Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is the best time of year to trim trees in San Francisco?

In San Francisco, the best time of year to trim deciduous and evergreen trees is during the cold months (usually from December to February) when the trees are dormant and not actively growing. Avoid pruning during the spring and summer months.

However, you may need to trim your tree and remove dead or damaged branches at any time of year — especially if the branches are a safety hazard or if they put your tree’s health at risk. Also, the best time to prune or trim your trees can vary by the species. But, generally, the best time to prune is when your trees are not producing new leaves.

When in doubt, ask an expert to help you determine the best time to prune and trim your trees. Contact the best tree trimming professionals in San Francisco today.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a landscaper or lawn care professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation call with a lawn care professional or landscaper during the COVID-19 pandemic, take advantage of digital technologies to avoid face-to-face exposure. When searching for lawn mowing, landscaping and lawn care companies online, ask if they’ll do a video call to assess the job and give you an estimate. You can also go over strategies for completing the job and conducting virtual payments to stay safe.

How can I find out if a landscaper or lawn care professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To consult national guidelines on essential COVID-19 service providers and see whether a lawn care professional qualifies, visit a page on CISA’s website called Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This website contains 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors that you can search through. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure so you should also check your city or state’s government website.

Can I use digital payments to pay for outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing, tree trimming and other similar services?

Many outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing and tree trimming companies will likely accept some form of digital payment instead of cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely causing more businesses to adopt digital platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash and Google Pay.

Search professionals’ online profiles to see if they list digital payment services, and ask them about their payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a landscaper or lawn care professional need to enter my home?

Because landscaping and lawn maintenance take place outdoors, it is unlikely that these professionals will need to enter your home.

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, practice social distancing at all times -- even with professionals doing work outside. You can minimize exposure during a consultation by using a video chat service. And when you pay, you can use a digital payment service like PayPal. Discuss strategies with any lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming and lawn care companies you may be considering.

Do landscapers or lawn care professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Landscapers and lawn care professionals generally do not offer remote or virtual services. But if you come across a profile that states the landscaper is offering remote services, it’s best to contact them to see what type of remote work is offered.

Typically, lawn care and landscaping professionals can perform many of their duties without coming into physical contact with clients. Message local lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming, and lawn care companies near you to schedule a video call and inquire about remote services.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

Did a great job on the tree trimming, and worked hard to keep neighbors satisfied and the work area was excellently cleaned after the job was completed.

Sean made it fast and furious :) he removed the big tree from our backyard and trimmed some other trees. We still need his help to proceed after construction is done! Highly recommended. Thanks Sean!

Contacted Sean to take a look at my tree, that appears to be dying. Sean came and took a look, and said all my tree needs is water (no thanks to the drought) and he'll be back in a few weeks to trim it down and make it healthy again.

I needed two palm trees and one yucca cleaned up. One palm tree and the yucca are very tall. Juan Angeles showed up as scheduled and completed the job in around three hours. All three trees were trimmed as discussed. There were lots of palm fronds and yucca spikes that had to be removed and due to the house's configuration had to be taken through the house to the street. When completed the house was spotless as was the back yard. The trees and yucca look great. Very happy with the job that was done by Angeles Tree Service.

Our experience with Guevara Tree Company was very positive. They trimmed/pruned two trees from our yard as well as cut down and disposed of another. We were very pleased with the results. They were flexible on scheduling and very communicative before and during the work to make sure everything was to our standards. We would definitely call Guevara Tree Company to do more work for us in the future.

I looked at several tree service companies and I ended up going with Angele's Tree Service because of all the positive reviews I read, their responsiveness, professionalism, and reasonable prices. They came to my house to look at my large cedar trees before providing a quote. I felt reassured by their knowledge of trees and SF laws. They were open and honest about how much they could prune legally in SF and offered a treatment for one of my trees that looks unhealthy. The day of the job, the crew arrived on time and asked my feedback at certain points to make sure I was ok with trimming back branches that would affect the aesthetics of the trees. I love the results and will hire Angele's again!

Henry and his team did a great job! We wanted help with an overgrown English Laurel tree, 2 trumpet trees, and a dying shrub. We wanted someone who could trim the trees back while promoting healthy growth vs. cut back too drastically. Henry stopped by to provide an estimate and he was able to fit me in the following wk. He is very professional, prompt, and communicated throughout the process. I highly recommend Henry.

Juan's team did a full backyard cleanup for us (small yard), including trimming two trees, some bushes, and weeding. By comparison to a true arborist we hired for a similar job about a year ago, their tree work felt a little sloppy and less artful. The whole project was done quickly, however, and for a good price. Juan was great at follow-up and communication.

Juan and his crew were on time and easy to work with. I was very happy with their work. I had them trim up 10 hedges and clean up 4 trees. One of which was very overgrown. Everything looks great. I would definitely recommend and plan to work with them again.

Rodolfo was very responsive, gave me a reasonable quote and set a date, communicated in between, showed up on time, and did a great job and cleared up after he was done, and he and his crew were friendly and helped out on a few smaller jobs while they were there. Altogether, perfect for what we needed (trimming a giant cottonwood tree).

I had 3 companies come out to give me a quote on trimming a 25 foot and removal of a dead tree. Juan Angele was the the most friendliest and most professional one. He gave me the most reasonable financial quote that I can afford. He was on time and cleaned up after crew very well. I would definitely use this company again and would highly reccomend him.

Sean was willing to listen to our problem with the tree planted by the city infront of our house. They DID NOT tell us that it is our OBLIGATION to maintain it and pay for an arborist ourselves to trim it regularly so it does not obstruct our next-door neighbor's front window. Sean understood our situation and agreed to lower his price and make it affordable for senior citizens like us! We are so lucky we found Sean through Thumbtack!
