John has completed a couple of projects for me and my family, all of which I was satisfied with. He's installed a back entry door, did drywall/plaster work in our bathroom, and painted our guest room. I was very satisfied with John's work ethic and his prices were very reasonable. He is a trustworthy handyman and I will on him again for more projects. Miguel-Lakeside,CA

I've used other plumbers in the past, but 911 Plumbing left me amazed. The plumber explained to me what he had to do and gave me tips how to prevent the same issue from happening. And he left my kitchen clean. Trustworthy quality work all the way around. 👍

Overall David did a very good job installing a kitchen counter from Lowes and sink/faucet from Costco. However, we had to call him to come back the next day as the right sink was leaking at the drain. Turns out not enough plumbers putty was used. Also forgot to screw the dishwasher back to the underside of the new counter. But then about 3 weeks later or just a few days ago, the right sink drain starting leaking again. The gasket wasn't sealed properly against the underside of the sink, it was distorted. Looks like the paper gasket was used then the rubber gasket and it should have been the other way around. So we went ahead and pulled the whole thing apart ourselves, got new gaskets and plumbers putty and redid the whole thing. Now hopefully it is fixed permanently.

I called Isaac and he responded to me right away. After few minutes he arrives in my doorstep and did start working on my leaking faucet in my bathroom. He did great on the job and yadaaa!! Leak no more! Plus which i didnt expect him to do is he did an extra mile in fixing the insinkerator in my kitchen and did troubleshoot my dishwasher as well. He even did the extra work for free. He did a lot for a reasonable price. in fact I have hired him already for my next project. Surely, i will recommend him for all your plumbing needs. Thank you Isaac!!

Mr.Ruben Reyes really knows his stuff he was are 3rd quote for what we thought was a root problem in our pipes and it was like night and day between him and the other plumbers. Not only did he locate a second service pipe that allowed him to snake an addition 40 ft that was unknown to us or the other plumbers but he was by far the best priced and honest of the three. He left us complete satisfy.

He did a better than average job and did it in a very timely fashion. The three things that I was disappointed about were, no clean up after job was complete, didn't cover the appliances in kitchen and he still has the key to my property.

Travis did an amazing job! All work was done quickly and neatly. As you can see by the pictures, he installed a barn door, french doors, mirrors and bathroom fixtures (2 Bathrooms), and a small cabinet in the bathroom. Before he was done with what I had originally hired him for, I was already working on a list of other things I needed him to do for us. He also installed outside lighting beautifully. I Highly recommend Travis for any of your needs. I will definitely be contacting him in the future. THANKS Travis!

Marathon is the only company I trust to work on my 2 homes. They remodeled my out dated 3 bed/1 bath house and turned it into a beautiful and spacious 3 bed/2 bath. They up graded my galley kitchen and turned it into a gorgeous and spacious open kitchen. They added a much needed bathroom, turned my very small living room into a great room, gave me functional closets, extra storage space and got rid of that unsightly popcorn ceiling. Isaac worked with me hand-in-hand from start to finish and insured I was happy with the progress on my house. He did excellent work from design, to demolition, to rebuilding. He did everything from plumbing, electrical, windows/doors, drywall, flooring, paint (indoors and out), fixtures.....and more. Marathon completed the remodel on time, went above and beyond, and did it at a very good price. It is rare to find an honest, trust worthy, company that takes pride in their work. Well, Marathon is it and I couldn't have asked for a better contractor. Thank you Marathon!

Tom, We are very pleased with the remodel of our two bathrooms. Everything we planned, colors, lighting, custom cabinets, counter tops, sinks, toilets, Jacuzzi tub, shower, pocket doors and hardware came together and created the dream baths we had hoped for. Our remodel required gutting two bathrooms and changing a bathroom with a shower into a Jacuzzi tub and a bathroom with bath tub into a shower. Because of this, we greatly appreciated working with you to improve on our initial designs and your suggestions of more cost effective ways to implement them. We also appreciated your willingness and ability to follow through with various changes we made as the job progressed. We were always pleased to see your employees arrive, as they were all about doing the best for us each day. They came to the job clean and ready to work with a positive attitude. They are highly skilled professionals and they were always accommodating, in working with us to meet our needs. We kind of miss seeing them now that the job is completed. It was a pleasure to have you and your employees remodel our bathrooms. You were truly Innovative in meeting our remodel design needs. We highly recommend your company, We’re Innovative, for all remodeling. John and Cathy

Where to begin... Dirk is that guy that can fix pretty much anything. Been living in a house for a few years and some things annoy you? Dirk can fix it. Looking to remodel a bathroom or kitchen and need a guy that knows how to install certain things? Dirk can do it. Need help assembling a project. Dirk can do that too. He’s great and has helped us with a complete kitchen remodel. An outdoor bbq island. An outdoor spy system and assembling a playground! To top it all off he’s such a nice person and a great guy! I would highly recommend you give him a call. You won’t be disappointed.

I will be calling on Matt from now on for any tasks that need a contractor, handyman, or jack-of-all-trades! He is ultra responsive and his rates are extremely reasonable - especially considering the excellent skills he brings to the task and his “let’s get this done” work ethic. Matt is professional, courteous, very conscientious yet flexible: so easy to work with! He responded to my handyman request within minutes of my posting it. We worked out details at that time, he accepted the job and he had everything completeed at my home 36 hours later! While working steadily, quickly and effectively, he still took the time to involve me in “design” or “installation” decisions when there were options - something I really appreciated. He’s a great person; left the work areas clean and tidy and left me feeling I’d found a great resource!

Juan one-handedly remodeled on of my bathroom floor and vanity. He was courteous, diligent, and very personable. He wanted to ensure I was satisfied every step of the remodel. If I were to remodel again and want true workmanship than Juan is your man. Thank you for turning my 1970's bathroom to a modern, hotel-like. For sure this is our "guest bathroom" with all the amenities. Juan was also willing to take on a very hard vinyl fence replacement, basically correcting a mistake and accomplished a pretty hard goal. I look forward to working with him again and recommend him 100%.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
