David came to our place on time and coordination was smooth too. He helped me bring the new toilet to the third floor. Most of the installation went smooth, except the seat design was not good and we ended trying to figure out why it's still moving when the bolts were tight. He was patient enough to try few different time by unscrewing and putting back the entire seat. My current water supply line was short, although he tried really hard use the current one, it didn't fit. Fortunately, he had one on him and he used that one instead ($5). He also came back all the way from the garage (we're on third floor), to make sure assure that the new water level setting was to my liking, when I shared that flush didn't perform as expected. Unfortunately his truck didn't clear my garage clearance, so he had to haul away the old toilet by hand (super heavy as you can imagine) across a long condo garage. Solid guy, great attitude.

Arisel handled a small hardwood repair job in our kitchen. First I'm grateful that he offered his services. Many contractors only bid big jobs. Second he followed on his commitments to me, being on time and following up the next day with a touch up. I did not have to follow up. He was good to work with. Third I think he did an excellent job with the conditions he had to deal with. I recommend him.

He bid $125 to clear the drain of a light well. Came within the half hour arranged arrival window. Swept clean the roof area. Found after the water initially drained that water backed up again. Determined that there was another clog underground near the sewer connection. Since there was no cleanout at the ground level and drain pipes were corroded (I had patched holes with plumbers putty and duct tape) He replaced the pipes for another $250 plus parts. This involved cutting away some cross beams to pull the pips out. Only minor complaint I noticed the next day that was that he didn't close tight the faucet to get water for testing the drain so there was a slow drip.

Water main broke in front yard under cement slab. Called Aqua Stat, they came out that same evening; gave me a fair price for repair; had it fixed the next day. They are very prompt, dependable and do quality guaranteed work. Would use them again for plumbing needs.

I've literally communicated with or contacted at least five contractors over the past two months to complete this flooring job. Salinas was an answer to prayer! Whereas other sites or contractors told me to wait and/or never got back to me or took others jobs, Vyron responded promptly within an hour when I posted the job on Thumbtack. Vyron and Pablo did excellent work putting down a new subfloor and plywood, then installing an LVP (see photos) and a new toilet (not pictured). Vyron communicated about every step of repair and installation and about every purchase for the job. He takes pride in his work and left the work area clean. I'm so glad that the job is finished and that it was done well.

Max did an amazing job for us. We had been having issues with our hot water and have had other people work on it without success. Max arrived in time and was able to trouble shoot the problem quickly. We now have stable hot water in all our showers and from some of the faucets where we were never able to get hot water before! Can’t emphasize enough how happy we are!

I hired Gusanito to install porcelain tiles in my bathroom. He was very prompt--being the first contractor to contact me on thumbtack--and quickly responded to my text messages whenever I had a question. He takes his time and is very detailed in his work. He is also willing to help you with other problems. For example, in addition to installing the tiles, I also wanted to change my sink faucet and shower handles. He agreed to do the extra work at a reasonable price. The tile installation went smoothly, however, we ran into plumbing issues which he couldn't solve. I'm giving him four stars because I hired him on thumbtack for tile installation services, not plumbing. Nonetheless, he agreed to bring his cousin (who is an experienced plumber) over the next day to change my sink faucet at no extra cost. The total work took about two full days to complete, but I'm sure it would have been less if we didn't run into the plumbing issues. So I recommend him but make sure you talk with him thoroughly about what you want to accomplish.

I was in a bind with our bathtub faucet not letting me turn off the water so we had to turn off the main water line. David contacted me very quickly after putting out my need for a plumber. He very clearly answered my questions. He wasn’t going to be able to get me in until the next day do to his busy schedule. He very kindly sent me a recommendation for another plumber when I asked him. Shortly after that he said he could work me in if I was home. It worked out well as I couldn’t get ahold of the other plumber. David came, fixed the problem in no time at all, explained to me what had happened and was out the door to his next job. Thank you again for working me in David!!! We have water again!! We’ll share your name and number when someone has a need!!!

I called Joe because we had a clogged main line that was causing toilet water from our building to back up into our garage. He and his guys took care of the clog and cleanup in less than an hour. They didn't need any ongoing help from me and didn't even need to get in the house. Overall it was an effortless experience and I would definitely hire them again.

Was extremely communicative, arrived on time, was respectful and knowledgeable, went above and beyond to explain what he was seeing and thinking in great detail. It felt more like an education from an expert friend rather than a consultation from a contractor. We will definitely be working with Mr. Rooter going forward!

We had a two-sided sink installed in our garage. This involved running copper hot and cold water pipes, running a drain to existing pipes, and mounting the sink to a concrete wall. Also ask to caulk/seal all sinks, toilets and bathtubs in the house. Gerardo was very professional and did a great job.

