My daughter has taken a few lessons with Carl, and she is very happy with his style of teaching. I hired Carl with the need to prepare my daughter for the SAT exam. Carl was extremely flexible in scheduling the tutoring sessions around my daughter’s schedule. I have enjoyed listening to Carl tutor my daughter greatly. He has a great sense of humor, and has a special method in teaching, which can just about help anyone in finding the answer and/or struggles that one is having in learning the English language properly. Each time that Carl arrives for the sessions, he is prepared and ready to tutor without wasting any time. Carl is a very knowledgeable and an experienced tutor, and I believe he has the best method in preparing for the SAT. As a bonus, he is very nice, and reasonably priced considering how much he is helping my daughter to prepare for her first life-changing exam. I would definitely use his services again, and would highly recommend him to anyone.

I worked with Antonio to help refresh my limited knowledge of Italian and he accomplished the task wonderfully. He actually expanded my understanding of how the language works and showed me some great tips for remembering how sentences can be best structured. I also had a lot of fun with him during the lessons, which is very different from my past experiences with learning a new language. He is highly professional, very friendly, and pretty much designed my lessons to be challenging but not at all hard. As a matter of fact, I have extended my lessons for another couple of months since my progress has been remarkable compared to what I expected.

Nuria Fortier was my Spanish teacher for fall 2014 through the International Language School for Children and Adults. I am an adult, beginner level spanish language student with some previous beginner coursework. Our Saturday morning one-hour classes are held at Pitzer College and ran from September through December into January. I am very impressed with Nuria's language instruction. She meets the students where he/she is in their learning, yet also helps you to challenge yourself (for example speaking as much as possible in Spanish during lesson). She stresses the importance of grammar and verb conjugation structures within conversational Spanish lesson. She constructs lessons so that we come into contact with verbs and then we address the conjugation. She recommended two very good books for beginner level that we use during the lesson, and also introduces fun story reading (at children's level which is actually very good for beginner adult learner). Nuria is very professional and reliable, and encouraging for an adult language learner! Nothing negative to report. Nuria has also created a local Spanish speaking group of current and former students who meet to practice Spanish and I am looking forward to joining this group. Thank you Nuria! I recommend ILSCA and Nuria Fortier for Spanish language. Her Children's programs are also very well attended.

Awesome teacher😀. We started out with lessons for my small children Elsa made learning so much fun for them with games and post-it's throughout the house. My children learned quickly and we fluent before they took Spanish in school. So impressed with Elsa I later hired Elsa to teach my husband and I Spanish. Elsa's approach helped us also learn quickly. We love her she is kind, patient and so much fun. I would recommend her to anyone wanting to learn Spanish. Wally P

My husband and I began our french tutoring with Roxanne a couple of weeks ago. We are thoroughly enjoying our lessons and are beginning to grasp the basics. Roxanne arrives well prepared for each lesson with engaging, informative and challenging materials and games. She tests us at the beginning of a new session, recapping on last week's homework before beginning something new. Speaking predominantly in French (other than to explain) she motivates and challenges us to really listen and follow. I would recommend her highly.

Miss Marguerite is a great piano teacher. She approaches her music lessons through a variety of techniques and methods that always keeps our daughter engaged. She teaches her music theory, music appreciation, rhythm, play by ear and the ability to read music. She differentiates the needs of each of her students and taps into their styles and preferences. Our daughter has learned a lot under her tutelage.

Adele, is a fun loving, intelligent, kind, and just all-around great tutor. We call it an Italian play date when she comes over to teach my son. He learns through play being that he’s four years old and she adapts to what he’s interested in. He loves having her come. And we enjoy her as well. We see the benefits in him as hes starting to think and speak in Italian where previously he had not. This is very exciting to see the benefits of the weekly tutoring. I would recommend Adele as a language tutor to anyone.

As a beginner in learning French, Pierre was everything I could have hoped for in a tutor. He excels in patience, expertise, and consistently keeping me on my toes with exercises and textbook materials in order to push me forward. Pierre was always on time to our sessions and never hesitated to stay over an hour to make sure I understood all of the concepts presented to me. I hope Pierre tutors in other languages because I wouldn't hesitate to sign up with him again! ...right after I master French of course!" Thank you so much for your help. -Farah Saleh

Emilio has been a great Spanish tutor during my summer living in LA! He was really flexible about location and time, and working around my work schedule. It's clear that he has experience teaching because he's able to work through the lessons in a comprehensive way while also giving in the moment feedback on pronunciation and grammar. My Spanish has seen significant improvements over the last 8 weeks. Highly recommend!

Marcelo is a native Spanish speaker, has lived in Pasadena for many years, and was an architect before he retired. He is a very pleasant person, and very easy to talk to. He is very flexible and non-dogmatic in his approach to teaching Spanish, and adapts his teaching style to his students' preferences. In our sessions we work through a Spanish language text book and do reading, writing and speaking exercises. As I have become more proficient, our lessons have focused more on conversation, which I enjoy. Among other things, Marcelo is an interesting person with a wealth of experiences, and conversations with him are always interesting. While not fluent, I have gotten to the point where I feel relatively confident in carrying on a basic conversation. Marcel is completely reliable...he never misses a scheduled session, and he is extremely punctual.

About

Hi! My name is Marion. I am French. I moved to LA for my acting career. I am fluent in English and I, myself, am still working on reducing my French accent; so I know how it works and how to learn that, step by step. I have done some design studies in school and some artistic ones (first, in applied arts in high school before my design degree, then acting, TV hosting and coaching). I have been a model for 10 years and traveled the world. I think communication is so important, and I love the idea of learning a new language and the culture, thoughts and habits that go with. I have always been very good in writing. I write and read a lot. I never do any spelling mistakes in French, and I am really good at it. I just love to see someone talk better and better in my language every day. It is motivating and a very good thing to me. I can help you achieve your goal. Marion

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
