavor that is truly athletic, academic, and creative. The study of a musical instrument and of music in general builds a plethora of skills, including analysis, discipline, critical listening, communication and teamwork (through ensemble playing), and of course creative expression. It is a fantastic learning avenue for people of all ages, and especially children. I am continually amazed by everything I have learned from my musical life! Music is an international language and serves as a fantastic way to connect with other cultures as well.
