RIcardo was great - super helpful, knowledgeable and efficient. He was incredibly responsive and was willing to pitch in on additional things to help make my move out as smooth as possible. For projects he helped install some flooring, paint, move some furniture and patch some holes. Would recommend him for sure.

My last contractor did not perform and left me with an unfinished bathroom. I was nervous and a bit skeptical to hire someone off thumbtack, given my nightmare experience with the other contractor. H & H proved to be an excellent choice and i'm so glad that I chose them instead of the other three contractors. He's prompt and courteous, very thorough even from the beginning. And this is the reason why I chose them over others. H & H is very meticulous and takes pride of his work and more importantly he communicates very well throughout each step of the remodeling process. We discussed about what materials used, layout of tiles and H & H gave me his honest input which is invaluable. They came on time each morning and work tirelessly to give us a beautiful finished bathroom within budget. I only wish if I have known them sooner.

Pros: Jasper was prompt in responding, punctual, friendly, and completed the work quickly. I was impressed that he finished this project in one day; whereas other contractors seemed to indicate it was more work and more difficult. I would hire him again. Some areas he can improve: There were a couple of minor areas that were knicked on our kitchen island that I didn't notice until cleaning up. Also, I think he could have done a little better cleaning up the island- wiping down the cabinet fronts that had a light layer of dust (I did this myself). Finally, I gave him a box of stain & top coat that the previous owners left to us. He applied them but I noticed they didn't leave the counter shiny, like the finish we had before he sanded. After Jasper left, my husband realized we were missing the water sealant coat which we had in the garage. So now we are applying this coat ourselves to make the island water- proof and give it the same shine. This isn't totally Jasper's fault since I gave him the supplies but I would have liked if he would have noted that something seemed to be missing or off (or given his recommendations on what he would have stained/sealed it with to make sure the wood stayed water proof.) Overall, I'm happy with the work.

Gerardo was exceptionally communicative and easy to work with on top of doing high-quality work on time and on budget. What else can one ask for in a contractor?? He responded to email and text within minutes and showed up on time on a Sunday of Memorial day weekend. He installed our new kitchen island sink, including an additional drain that he had not been aware of before arrival. Rather than make it more complicated, Gerardo went quickly to the nearest hardware store, figured out the parts needed, and got the job done quickly. He worked cleanly, was very conscientious of our furniture, floors, personal items etc, and did it all with a smile and good attitude. After completing the work, Gerardo took the time to test and re-test every aspect of his work, and even correct some minor mistakes made by our previous plumber. I would not hesitate to recommend Gerardo, and will definitely hire him again in the future!

Bogdan was a gift. He and his team installed ~2000 SQft of Bamboo Hardwood floors, a marble entry way, tile floor in the laundry room and bath, built a tile shower from scratch, matched and installed granite in a half bath and full guest bath, and repaired several small but important plumbing issues along the way. Bogdan was respectful and considerate of our priorities. He worked with us with patience, always checking in to make sure we were happy with the choices and installation. For example, he was able to create a seamless transition between the tile and hardwood and marble that made a big difference in how the flooring flows- no tripping on t-moulding ! I would happily recommend Bogdan for home improvement projects.

We had a general idea of what we wanted for our front yard but got overwhelmed/didn't have the time to deal with all the details and vision for the end product. We set out looking for a landscaper that would have the creativity/skill to create something we couldn't visualize. After meeting with a few people, Rubin completely won us over. He was able to map out a general plan and design by the end of our 1st meeting and started breaking ground faster than I could send emails to other contractors that "we were going with someone else." Rubin and his team made efficient, amazing decisions about each step in the process. He accommodated our schedule and would work around our times to sit down and have a meeting about every phase of the project. He was always honest, thoughtful, excited, realistic, and fair. Rubin would find samples of stone, rocks, and plants, place them in a way he thought WE would like and come back with new ideas if we questioned it even a smidge. It was assuring working with someone that had the gamate of experience and love for work. His background in horticulture really helped us make good decisions/compromises between plants I wanted vs ones we needed in different areas of the yard. In the end, he was able to incorporate everything our our list and more! Our front yard looks amazing and we have been getting compliments from the neighbors and random cars stopping in front of our house to look/take pictures. I totally get it....I did the same thing for MONTHS. But I have to tell you, its not worth it. Call Rubin and he will make something better for YOU!! THANKS RUBIN!!!!

