I hired Casiano's to replace my kitchen faucet. The faucet was making noise and then water spray got clocked. I had already purchased a replacement faucet that was recommended by my HOA, so I just needed someone to come and replace it. I wasn't able to be present, but my renters liked that setup was friendly and professional. When I arrived to inspect the work, I found everything as good as new. I also appreciated Casiano's flexibility to accept payment via PayPal. This allowed me to not bother my renters with payments, inspect the work afterwards and pay without scheduling further visits.

Dennis Parkin replaced my kitchen faucet. He showed up on time on a Monday morning. Took one look at my outdated faucet, knew what I needed, and gave me options on what to spend. He arrived early two days later and completed the job in half the time he originally stated it would take. Dennis is very pleasant, personable and extremely fair with his pricing. He did great work. I wouldn't hesitate to hire him again for any project.

He ran the job very smoothly, accommodating our schedules and ensuring that the project moved forward in an organized and systematic way. There were no cost over runs or mistakes. Jasper was on time, responsive, and did an incredibly high quality paint job on our cabinets and even helped us install new handles, knobs, and hinges in a short amount of time. Our kitchen and bathrooms now have a great new 21st century look (updated from its original 80's look and feel). The quote we were given was extremely fair. For the overall experience of this job - the only word that can be used here is indeed 'outstanding'.

We were remodeling our kitchen and needed someone to install under cabinet lighting with short notice. Bogdan was available the same day we setup the project on Thumbtack. Bogdan was creative in coming up with a solution that concealed both the driver and the wiring. He was also diligent about finishing the project within the time constraint.

GMBC Construction came highly recommended from my in-laws who used Eli and this company to remodel their entire home and they were thrilled with the whole process. We just finished a 400 square foot room addition and we could be happier. Everything went smoothly and professionally. My wife and I are both super busy and knew we needed someone who was going to take care of every detail and when we met Eli, we knew he was our guy. Everything from the plans and permitting, to the final inspection sailed through and was amazing. We could not be happier and we recommend Eli and GMBC to everyone!!! Thank you to everyone there for doing the impossible.

Fantastic experience. He and his assistant arrived ten minutes ahead of schedule, removed their shoes and went straight to work. These guys are no-nonsense professionals who knew what they were doing and were very efficient in installing my new kitchen faucet. The only minor concern I had was that my new faucet was installed at an angle, but I'm not sure why. Regardless, I definitely recommend this pro for efficiency, professionalism and value. Great job!

I glad that I chosen Rudy for my bathroom remodel, everything from the first day went very well, he's estimated very good compared to others, with legal permits, he and his crew not only did my bathroom, also updated my old electricity with also a very good estimate, I always check various estimates, he's always open to do small projects to help my home to look nicer, my home was built in 1956 but with Rudys help is looking superb, I'm in the process to ask Rudy to do my other master bathroom and the powder bath, having a lot of complement from Family and Friends, thank you Rudy and you crew!!

Good Value, High Quality, Efficient Work. We recently bought a house and called on Lifetime Remodeling to help us with a kitchen remodel and replacing the old roof. My wife and I are inevitably more difficult as clients than your average homeowner is, but we could not have been more impressed with Lifetime Remodeling. Firstly, their pricing knocked the competition out of the park, and the completeness and detail in their proposal and scope of work is like nothing I've seen before from contractors . As a home owner we were initially wary of having an additional external project manager on site, but Samuel and Matan from Lifetime Remodeling are absolutely fantastic: knowledgeable, reliable, resourceful and respectful of our role to design the project. The work itself was performed to a really high standard: the crew were excellently coordinated by Frank the foreman; they came when they were supposed to; and were clean and tidy. I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending them to others.

Regina and Jason were simply incredible. From the beginning Regina was honest about costs and timelines. I really appreciated that their proposal was not just a figure, but a complete breakdown of each part of our bathroom remodel and associated costs. I could not be more happy about how the project turned out and the experience of working with Regson. I would no doubt work with them again and will be recommending them to everyone I know.

I hired Sergey and his team to do a complete Bathroom and a partial Kitchen remodel. Having gotten quotes from multiple contractors, we settled on Sergey as his quote was reasonable, but more importantly he promised a quick turn around time. I admit, initially I did not believe the job would be done so quickly, and was mentally prepared for a 1.5X - 2X factor. Not only did they finish the job within the promised time frame, I think they might have been a day or so early. However, that does not mean they did a shoddy job - in fact they strived for perfection in every aspect. For example, the vanity we ordered for the bathroom, had crooked angles as it hadn’t been assembled properly. It was very minor and I was ok with it - however they decided to take their time to fix someone else’s bad work before installing because ‘it was not right’. This came through in every aspect of the job. The team that worked on our house was also very professional, always on time, and cleaned up after themselves everyday, unlike some other contractors I have worked with who leave the place as a war zone until the entire job is done. I am glad I found Wise Stage Remodeling and will be using them for all my future remodeling jobs, and would recommend them to everyone I know.

I contacted Chuck for my mom, she doesn't go online, and she was very pleased with the outcome. I don't know what she paid for the work, otherwise I may have clicked "value" as well. I think she said it was similar to some other quotes she had gotten. What was not similar though, and what my mom was very happy about was the responsiveness, follow through, and results that she received from Chuck and his crew. Months ago, my mom had 2 or 3 estimates given to her but for some reason or another those contractors did not follow through. Chuck was very responsive with call backs and an estimate, and began the project quickly thereafter. His crew was always prompt, continuously working, and each day's clean up at the end was perfect - they very considerate how they left the area. One thing that may be good to mention for those reading this and looking for a contractor, is that my mother and I felt comfortable and safe with them in the house at times we had to leave for work. My mother is older and I am very cautious and skeptical of people in general, but we both quickly noticed that Chuck and each of his crew that showed up were straight forward, easy going and courteous at all times, so they were easy to be around. As for the bathroom remodel, my mom loves it! Even when there was a snag for a second they helped my mom through it and got her to the new bathroom she's been wanting for years--- thanks Chuck! After months of searching for the right contractor to do our remodel of our master bath,we found pacific and the process and the way they handle and do remodels is genius, we just finshed with them about a week ago , and I am beyond happy with the finshed product. Moran and his team kept me informed and involed in the process the whole time , not everything little thing he came to me with , only decision they he knew i would want to make , I selected who i wanted to do the work, i knew everything up front , i wasnt hit with a bill after. Or change orders. and after a bad kitchen refacing( with another company ) that took months and tons of problems , I was kinda scared to countitue , but Pacific gave me my joy back , I will forever be thankful for the time and energy moran put into the project.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
