Our daughter has only done one session with Marissa at InSight so far but we are thrilled with how it went. We thought we were hiring an SAT tutor but Marissa is so much more. She is very experienced in the whole college application process as well and is coaching our daughter on how to apply for -- and get accepted to -- her favorite schools.

Kyle not only is an amazing personal trainer, but an amazing person too. He helped my recover from a back injury that prevented my from doing what I love, and had me jumping and running around in less than 4months.

Curtis coached me, weekly or biweekly, for about a year and a half. I am convinced Curtis helped me listen to a small voice telling me to not make a huge mistake and to turn up the volume on another voice singing a song of beauty and life-long contentment. I'm not a football fan but I watched the Super Bowl this year. Like everyone else, I was dazzled watching Tom Brady come from behind and pull off the greatest upset in Super Bowl history. It was clearly Brady's talent but you knew apart of it was also Belichick's coaching. Working with Curtis is like that. What was also nice about working with Curtis is that he and I both recognized when I (we) had won and when it was time to quit. I will be forever grateful to Curtis.

After working with Dana, I am pursuing a career that fits me perfectly by following a plan we created together. One of the things that surprised me most about working with Dana was that she allowed me to discover what career options were even possible. When I first started working with Dana, I was kind of directionless in where my life was headed. I had a kind of idea of what I wanted to pursue and was passively working towards that goal but I knew I lacked passion. Once Dana and I worked together a little more, she made me get real honest with myself about what I actually wanted out of life and for the first time in my life, pursue a career that actually fit me. Once I had actually settled on a career choice, we collaborated on a plan to make that choice a reality for me. I highly recommend working with Dana if you aren't sure what kind of life you want, or if you do know what you want, she will guide you on how to achieve it.

Regina's coaching support has taught me how to unchain myself from self-sabatoge, cultivate myself in an authentic/true way, to develop more wellness and health surrounding my abundant finances and so on and so on. She's an agent of change-mercy-grace. I owe so much to her wisdom and generosity.

It has been extremely rewarding to have Patti in my corner, encouraging me to reach beyond my limits and helping me to overcome obstacles that hindered my progress. She also helped me to identify some limiting beliefs and replace them with more realistic beliefs. Together, we created a plan that allowed me to take the necessary action to accomplish my goals. I genuinely appreciate her ability to guide me through tough decisions by allowing me a very proactive role in the process. I am now living on purpose with passion and impact! Thank you Patti!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What is a career coach?

If you’re interested in furthering your career and want expert help, a career coach is a smart solution. A career coach is a professional you hire to guide you during a job search or a career transition, or to help you improve and advance in your current position. A career coach analyzes your work situation and learns what your professional goals are. They then create a strategy to help you achieve your targets. Throughout the process they should provide objective feedback and guide you in approaching the process strategically. Here are some of the tools and tasks a career coach may assist you with:

        • Helping you build a strong resume that reflects your work history, potential, and skills
        • Coaching for interviews and strategies for solid answers built around your resume and the target job
        • Defining your career goals
        • Creating a plan for job searching
        • Improving networking strategies and skills
        • Developing strategies for negotiating raises or promotions
        • Assessing why you’re not getting where you want to go
        • Identifying new positions or career opportunities that fit your skills

        Why is career counseling important?

Career counseling can help you discover your career path, help you overcome challenges preventing you from finding happiness in your job, or help you learn more about career opportunities that are available to you. Career counselors are typically counselors who specialize in helping guide people into their best career choices. As professionals, they have typically completed a master’s degree in counseling with a focus on career counseling and bring a nuanced understanding of the emotional blocks that prevent someone from doing what they love or getting ahead in their current position. Here are some of the ways that career counseling can help:

        • Identify your skills and talents and how they correlate to different career paths
        • Educate you about the educational requirements for launching in various careers and what earnings can look like
        • Help you understand the kind of environment you want to work in, and which careers are best suited for that
        • See opportunities to transfer your existing skill set to other career areas
        • Help you identify causes of tension or unhappiness in your current career and how to overcome those difficulties
        • Help you create a game plan for moving forward
        • Provide a safe space for you to understand your feelings about career choices you’re making

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

A career coach provides one-on-one sessions to help you reach your career goals or overcome any challenges you’re having in your career path. The cost to have career coaching can vary based on factors such as the number of sessions you purchase at one time and the experience and rates of your counselor. Career counselors are typically professionals who have earned at least a master’s degree in their field. Based on their academic background, supplemental certifications they have received, and any postdoctoral work they have done, their rates may vary. Typically career counselors offer reduced rates when you sign on for their services on an ongoing basis. A typical price range for career counseling services (nationally) could be $75-$150 per session. Remember to always ask if the career counselor offers a complimentary introductory session. You want to make sure the relationship will be the right personality and counseling style fit to help launch your confidence and upcoming career changes.

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

When it’s time to take your career to the next level, it’s time to hire a career coach. The cost to have a career coach help you with your professional journey will vary based on how many sessions you require, the level of coaching you desire, and the rates of the coach as determined by their experience, expertise, education and training. On average, career coaching sessions can range from 60 to 120 minutes, depending on the professional and what your needs are. Career coaches in smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living will also typically have lower rates than those residing in large metro areas like New York, although most do offer remote coaching. Many coaches also offer a free introductory consultation, which gives you the opportunity to determine if their personality and coaching style are the right fit. It’s helpful to ask the coach about their relevant experience and get references from former clients. Depending on the professional, session rates could range anywhere from under $60 to well over $250 per session. Package discounts are a good way to commit to the relationship as well as get savings on services.

        What is a career counselor?

If you’re feeling lost in your career path, overwhelmed, in need of a job but confused as where to start, or ready for change but uncertain what you want, a career counselor is a good choice for you. A career counselor is typically a licensed professional who has earned a master’s degree in counseling — likely with an emphasis on career counseling. Each state has different licensing requirements for career counselors, so be sure to research before reaching out to a pro.

Due to their academic backgrounds, career counselors often have a more holistic and in-depth approach than a career coach. Career coaches are not regulated by states and also tend to be more business-focused — a good fit for those who know what they want but need help achieving it. On the other hand, a career counselor provides guidance and clarity around some of the more emotional aspects that job hunting and career movement entail. Career counselors meet with you in a series of one-on-one sessions. They assess your personality and learn what drives you. They get a detailed understanding of your work history and your hopes, and often work to help you discover any internal blocks preventing you from going where you want to go. Hiring a career counselor is appropriate at any time in your career, from recent graduate to executive-level management.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
