Chef Barbara is an experienced and versatile chef and teacher. We worked together to plan a highly custom cooking class & dinner for a group of women in honor of our bride friend. I felt listened to as I expressed our group's needs and the details of our event, and she ended up nailing the perfect menu catered to our bride's tastes. I really appreciated Chef's thoughtful, well researched and creative suggestions.

Had Chef Kim over to our Airbnb for a cooking lesson and it was excellent! She was very well prepared and even gave us print out recipes to take home. She was very detailed in her instructions and the food was delicious. She even helped us clean up after the meal. Would recommend her to anyone looking for a fancy dinner party or cooking class for a small group.

Melissa does amazing in-home cooking lessons. We asked to learn how to cook meat on the bone, and ended up with bone-in pork chops, pan sauce to top it, one-of-a-kind couscous, and delicious roasted vegetables - all in a two hour lesson. Melissa was a consummate professional and teacher, but she was also a blast to work with. If you're looking to learn more about cooking, planning a fun date evening at home, or just want to be incredibly well fed, we highly recommend Melissa Bee. - Ryan and Megan

We hired Melissa to cook for us for ongoing restrictive diet-friendly meals. We had three criteria and passed these with flying colours. 1. She is incredibly organized from menu planning to day of cooking to final delivery and storage of food. This is so critical for ongoing bulk meal preparation. 2. She has such a calm, friendly, and sociable demeanor. For someone to be coming to your home on a regular basis, we've learned that personalities meshing are so important. 3. And the above are the least of the compliments. Her food is amazing! As NY foodies, my husband and I are very particular about our food. Melissa has made no salt/no oil/no carb/no sugar taste better and brighter than any 5 star NY restaurant. We look forward to continuing with Melissa as our chef.

Background, attention to detail quality of ingredients, ability to delegate

I originally took bartender training because there was too much time on my hands. I have since grown to love and respect my new skill. After my training, I obtained employment in a night club where my training was put to the test and in a short time, I was serving guests “wine, cocktail, and a beer” in a fast-paced environment. It’s very important for me to keep the entertainment area clean and orderly. If you want to enjoy a fun, memorable evening, try a Touch of Class! During my years as a bartender, I have learned you must be personable with a passion for tending bars and serving guests in a party, fun environment and always being attentive to your guests' needs. Some of the areas I have covered were weddings in Napa; birthday party in Watson-ville; private events in Oakland; corporate parties in San Jose; and high-profile extravaganzas in San Francisco.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.
