My son needed a tutor for his freshman year college English Composition class. Before hiring Carl, I had tried a couple of tutors, but didn't find them to be competent. Carl was a very pleasant surprise; he is both very knowledgeable and engages well with my son. I like the fact that he does't merely correct him and gives him answers, but makes him think and analyse the material. He is a rare find.

Lois is a very professional and considerate tutor. She is helping my writing skill and accent. In addition, she has a producer background and share her knowledge and expertise. She teaches me the entertainment business cultures and how to be a strong female producer in US. She is not just an English teacher. She loves to motivate and inspire her students. I highly recommend her.

I really learned a lot from Daniel. He clearly knows a lot about the topics he tutors in, and knows how to explain it in a way that's easy to understand. His demeanor was calm and is very easy to talk to!

Im a student from Los Angeles Valley College who has been getting help from this company with Math and I couldn't be happier. I been working closely with Reza now for months for my Math 115 and 125 classes. This man is truly amazing and incompatible at what he does to say the least. He's one of the most patient, understanding and flexible tutors I have ever came across. He has the ability to teach Math like most can't and to motivate you to get through your biggest struggle which in this case Math happened to be mine. If it wasn't for Reza's positive attitude and constant push I would never get through my classes. If you are in anyway struggling and Math is challenging for you I would recommend for you to reach out to this man and I promise you would see unremarkable results. Beyond being and amazing Math tutor he is an amazing person. Thank your Reza for all that your help and for always believing in me.

I believe that working with a quality tutor is the best way to improve your French (unless you can be immersed in a French-speaking environment, that is!). I started with Stephanie in November 2016 and continued until I had my baby in April 2017. She is a great teacher. Lessons are enjoyable and varied, but she doesn't let you get away with poor pronunciation or mistakes! She clearly takes time to prepare for each class and tailors content to your needs and preferences. This way, you can see real progress. I was quite overwhelmed at first but gradually things begin to click and it's a great feeling. Thank you, Stef, I look forward to continuing soon!

We are pleased to write a referral for tutor extraordinaire, Mr, Chris Morris-Lent. To provide a well-rounded feedback, this referral encompasses our daughter’s experience as well as ours as parents. Mr. Morris-Lent's dedication and integrity towards helping students bring to fore the best in themselves is noteworthy. He emphasizes that the desired outcome from tutoring is a collaborative effort on the part of the student and tutor. Mr. Morris-Lent discussed the trials and triumphs of our daughter’s learning experiences, educational and career aspirations. He devised ACT/SAT tests prep program catered to our daughter's specific needs. He is approachable and timely in communicating with students; and providing progress information to the guardians/parents. This is a perk that very few, if any, ACT/SAT tutors or educational centers offer. Mr. Morris-Lent recognizes the importance of his role as a “guiding force” in influencing the educational endeavors of his students. He respects guardians/parents’ impelling positive impact in the educational voyage of their children. He is innately gifted in his ability to connect with his students and their families. The hallmark of a great tutor is the ability to connect with the student, help re-contextualize tasks into elemental areas, calibrate methods to solve the tasks, cultivate new habits (and “think outside the box”), and seek knowledge through centripetal (i.e, the desired ACT/SAT score) and centrifugal (i.e, the effect of achieving the desired score on aspirations - acceptance into the colleges of one’s choices, scholarships, etc., and considering the positive impact of one’s actions on the world)) forces. Tutoring with Morri-Lent, our daughter's test scores soared exponentially! We unequivocally recommend Mr. Morris-Lent's tutoring services to others. Best regards, The Cooks

Franco is a great tutor/teacher. He focuses more on speaking and listening and responding. If learning from a book is something you prefer he can do that as well. I've had one session so far but i was able to pin point some words people were saying to me. I do truly recommend giving him a chance if Spanish is the language you want to learn.

Adele is an amazing tutor. Her teaching methods allow me to grasp the language I’m learning much quicker. She has this way of teaching that makes it fun to learn a new language. Having someone dedicated and patient like her is the reason I chose a tutor versus a classroom setting. Since having a tutor creates a learning environment that is tailored to meet your own unique style and pace. Thank you, Adele!

We have been using Tutisto for well 2 years now and couldn't be happier with the expertise and quality of the tutors. I have two teenagers who consider their tutors friends as well as their tutor. We tried other tutoring places and did not see results until we tried Tutisto who understands not all students learn the same way.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