We did some drainwork on the outside sewer main. Our experience was great. The job was well understood, well scoped and perfectly carried out. We secured a new patch on the drain opening and could not be happier. I was impressed about the solution to make the cover vandalism resistant by installing a hexbolt. Thank you!

Wow, This guy was great!!! Cory came over to fix my clogged toilet because my plunger wasn't working. He was very kind over the phone and very professional when he arrived. He explained that my main sewer was clogged and a snake needed to be used to clear the blockage. Because I had no clean out, he had to remove the toilet to snake the line. Turned out I had tree roots in my sewer pipe outside. Cory had an awesome camera and I was able to see first hand the cause of blockage and the condition of the pipe. He explained the importance of a building clean out and gave me several different options. For now we installed the clean out, and snaked the roots out the pipe. Eventually we will replace the entire sewer lateral. Cory was very clean, patient and fair. This was a lot of work and I was happy to pay for such great service. I will recommend Cory to friends and family

Kasey hit on all the important things you look for in a professional. He came on time, gave me a fair bid and even did the work immediately which helped us tremendously not slow down a larger project. I highly recommend him and plan on having him back to install a continuous hot water system. Thx Kasey!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often do you clean a septic tank?

For homeowners with a septic system, it’s important to have a regular septic cleaning schedule. To protect ground and drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends residential septic cleaning every three years. Many septic system companies state that you can maintain a healthy system with regular septic cleanings every three to five years. In addition to cleaning, a septic tank inspection once a year will uncover problems and can save you thousands in cleanup and repair.

When waste goes into your septic system, it separates into three parts. The solids (sludge) drop to the bottom, wastewater floats in the middle, and a layer of scum rises to the top. Regularly scheduled cleanings prevent the sludge in your septic tank from building up and clogging your tank, leading to an overflow. Pricing for a standard septic cleaning ranges between $200 and $500, with the national average cost at $315. It’s easier, more cost-effective, and better for your home health to keep your septic tank maintained.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Who pumps septic tanks?

Septic system professionals pump septic tanks. Pros in different states will have different licensing and certification regulations. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and certified, is a legitimate business, and has the appropriate insurance. Damage to your septic system could cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair, so it’s best to hire a qualified professional from the start.

Using an industrial-strength vacuum hose connected to a tanker truck, the septic tank company will pump out the contents of your tank. First they break up the scum of the top layer, then mix the sludge (on the bottom) into the wastewater for removal. To get all the sludge and scum from the tank, pros may use a tool called a septage spoon that loosens stubborn waste from the sides of the tank. After the tank is hosed down and empty, it is inspected for any cracks or leaks that could lead to trouble in the future. The waste in the truck is then transported and disposed of at a waste management treatment center, a cesspool or an approved dumping site.

When should you clean a septic system?

Experts agree that you should clean your septic system every three to five years for optimal system health and safe water. You should also have it inspected every year to catch minor issues before they become major. If you think you may be overdue for a septic cleaning, here are signs that you should call a pro immediately.

  • You’re at capacity: If the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the bottom of the tank’s outlet or if the top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet, your tank needs to be pumped, according to the EPA.
  • It stinks: If you can smell wastewater, call a pro right away to clean your tank, pipes and field.
  • Sewage backup: Raw sewage backing up into the pipes in your home is no fun. The pros can pump out your pipes, clean your tanks and clear any clogs, but it will be a complex and messy job.
  • Pooling water: Water collecting around your tank or drain field can be a sign you need to clean your septic system.
  • Super grass: If the grass above your septic system drain field suddenly gets vibrantly green and lush, the septic tank leak could be leaking sewage and fertilizing your lawn in unwanted ways. Call a pro to inspect it right away.

How much is it to clean a septic tank?

Nobody wants their septic tank to back up. Regular septic cleaning and pumping is important to keep your ground and drinking water protected from harmful bacteria. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends septic system cleaning every three years. The national average cost for a septic tank specialist is $315. Costs for septic cleaning may vary based on where you live, how large your septic tank is, and how long it has been since the last cleaning. If it’s been many years since you’ve had your tank cleaned, the process of breaking up and removing the solids may take longer and could cost more. Typical residential septic tanks range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons. The price range for septic cleaning usually averages $200-$500, with varying by tank size. Repairs or replacement parts will also add to your cost. To keep your septic tank in good health between cleanings, only flush approved items such as toilet paper, and don’t rely on your garbage disposal for composting. Items that don’t break down easily (like lemon rinds or feminine hygiene products) can back up the septic system, leading to clogs and overflow. If you smell the unmistakable odor of sewage or can see sewage bubbling up above your drain field, call for a septic cleaning immediately.
