About the Teacher
Tyson is a local music composer, experimental instrument builder, and multi-instrumentalist who has written for horns, winds, strings, vocals, percussion, and rhythm sections for jazz, classical, and world-music ensembles. Having composed and arranged in settings as small as solo instruments and rock groups to his own full-length symphony for 18 musicians, Tyson is adept at teaching to each student's particular needs. He has a degree in music composition, painting, and writing from Whitman College, with a focus on jazz, classical, and 20th century theory and techniques and taught there as well.
His recent projects include Soundcave, Elationists, Thelivingpulse, and Chrysalis-foundation. He has performed main stage at Harmony Festival, Anon Salon's Sea of Dreams, the deYoung Museum, MCCLA, SomArts, and many others.
Tyson regularly teaches composition, piano, guitar, ukelele, banjo, harmonica, theory/improvisation, sound healing techniques, and many other instruments on occasion.
If interested in taking lessons on an instrument that Tyson doesn't play, he will refer you to another great local teacher.