We were thoroughly satisfied with the concrete work done by Kris Fredrickson, Anderson Construction’s concrete contractor. Our new driveway and sidewalk look great. Kris listened to us and did his best to accommodate our wishes, going above and beyond. We would definitely hire him again and recommend him to others. And Mike Anderson stayed in constant communication w/us making sure that we were satisfied with how the project was proceeding.

I ended up interviewing 10 different contractors for our exterior siding job because there were so many different opinions on what needed to be done and how best to do it. I'm so glad that we ended up going with Kris and his team. Great communication throughout, incredibly high quality of workmanship on a very difficult job (it is an older house that hasn't been maintained very well before we bought it). I really appreciated Kris' attention to detail and letting us know what was going on throughout the 6 week long process. Also did a great job working with the county inspector, which is never an easy process. These guys are pros - won't hesitate to hire them again for our next house project!

I hired Regina and Jason team to remodel my upstairs bathroom. They are a very good team: Regina is very good in the tile work while Jason is great with the foundation work. They are also very fun to work with. I am very happy with the results and will not hesitate to recommend them to anyone who needs nice remodeling projects.

I wanted to expand my driveway by 100 square feet. I talked to a few contractors and some came out and gave a bid and others blew me off. Mario was different from the rest. He set up an appointment with me for the next day and he showed up on time. He quoted me a price which I eventually accepted. We set a date for him to do the work. He called me and said he could do it a day earlier. I said great. He completed the job in two days and it looks great. His workmanship was very good. He took out 6" of dirt, put in 1-2" of gravel and pour 4-5" of concrete. He matched the expansion joints up with the existing driveway and it looks great. I would heartily recommend Mario. From my experience I would say he is honest, trustworthy with high integrity.

Giving a thumbs up to Fatos for his work remodeling and extending an outside deck. He works by the hour with direct reimbursement for materials. His workmanship is top notch and I am very satisfied with the end product His initial estimate of about two weeks for this project was about right. I had the initial estimated quantity of materials delivered and paid for, then he got the rest ad-hoc as needed for which I reimbursed him. I've done plenty of construction myself, both contracting and with a hammer. But I wanted this done quickly and didn't have the time myself (mom's house in Napa) as I don't live nearby. Was a little nervous about the hourly arrangement as this can remove incentive to get work done timely and pad the bill, especially as I couldn't be there constantly to oversee. Happy to say Fatos worked hard and honestly and I feel I got good value for the money. To be clear he is a handyman, not a licensed contractor. This means liability is on the customer and any potential dispute resolution can be murkey. With that said, I recommend him for your small to medium sized projects.

I contacted Chuck for my mom, she doesn't go online, and she was very pleased with the outcome. I don't know what she paid for the work, otherwise I may have clicked "value" as well. I think she said it was similar to some other quotes she had gotten. What was not similar though, and what my mom was very happy about was the responsiveness, follow through, and results that she received from Chuck and his crew. Months ago, my mom had 2 or 3 estimates given to her but for some reason or another those contractors did not follow through. Chuck was very responsive with call backs and an estimate, and began the project quickly thereafter. His crew was always prompt, continuously working, and each day's clean up at the end was perfect - they very considerate how they left the area. One thing that may be good to mention for those reading this and looking for a contractor, is that my mother and I felt comfortable and safe with them in the house at times we had to leave for work. My mother is older and I am very cautious and skeptical of people in general, but we both quickly noticed that Chuck and each of his crew that showed up were straight forward, easy going and courteous at all times, so they were easy to be around. As for the bathroom remodel, my mom loves it! Even when there was a snag for a second they helped my mom through it and got her to the new bathroom she's been wanting for years--- thanks Chuck! Paul Herboth recently installed a large, raised deck for me in West Salem. From beginning to end, the project went quickly and smoothly. As a person who had never before had reason to hire a contractor, I felt able to trust in Mr. Herboth's honesty and expertise to ensure that the job was done right. He is intelligent, hard-working, friendly and respectful. The deck turned out beautifully in nearly no time. He used what little down time there was to do extra work, and kept my project moving forward, no matter what minor obstacles came up. The finished deck is even nicer than I had envisioned. The cost of the project stayed within the very reasonable, estimated budget. All in all, this was a very positive experience, and I would not hesitate to recommend Mr. Herboth's services to anyone.

