I had an excellent experience with Marla. I was nervous about an upcoming solo performance and hadn't sung publically in awhile. Marla quickly measured my ability and where I needed assistance and gave straight forward and incredibly helpful training and guidance. She certainly knows her stuff and is direct but friendly. I would highly recommend Marla for any voice lesson needs. Thanks Marla!May 14, 2015Verified
Marla's teaching style and techniques are outstanding for the dedicated student. I have felt tremendous growth in the past two months working with her. She has the right blend of encouragement and constructive criticism that are essential in a good teacher. She doesn't placate egos or step on them. She gives the right kind of push when a push is needed and knows how help when you start beating yourself up. I highly recommend her for a student at any level of skill.Apr 1, 2015Verified
I have been taking voice lessons with Marla Volovna for 7 months now. In this short time I have progressed faster than I ever had before, in vocal technique as well as in interpretation and musicianship. Marla is very demanding, very honest and very encouraging a killer combo for success. And Marlas commitment to her students progress really extends beyond the weekly lesson, with regular communication of tips to improve technique, interpretation, links to performances, documentaries, archives, etc I highly recommend Volovna Vocal Studio.Apr 1, 2015Verified

- What is your typical process for working with a new customer? It depends on many factors.I do begin with proper breathing and use of the exhale, and show how to connect to the diaphragm. Then I find the vowel that works best for each customer and begin various exercises that connect the sound to the breath.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work? One never stops studying in the music field. I had many teachers, and finally found the great one. Now, I put together the best of all of them and try to be in the moment with each student to deal with each specific need.I have a MB from the New England conservatory, and MM from the Mozarteum in Salzberg and a MFA from Indianna University, Bloomington, but I did not find my technique in any of these famous schools. I coached with some of the most famous teachers in the world and took the best from several great techniques.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?I knew what I wanted very early on. Unfortunately, I did not find good teachers, even at the best schools in the country, and literally searched the world for a great technique.Only after years of struggle, did I find a great technique.
