Jenny was a fantastic ACT tutor for my son! I could not have picked a better tutor. Jenny worked with him this summer and was able to quickly ascertain his areas of strength and areas for needed development for the ACT. She also quickly assessed his learning style and put together an efficient customized learning/tutoring plan and tutoring schedule for the summer that helped him make huge strides in both his strongest and weakest sections of the ACT, improving his already high comprehensive test results by 5 points thus far with another week of tutoring yet to go! In particular she did an amazing job tutoring him on the English portion, helping him go from a 26 to a 35 in that section! He has really enjoyed working with her and looked forward to their tutoring sessions. I will be signing my younger son up for ACT tutoring with Jenny next summer for sure!

I was signed up to take a Kaplan course for GMAT prep and was talking to a co-worker about it when they told me their story. They took one of the same Kaplan courses I was signed up to take and didn't get their desired GMAT score. In their second attempt, they signed up for private tutoring with John Easter, one of Elite Home Tutoring tutors, and their GMAT score improved by over 100 points. After hearing this story, I called to cancel my Kaplan class & signed up with Elite Home Tutoring, with a special request to work with John. During my studies, I decided that I wanted to take the GRE instead of the GMAT. I explained this to my tutor John and to Eric at Elite Home Tutoring and the change was so simple. John is not only skilled in GMAT prep but GRE prep as well. So the only thing that would need to change were the materials. If you're looking for the best resources for test prep I highly recommend Elite Home Tutoring. I have no complaints!

Joseph Descans helped me with the editing of several documents. His knowledge and editing skills were outstanding, and his patience with the process was the best part. It can be tremendously frustrating when you have "writer's block" and the words just don't come out right, but a patient tutor is such a great asset to have in your back pocket!

Kim was great . She explained everything to me and gave simple directions that I can understand and she was very patient when it came to her payment . I had a hard time trying to do the pay pal or anything that involves the computer or my phone even . She was great to work with . ! She also sent me 2 resumes that I can choose from and they turned out great ! And it was done in the time frame that I needed .

Rebecca R. – San Diego State University (Business and Marketing) “I met MathWizJohn when I was lost in my Accounting class. I felt like there was no way I was going to be able to learn so much material and turn my grade around when I was already so behind. The class was moving quickly, and the problems seemed to be from another planet or book I hadn’t read!! The tutors here were able to slow things down to my pace, show me the material in a way I understood it, and were always encouraging. I was able to salvage a B in the class (clutch), and since then I have received help in Acct 202 and Fin 323. MWJ’s has helped me stay on top of my tough classes, and my grades have improved a lot!”

    About

QUESTION: If this method is so simple, why didn’t anyone figure it out before? .......................................... ANSWER: Frankly, we’re all scratching our heads and wondering the very same thing. Once a student experiences the ease and simplicity of the Universal Reading Method, they’ll likely wonder why reading is taught any other way. History has shown us many examples of “game changing” technology that, once accepted, has had the ability to instantly alter the status quo. Just as in most of those prior situations, this method is likely to meet resistance at first. People often have a difficult time with big paradigm shifts in any field. There is an entire system in place set up to defend “the way it’s always been done” and many people might feel threatened. After all, the old methods worked for most of us, right? Well… clearly not. It is estimated that up to ¼ of the adult population in the United States is functionally illiterate, with millions more inexplicably “graduating” high school every year. Tackling this huge problem with existing methods hasn’t worked, nor can it work! Those systems are far too slow and cumbersome in their approach. Put simply, the goal of the Universal Reading Method is to help wipe illiteracy off the face of the English-speaking world. It might take some time to accomplish that, but now we at least have a suitable tool to tackle this growing problem. We hope you’ll give us a try. You have nothing to lose but more years of unnecessary frustration for the challenged reader that you know.

    About

What makes me such an effective tutor/educator is that I can relate to students on their level. If they don't understand important material, I am patient in further educating them until they fully comprehend. I have a BA in English literature from a university on the East Coast. I was an editor for over a year and a half reading student papers and dissertations. I am familiar speaking to people with accents as I volunteered at a school for international students learning English. I do my best to make learning a fun and enjoyable experience. My stepbrother was from Russia, and I helped teach him how to read. He is now an avid English communicator who no longer even has an accent. Please contact me for more information on how I can meet all your expectations of me and more!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
    • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