Aldo is absolutely wonderful to work with! We purchased our home in 2014 and he has led three different renovation projects for us since then. And, when we save up for our next round of renovations, we will certainly go to him again! What we appreciate most about Aldo is his honesty and warm nature. He never led us astray, never tried to overcharge us, and never tried to get us to do more work than we needed do. He was open and upfront throughout the entire process for each project. He was also warm, friendly, and so easy to work with. Before we started our first round of renovations, many people warned us about contractors who would extend timelines. But Aldo is amazing when it comes to timelines! He sticks to them! We also love how responsive Aldo is. Whenever we texted him with questions or updates regarding our project, he immediately responded. And this is all on top of doing beautiful work!! We highly recommend Aldo!!

We recently hired Tony Cacharelis (tile contractor from "Pro Tile") to finish a bathroom project in our Oakmont home. My wife and I are very pleased with the finished product. Working to accommodate my timeline, Tony advised me of the prep work I needed to complete before the tile work could start. Tony followed up 2-3 times before I was ready to start the tile work. When the tile work began, Tony provided a schedule of work and consulted with my wife and I throughout the process. A true professional. Tony arrived on time daily, finished each step of the process as he described, cleaned up daily, and he provided options to us along the way...which my wife particularly enjoyed. The finished product is absolutely beautiful! Accordingly, we intend to hire Pro Tile to do the tile work in our upcoming kitchen and mud room remodel this year as well. We are recommending Pro Tile to our friends and neighbors (many who stopped by to view the work process). Good job Tony!

I cannot begin to express how happy and satisfied I am with the work done by Epic Construction. Claudiu and his entire team were an absolute pleasure to work with. Always on time and always took the time to explain and explore all the option available for a cost-efficient project. The final result was above and beyond what I had envisioned, and needless to say I was extremely happy it. I hired CFI Construction to frame a new 501 sq ft building on our property to be used as a sewing studio. Today, they started and finished framing the walls, and enclosing the entire building with shear panels. Next week, when the trusses arrive, they are going to install them and install roof shearing. I learned of CFI two days ago on Thumbtack. Having observed their work today, I feel like the A team just fell out of the sky into my project. They are phenomenal in every respect. Their work, honesty, and work ethic are models for the construction industry. They have years of experience framing large projects, both residential and commercial. I was humbled that they chose to work on my project. They are not solely a framing company. They can build a building from start to finish, I just happened to hire them for framing. Having enjoyed today's experience, I'm going to use them for more phases of our project. Both the owner of the company (Steve) and one of his sons (Drew) were on site the entire day, as well as their crew of 5 framers. I wanted to write this review now, even though they still have trusses to install and the front porch to frame, because I want other users of Thumbtack to have the same benefit of a 1st class, licensed, professional construction company, as I did today. I strongly recommend that you seek out CFI Construction for your projects. They are the real deal. Thank you Steve and Drew.

Mark was wonderful to work with. He responded quickly to messages on Thumbtack and via text. He was punctual and flexible with our schedule. He walked through everything with us, listened to our concerns and needs, and worked with us to stay within our budget and timing, and sequenced projects accordingly. He also has a great sense of humor and was pleasant to talk with. We were very happy with his work and the work of the professionals he worked with for electrical, plumbing, and painting. The work that was done: removal and replacement of 2 windows, walls, and flooring where there was water damage, wood rot, and the start of mold; adding a door to access the space under the front stairs and creating a storage space with tiled floor and drywall; waterproofing / sealing the brick of our front steps and porch; removing carpeting and laminate flooring and installation of new laminate flooring; installing siding on the front of our house and painting of the front of the house (2 stories); texturizing and painting walls; installing a wet bar / kitchenette; replacing shower pan, tile, and shower door; removal of tree and bushes in front yard. I think that’s everything. We highly recommend Mark and would happily work with him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

For more on how to remodel a bathroom and bathroom tiling check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
