I had a few Spanish lessons with Borja, how helped me to deepen my spanish knowledge. As I am living and working in Nicaragua for 6 months, for me the most important was to be able to lead conversations with locals. Therefore we spoke a lot in Spanish during our Skype session where we discussed actual experiences of travelling and the life here and he helped me to improve my descriptions. As I learned basic Spanish by myself I wanted to improve the grammar because I still have problems with the verbs. We are about to solve this problem, "poco y poco". I also got material to train and improve my Spanish by myself and we are reviewing the homework I do after each lesson every week.

Kristina is a delight to work with! As I began to plateau with self learning of Spanish, Kristina offered a lot of experience in language learning. She balances her curriculum well with coaching, tools/resources, and conversation, which aim to provide an immersive language-learning experience. She also facilitates an environment that is both professional and fun. And I can't complain about her hourly rate. Thanks Kristina!

I took Spanish for 3 years in high school, kept studying on my own for another 5 or 6 years, and considered myself an intermediate-level student. At some point, I realized that my grammar was somewhat decent, but my ability to actually communicate in the language was very limited (to say the least), so I decided to go ahead and find some help. I tried a couple of other tutors before Marc. They were OK, but - plain and simple - I got kind of bored... And then I found Marc! He can converse about movies, travels, music, History, Philosophy, social issues... All the while listening to my use of the language, and pausing to give notes, corrections, and suggestions. In addition, he'll often email me with some notes, links, or further explanations about any grammar issues that we may have encountered in our last session, as well as recommend Spanish movies, podcasts, or articles. Marc has true love for the Spanish language, a very warm character, and real commitment to his students. I totally recommend him to anyone looking to take their Spanish to the next level!

Katia was prompt, prepared and always positive. Our student is not exactly happy about learning but he was always willing to go to his Spanish lesson. He connected well with Katia and respected all the teaching angles she used to help him. Highly recommended.

I took Italian lessons from Daniela for about 6 months and liked her very much as a teacher. She is patient, speaks Italian very clearly, and taught me useful everyday expressions as well as helping me with pronunciation and grammar.. She has a good sense of humor and I enjoyed our lessons.

As someone who is very busy and didn't have a large window to add French lessons into my life, Sophie was there to work around my time schedule and needs and was quick to assess where my previous language skills could be foundational to learning French. With only two hour-long lessons a week, I was able to start reading novels after one year. After two years, I was able to start having business negotiations with my clients in France who were incredibly impressed with my progress. After three years, I was going to the movies by myself in Paris, understanding full dialogues with the use of subtitles. Sophie is an absolute professional with a unique understanding of the skills and lessons that suite the individual learner. I can't recommend her highly enough for anyone interested in learning French, at any level, and for any purpose. I started for business reasons, but at this point I'm entranced by the beauty of the culture and keeping up with friends I've made as a result of my new access into France.

I had a fantastic experience with IDESLI. I logged on to Thumbtack one morning to find a Spanish tutor. I needed help brushing up on my speaking skills for a new job. Literally within an hour, I was corresponding with IDESLI, and they were pairing me with a classes package and a program that was a perfect fit for my needs. I started classes the following day! IDESLI was professional, friendly, and did I mention well-located? Right in the heart of the Financial District. I worked with Carolina, who knew that the most important thing for me was to talk a lot in Spanish, so we had some great conversations, and she helped me throughout with learning lingo, colloquial terms, etc. She also gave me some more formal homework on remembering verb conjugation and vocabulary that was specifically relevant to my field. I hope to continue participating in the IDESLI community by attending some of their upcoming Spanish movie nights. :)

I contacted Argentina BIlinguals because my parents have decided to retire in Mexico. They have been living there for about 3 years now and since I visit 1-2 times a year I want to become fluent in the Spanish language. I would like to be able to talk to doctors or housekeeps if needed and also not have any trouble when I am at the local market. After studying with Argentina Bilinguals for over 6 months I feel very confident and have grown in the Spanish language. I can now speak comfortably and hold a conversation without feeling lost or confused. The attention from Argentina Bilinguals is lovely, very engaging and enjoyable. I highly recommend this program for any traveler that is looking to enjoy connecting with new and exciting cultures. Effective communication is very important and I am pleased to say that I can now communicate effectively thanks to Argentina Bilinguals. Cathy

Lina is an absolutely fantastic tutor. I have had Spanish lessons and tutorials on and off for the past 15 years and she stands out as exceptional. She is very open and flexible to adapting the tutorials to whatever you would like to study/discuss and suits you best (which contrasts somewhat to a few previous Spanish tutors I have had in the past, who forced me to learn things I had already learned previously). Her enthusiasm and encouragement are second to none, and her many years of teaching are very clear. Having taught many students in private tutoring for maths and science myself, I was certainly inspired by her teaching methods. Her tutorials are a joy, and even after only a few lessons I am already a lot more confident in my speaking and listening skills. Thank you Lina!

Rafael is my Spanish Tutor. He is amazing! I feel very fortunate to have met Rafael. It was very important to me to find a tutor who was educated to teach Spanish. His passion, experience and education with the Spanish language is obvious when you speak to him. Rafael is patient, reliable, intelligent, flexible, generous, and funny. He teaches at my pace, he doesn't rush me and he makes learning fun. He provides me with the materials I need to learn, gives me homework, and always responds to my emails, texts, and questions. Some of the tools we use are a text book, a simple writing pad, online tutorials, videos, excercises, and quizzes. Rafael is a gem and I feel to fortunate to have found him. I'm finally learning some of the more challenging things that I've struggled with in past Spanish classes.

Because I am going to Spain shortly, I wanted help with my conversational Spanish. Sylvia was just the ticket! She came to my house (on time) and provide me just what I needed and wanted. I find one of the key things one needs to develop one's conversation is something/someone you enjoy conversing with. Because Sylvia is such an interesting, well and broadly educated person, there was never any problem--except for the lesson ending too soon. It was both a pleasure and a great learning experience. I highly recommend her. AK

Roslyn Raney has worked for the One-to-One Tutoring Service since 2004. She has tutored many students in French, German, and Spanish for our service very successfully. Adults who want to learn a language for travel purposes have been particularly impressed with her ability to teach them what they need to know to be able to converse successfully in the country they are traveling to. She also has tutored numerous high school students as well. I have received many positive comments from clients who worked with Roslyn. She came to our service having taught languages at the college level for a number of years at San Jose State and College of San Mateo.

Ms. Zepeda has been tutoring my homeschooled 4th grade son in Spanish. He is very bright but new to the language, and really needed a sharp, encouraging, supportive instructor to help him along. Raquel has been such a wonderful blessing. Warm, patient, intelligent, dependable, and professional--she's been fantastic for our child. He is learning a lot and is excited about the process, due in no small amount to her fun and savvy guidance. He really looks forward to lessons with her! I would highly recommend you see if she is a match for your family, as well.

Great explanations and friendly atmosphere! Spanish was so confusing to me, but with Galina's help everything became very simple and clear! I was about to drop my university Spanish class, but now I'm in love with this language! Thank you very much!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
