My daughter and her friend have met with John 3 times so far for SAT prep. They have been very happy with each session. The first session was diagnostic and the subsequent sessions have been spent discussing problems and techniques. John is very easy to work with. They do not feel bad when they make mistakes or do not understand a concept. We plan to do a total of 10 sessions before taking the SAT.
Kate is truly the most amazing tutor you will find. I searched for weeks for someone to help me with a graduate school prep math class, and although there were many options, the people I talked with seemed difficult to relate to and even though they seemed intelligent, I didn't know if I could learn well from their style of teaching. Then...I found Kate. She not only knew all of the material that I had to learn, but was able to explain things in a way that I understood. She is extremely patient and actually made the material as interesting as possible. I would absolutely recommend her for GMAT prep, any college level or grad school math. Her background says it all but when you work with her you see that she is much more-it is her personality and ability to break concepts down that really make the difference. It was also very easy to schedule and communicate with her.
Monica helped my 11th-grade son prep for his statistics final after falling behind a bit on the coursework. She helped him catch up in a 2-hour session and he got an A! We are continuing to use Monica to prep for the SAT. My son likes her very much and I am impressed by her professionalism and warm personality. We are glad we found her!
Met with John once or twice a week over the course of several months during my GMAT preparation. I started out with a 13th percentile quantitative score. After working with him I was able score in the 73rd percentile on my first official GMAT, exceeded my initial goal by scoring ABOVE a 700. I had no formal quantitative training or experience prior to studying; the last math class I took was as a sophomore in high school (a decade ago). Each time I met with John, he was able to go beyond simply correcting my mistakes. He clearly explained the overarching reasoning, strategy and logic behind a certain problem. This is something the video explanations in GMAT curriculum do not do as thoroughly as John. If you're looking for someone to discuss GMAT concepts with in a clear and intelligent way, I highly recommend him. I also studied using curriculum like Target Test Prep, but John helped me tremendously by working through the problems I struggled with step by step and identifying any weak spots in my quant skills. He understands the GMAT and is able to identify the kinds of questions that likely would or would not appear on the exam. Finally, John served as a strong source of moral support throughout a challenging three months of study atop a full time job. When I wanted to try a new curriculum or ask him about tricky questions via email, he would always offer thoughtful feedback in response. His responses were especially helpful when I scored low on practice exams; John's feedback always helped me put things in perspective and helped me get back up and try again. He was very flexible and willing to work with my schedule and make time when needed, often on short notice. In short, I couldn't have done it without him!

If math sounds synonymous with dancing naked in a conga line at the wedding of your second cousin, then you definitely need Kick Ass Tutors. Much like the naked conga, math for me is an awkward long forgotten series of patterns and moves that I only tried rarely and with much taunting and embarrassment. Insert my future. It now depends on a complex mathematical dance that I have yet to master. I consider my options: 1) a high priced test preparation factory, 2) a stack of heavy books that will be later used as the legs to a coffee table or 3) a random I find on craigslist to tutor me. I'm not sure if the classroom style test prep I'll receive at a big name corp is worth the value of a gold coin. I'm also not sure if I'm disciplined or savvy enough to navigate a labyrinth of test prep books on my own. Initially, I choose option 3. I've had lots of math tutors and my craigslist find was particularly abysmal. He had never taken the GRE and was a scholar equivalent to John Nash (i.e. see film "A Beautiful Mind"). Not only was my craigslist friend as perceptibly brilliant, but also taught me math in a similar method to the aforementioned film and savant-- which equated to a series of murmurings, scribbles and assurances that what I was learning was rather simple. Ack. Unfortunately, the numbers just wouldn't float in front of me and I decided to see what else I could do to prepare. After much googling and panic, I discover "Kick Ass Tutors" on thumbtack and meet up with Karim. Equally brilliant, but far more articulate than the former Nash understudy-- Karim offered clear step by step instructions and more personalized attention than I would have received with a more well-know test prep company. He also knew the GRE, had a set curriculum and was able to successfully get me to do the mathematical tango. All in all, save your time and your wallet and go with KickAssTutors. Karim is a mathematical rock star, but an even better teacher. Highly recommended!
