TJ is amazing! He is courteous, professional and trustworthy. Most importantly, if he says the job will get done, he will do whatever it takes to get it done — no matter how time consuming and how difficult it is. (AND without overcharging!) He is a man of his word! We had some repairs that needed to be done in our kitchen and master bathroom. He ran into some unforeseen issues that took a lot longer than planned, but TJ handled it without a hitch! We had a leak under our kitchen sink and it damaged our cabinet. The before and after pictures should speak for themselves. We also had an issue in our master bath where our water always came out orange. He is the the first and only person that fixed it on the first try! He has absolutely no idea how happy I was that he fixed our problem! I have to say good, honest, hardworking people are very hard to come by and we were so lucky to have met him! 👍👍👍

We hired Excel Construction to do a complete kitchen remodeling and enlarge the existing space by expanding the walls several feet to the patio area. The new kitchen included the installation of the upper and lower cabinets, new paint, new backsplash, marble counter top, LED lighting and new dishwasher, stove and range. Eyal, the project manager and Revital (the lady that we worked with in regards to all the documents, payments and permits) from the office who did an outstanding job helping us. During the work, we clearly noticed that they were always made sure that the costs will remain the same and won’t pass the budget that was set at first and they made sure the job was done accurately. All the sub-contractors that they employed for our house (carpenters, electricians, painters etc.) were outstanding, qualified and experienced. We were very fascinated that our project Eyal was able to complete the entire kitchen few days earlier than he promised us. We were always given a personal attention by Eyal, who was very good in communication and organized and by Revital. The new kitchen looks perfect and very useful and we strongly recommend them and we will hire them again for any remodeling project we may have.

Daniel, Mario and the rest of the team at World Class Construction are honestly the best crew I’ve ever hired, and I’ve done quite a few remodeling projects over the last 20 years. They are extremely professional, courteous, fairly priced, and best of all – fast! My wife and I were very impressed by the speed at which our luxury bathroom remodel was completed, and trust me when I say this was no ordinary job…. everything was custom, and they stepped up to the challenge and delivered. Overall, we are 100% satisfied – so satisfied in fact, that we immediately hired them again to remodel our garage conversion project. Thank you World Class Construction!! (PS, a lot of companies ask you to write a review… we were not asked – our bathroom just looks that AWESOME ☺.)

Ruben was very fast in contacting me after I submitted my request for demolition of old tile and vanity, and installation of bathroom floor and wall tiling. He also has someone that can come out to do custom glass shower door on top of a bath tub which I also had done. Ruben and his crew were very efficient and quick while working in the bathroom. His prices are reasonable. The tile came out very nice. The only problem I experienced was that two to three times Ruben cancelled on me and we had to reschedule. One time he confirmed he was coming but then later that evening he had to reschedule to another day.

Robert was hired to sand and re-stain our pool deck. He did an amazing job, despite the fact we had one day of rain in the middle of the project. Robert is very skilled at what he does, and his perfectionism shows in the quality of his work. I highly recommend him for anyone looking to upgrade, or remodel their home.

We remodeled our master bathroom, kids bathroom, and kitchen with Skyline Construction. I strongly recommend Skyline to anyone looking for a responsible, transparent, communicative, and above all else, quality professional general contractor for remodeling, renovation, consulting, etc. Communication was timely, something extremely valuable with complex projects. Work estimates and risk factors has high accuracy with regard to both time and cost (this is a very uncommon feat in the industry). Quality of work and professionalism of workers on-site were supreme (I was personally present 2-3 times a day, every day). In addition to all this, Skyline continued to take care of us several weeks after the project was done and the contract ended. They made sure to take care to reseal, re-caulk, and/or fix any problems or flaws we found (we only found minor, trivial stuff) as we started living in the house and as fixtures, plumbing, tiles, and flooring begin to settle into their final resting positions. Skyline anticipated this settling, informed us that this is natural, and continued to send in their workers and technicians to make sure every single detail was excellently taken care of. Highly recommended. If you go with Skyline, you choose to go with a real pro. I am definitely hiring them for my next project.

We had 3 bathrooms remodeled by hillstar construction, which included 2 complete remodels (master bath and Jack/Jill) and 1 minor updating of guest bath. This is our first remodeling experience and lior and his crew made every effort to accommodate our needs and requests. We relied on lior advise for details and very happy of the outcome. lior responded promptly and communicated well, and his attention to details was really good. We also noticed that hillstar construction used higher end product than other contractors when we compared the estimates and asked specific questions. They installed frameless glass showers and completely replaced floors on two bathroom, changed countertops to quartz replaced we actually had to change painter (from different paint company) to lior crew as we did not like the original work. lior crew completely removed wall paper before painting, which original paint person could not do. Major part of renovation was completed less than 2 weeks, just couple of hours for installing glass showers later and some paint work due to change of painter along the way. Overall, we are extremely satisfied with the quality of the work done and the outcome. Also, LIOR went beyond as a contractor as to helping us manage the house while we were away during renovation, and it is very much appreciated. Bottom line, he can really be trusted for the quality of work he provides.

I contracted work from CJS over several years for my house. They initially helped us with creating a footing, repairing the foundation and lifting the house since there house had settled down cracking the foundation. This was our first house and we did not anything about construction, so, even thought we knew that the house had settlement issues, it was really disheartening to learn about the extent of the work. Fortunately CJS was there to help and guide us through the process of repairing and straightening the house. Their work was high quality and they even helped us with other repairs (flooring, painting, etc.) all with very reasonable pricing (and even helping us with a payment plan). About a year after the first repairs, we had to resort to CJS for help because the bath tub in the upper floor had ruptured and a lot of water came gushing down to the bottom floor. Again, CJS did a high quality work at very reasonable pricing. Helping again with other needed repairs like a new electrical panel and water drain with a sumpump. The last job that CJS performed was the relocation of a jacuzzi next to a swimming pool, fixing a barbeque and repairing the pavement in the patio. Again, great quality work and reasonable pricing. If you need experienced, trustworthy contractors that charge you reasonable prices, CJS is your contractor.

Great experience working with Double Oak Construction. I brought them in for my bathroom remodel and it turned out above my expectations. I am not great when it comes to design but my bathroom needed serious updating. They assisted in the design and navigated me through the experience. Obviously the job turned out wonderful and I am bringing them on for additional work. Thanks Double Oak, Ron, and Elena!

Perri was amazing. I had contacted other vendors prior and some responded but never followed up to make an appointment. Perri emailed me and asked how he could earn my business.. He promptly went out to my home and addressed the issues. He also advised and corrected some other stuff that was critical to retaining the overall maintenance and integrity of my home. I am in Real Estate. I work with many many vendors.. but I didn't have a So Cal roof vendor. Perri is my new Gem and will be performing all work for me in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.
