Ruben is extremely knowledgeable about garage door installation and knows how to troubleshoot. He uses quality products that meet the client's needs and is very patient in answering all questions and working within my price, door color and installation parameters. He also gets extra credit points for listening to my neighbors who stopped by and asked questions. Some neighbors are the equivalent to armchair football fans (armchair "garage door installation" fans?)... I am extremely happy with my new garage door and operator! So far, in sharing my experience and pictures of my garage door with friends, one friend is meeting with Ruben this week!

Larry was very professional and I like the quality of his work, the value was an extra bonus. He installed outside lighting fixtures on my 3 exterior door, front door kick plate and other miscellaneous things around the house. The only reason I'm giving him 4 stars instead of 5 is due to him being late due to traffic. He will be back to remove and install a new security door. I will definitely call him again!

Very professional. Elias was prompt and texted ahead with his arrival time. I’m so glad I chose Thumbtack. To say I’m pleasures with his workmanship would be under stating it. Amazing job, he even framed out my doggie door to help support it. I supplied the 2x4 and he cut it to fit. HIRE THIS GUY, you won’t be disappointed. Thank you Elias.

I am extremely pleased with my new garage door. The entire experience was positive. When they came out for the initial quote, Crew was friendly, honest and his quoted price was within our budget. They showed up on time (a little early - which is always a plus in my book) and went right to work. When I went out to inspect the job, the person and his partner were literally wiping down the door to a perfect finish. He demonstrated the door (it's a garage door, so there isn't much - but it was still a nice touch). They did such a great job. I was impressed with the quality of the garage door. The installation is perfect. The door closes smoothly and quietly. They attention to customer service and providing quality work/material is what sets their parts. You can tell he takes pride in his work and their company. Great Garage Doors & Gates 4 Less!

Octavio was great, knowledgable, and professional, was early to our scheduled time to install my garage door opener and I was a little late. You can tell he knows his stuff. We had to improvise to install and he had no problem doing that and even went to purchase equipment from home depot that he needed. He offered all the info I needed to operate and maintain my garage to prevent damage or accidents after the install. Everything was neatly disposed of. He offered to look at another project for me on the spot which I appreciated. Thanks again. Will definitely be recommending him to anybody for garage door needs

George was responsive, diligent, paid attention to what I was looking for on the job, and worked with me on price. He put up crown molding, sealed, and painted it. He followed up afterward by filling in any separated joints/seams. He also made some custom kitchen cabinets for me that I was very satisfied with. We discussed the job and he made some good suggestions. He is easy to work with. I don't hesitate to recommend him.

Tom and his team changed our old 1940s garage door to an entirely new system with the mechanism and lifter. Everything went smoothly and efficiently: from the initial appointment to the quotation, then the final work. He was professional, punctual, and honored everything he said, including a good price. To top it off, the installation was clean and the area was tidied up upon completion. I HIGHLY recommend him and his company for any garage door project.

Monterrozo Construction definitely superseded my expectations. I needed to convert my garage into a living headquarters. Carlos explained everything I needed to know about it. He checked with the city ahead of time to make sure that I was zoned for the conversion and didn't even charge me ahead of time. He was honest and throughout about it. I would use him again.

James was great! I described what happened with our garage door on the phone and he gave me an estimate. He came out at the agreed appointment time and repaired the door quickly. He also took the time to inspect the whole system and make sure everything was working properly. He is very knowledgeable, polite and efficient. I was concerned the repair was going to be costly, but it was very reasonable! Thank you, James!

I chose SAP garage door repair even though they initially had no reviews because I needed a fast response and the ad said 24/7. So I sent at text at 10:30pm and immediately got an answer back. We set a time for the next morning and the owner of the company was right on time. Not only was he able to get my garage door fixed in a hurry, he educated me about garage door maintenance and upkeep to keep the problem from happening again. He used high quality products and gave a super good price. He even saved me money by repairing a panel on the door instead of suggesting I replace it. I usually don’t hire people with no reviews but I am so glad I took a chance this time. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this company for your garage door needs. Thanks again for the great job!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

How much does it cost to get a garage door fixed?

The national average for garage door repair cost is between $80 and $110. Some of the factors that affect your garage door repair cost are the type of springs (most often torsion or extension), the size and weight of the door, and the door material. Many garage door pros will charge a service fee to visit your house and determine the problem. Often, the service fee includes a set amount of labor. One example of this is an $80 service fee that includes the first hour of work plus testing and inspecting your garage door and garage door opener, while another pro may charge $150 for the same standard service call.

Broken or jammed springs are a common problem. In one example, the starting price for spring repair was $99, while another pro’s cost started at $185. The $185 starting price included $40 for transportation costs, $60 for parts, and $85 per hour of labor. Professionals may charge extra for late-night garage door repair emergencies.

How much is it to replace a garage door panel?

Replacing a garage door panel can add significantly to the cost of a garage door repair. Panels run horizontally on sectional roll-up garage doors. They may be made of wood, vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass or steel. Garage door panels can become damaged from hail and other extreme weather, dents and dings, car accidents, and age. When deciding if you want to replace a garage door panel, it’s helpful to compare the potential repair cost to the cost of a new garage door. Panel replacement requires a pro with the proper tools as well as the new parts. With parts and labor you could be paying more than $500 for one new panel. In comparison, a new garage door may cost $800-$1,200 (on average) with installation. If there is a possibility your garage door was structurally compromised when the panel was damaged, have the pro assess whether it’s better to completely remove and replace the door, rails and framework to ensure your home’s safety. It may also be better to completely replace your door if it is severely rusted or dented; if the paint is peeling and fading; if the door model is outdated or you can’t find replacement panels; or if the panels or rails are structurally compromised.

How much should it cost to replace a garage door cable?

If your garage door is not opening or has become jammed, you may need to replace the garage door cables. Unless you have the proper tools and know-how, this is a job best left to a professional due to the weight of the garage door and the extreme tension of the springs. The cost of repair will vary depending on your location, the length of the cables you need, and the time it takes the pro to do the replacement.

From a big-box store, basic garage door cables can run between $8 and $20, depending on the product. Your pro may charge you a different cost if they provide the cables. Your cables may not need to be replaced if they have simply come off the track, but broken cables will need to be completely removed and replaced. In either instance, the pros will need to secure or take down the door; unwind the springs; reset or replace the rollers, cables, and drums; and then wind the springs once more. For example, a pro could reset cables that have come off the track for $129.99. The average national cost for a garage door repair specialist is $80 - $110 per hour and the typical cost to replace a broken garage door cable is anywhere from $130 to $200.

How much does it cost to get a new garage door?

A new garage door can add serious curb appeal, not to mention myriad home safety benefits. The cost of a new garage door will vary based on the type of garage door you want and the materials it will be made of. You can purchase a new garage door and have the pros install it for you, but proceed with caution as many installers won’t guarantee their labor if you didn’t purchase the garage door through their company. A new door (without installation) may cost anywhere from $200 to $4,000 or more, depending on size, brand and materials. Here are some examples of average new garage door costs, including installation:

    • Raised-panel, insulated,16x7 garage door: $1,100
      • Without insulation: about $900
    • Raised-panel, insulated, 8x7: $700

    • Carriage-house 16x7 garage door with steel and faux-wood overlay: $3,500
    • Carriage-house 8x7 garage door with steel and faux-wood overlay: $2,000–$2,200
