Blas helped me out with math, basics & Algebra 2. He came to my house for a couple months. I was impressed at how knowledgable he was in math & at life. He really went out of his way to not only be a tutor, but a positive role model. He was always punctual & helped me with any problem I needed help with, even if it wasn't in the section we were doing, or math related at all. Blas was a wonderful tutor, but most of all a mentor. Really pleased with his service.

I do not have enough kind words to say about Elsa! She is truly phenomenal in every way -- from her kindness and caring demeanor, to her sincere dedication and commitment to helping me learn Spanish. Right from the start, I knew that Elsa was the right fit: she was, of course, a native Spanish speaker with a wealth of cultural and linguistic knowledge, but more than that, she had clear plans of the best approach to teach me Spanish based on my prior knowledge level (which was very basic). She always gives extra time to her clients, and thus is extremely generous with her time, hosting us in her home and not stopping until we finish the lesson at hand. Unlike my previous schooling experiences learning Spanish, Elsa personalizes each lesson based on our progress and in ways that are conducive to learning Spanish in everyday life. Her experience teaching Spanish truly shows in each lesson. While there are certainly many Spanish instructors to learn from, Elsa has to be one of the best -- I really recommend choosing her in your journey to learn Spanish. Besides being an excellent teacher, she is truly just a wonderful person -- she is caring, genuine, and altogether an extraordinary teacher to learn Spanish from, with a positive and encouraging attitude at an excellent value. I am grateful for her help so far and look forward to many future lessons with her in the future.

Ray has been tutoring my daughter for over 3 months now and we have seen a great improvement in her math grade. I had tried three tutors before I found Ray and I am so thankful that we did. I explained to him that my daughter was having a difficult time in her Algebra class and that I was having a hard time explaining it, as it is the new common core method. I mentioned to him that my daughter is very shy and I wasn't sure he would get her to talk much but to my surprise, he really has done a great job in getting her to talk through each math problem. He engages my daughter and encourages questions especially when he suspects she isn't really sure on a particular math problem. I can't give enough praise to Ray; he is always on time and gets right to work, he never leaves unless he's sure my daughter understands the math lesson. My family and I are very pleased with the progress my daughter has made and we would highly recommend Ray to any parent that needs a math tutor.

I have recently studied Spanish with Luisa for about two years. During that time, my skills in Spanish have significantly improved. In addition to a Master’s Degree in Spanish, what sets her apart is her ability to communicate to the student the knowledge that she possesses. She is simply an outstanding teacher. I higher recommend her to anyone who is serious about learning or improving their Spanish skills. Tony Castaneda Attorney At Law

I am so happy I found Maryam from Exclusive Review on Thumbtack. After we met about 20 minutes I decided to give her a chance to be my tutor. But she said if I don't like her or feel uncomfortable we can stop anytime. I have taken 4th lesson with her I feel very comfortable because she is very nice and professional. Maryam is trying so hard to make my English better. Now I see her only 2 hours a week, but I would like to see her more because I am enjoying my classes. I highly recommend Maryam.

As an adult, I knew learning a language was going to be hard (I had to learn Spanish to advance in my career). However, Ann made it easy and extremely fun! I felt like the pace of her teaching style was fast enough to make sure I was learning everything but also she allowed time for me to ask questions and work on my pronunciation. Ann is trustworthy and I felt very comfortable around her. I give her my highest recommendation! If you wanna learn Spanish, look no further!

Frank is not only a wonderful tutor but person as well. He really cares about his students success. He builds his lessons around how students learn individually and I think that is really important. He tutored me in college level Italian, however, he also teaches Spanish and French of all levels. He made himself available when I had college finals and midterms and I was very grateful. He's willing to give you mock tests and exercises to further develope skills to prepare for an exam or quiz. Would highly recommend him!

After searching for the perfect local spanish teacher, I found Dalila Miranda through thumbtack.com! Dalila helped me improve my spanish in an effective, private, fun, and customized manner. I felt more at ease, confident, and motivated with each session. After living in Buenos Aires for a few years I was speaking “fossilized spanish”, basically meaning that I was self taught by speaking with the common people, and I had the incorrect spanish already ingrained in my memory. I was able to communicate with people, but I needed help with my grammar. Dalila helped me to understand proper sentence structuring, as well as tenses. I wanted to continue to learn spanish as they speak it in Argentina, and Dalila was able to accommodate this request! Recently I went back to Argentina to visit friends and my husbands family, and everyone noticed a huge improvement in my spanish! I am very happy with my experience at LA Spanish, and I highly recommend contacting Dalila to help you with your spanish! She is very timely, honest, caring, thorough, and customizes her lesson plans to fit your needs!

Nancy es genial! Nancy and I have been doing lessons together for about a month now and she's really helping my Spanish quite a bit! She cares deeply about her students and goes out of her way to make you feel comfortable when learning. She is patient but also encouraging, which I think are both required when helping someone learn a language. We have fun homework assignments and practical real life situations that help develop language learning. I didn't know much of the Spanish language at all so we started with the basics; the alphabet and pronounciation, and have now worked up to more complex topics like reflexive verbs and the preterite and imperfect tenses. Nancy sincerely cares about the Latin and Spanish culture and you can tell by her enthusiasm. I would definitely recommend her as a teacher.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
