What is a good age to start vocal lessons?

If you’re thinking about signing up your child for voice lessons, keep in mind that some instructors recommend waiting until their voice settles after puberty. Talk to voice coaches near you to find out if now's the time for you (or your child) to start taking lessons.

What are singing lessons like?

Every voice coach may have a different style of teaching, but here are a few things you'll likely experience during a singing lesson:

  • Explaining to the instructor what you want to improve on.
  • Going through a few breathing and riff exercises.
  • Receiving constructive feedback and criticism from the instructor.

Before your first voice lesson, you can ask your instructor what you should expect and how to prepare.

Where can you get singing lessons?

You can receive singing lessons from a vocal instructor or voice coach on Thumbtack. Some instructors offer virtual lessons, while others may require you to come into a studio for instruction.

How many singing lessons do I need?

I’ve been singing now for just over 20 years, working with different instructors from my high school chorus teachers, to my voice instructor in college to vocal lessons by CD. NONE have been able to get the best out of me like Liz has. Her understanding of how different voices work is the greatest strength every vocal instructor should strive for. In just two sessions with her, I feel and hear a vast improvement in how my voice sounded before her and after her. So to anyone who’s looking for an instructor who works with YOU and not someone who teaches the same lessons to everyone they work with, Liz Patterson is the one you want to work with! UPDATE: WOW! It's going on 2 years now, and the amount of improvement and development I have gained as a singer through Liz is AMAZING. The main trait she gave me through her teaching prowess is confidence. These days, there's no song I feel I can't tackle. And it's all thanks to Liz's instructions. I can't wait to get back into lessons in 2020. Thank you for everything, Liz!

I've had 2 lessons with Melinda so far and I can already see some improvements in how I breathe, how comfortable I am with my voice, and even extending my range! Melinda is an excellent teacher that knows the ins and outs of teaching how to sing naturally and properly. And she gives exercises for us to practice at home as well.

Liz is the best!! I’ve had some vocal lessons before and Liz is definitively the best instructor I’ve ever had. She works with my voice and really focuses on the fundamentals, which helps me get rid of the bad habits that I’ve built over the years of singing in the wrong way. Once the fundamentals are right, it became so much easier to hit the notes with clarity and stability. I love how she spend time to understand my own strengths and weaknesses, and not just trying to make me sing like everyone else. She picks the songs that work for my voice, are interesting and challenging. I love taking Liz’s classes!

Ross Halper has been my singing teacher for several years now. Following his instruction, has developed and expanded my voice in ways that were unexpected , and the discovery process was very positive. My range has expanded , both high and low , and I am now learning classical operatic and broadway repertoire that was unimaginable just a few years ago. His lessons continue to advance and reveal a bigger , better and more consistent tone in my singing voice. I definitely recommend R.H. as a singing teacher. I also recommend him as a vocal coach for advanced singers , who would benefit greatly from his tailored advice, to advance to the next level. Thanks Ross, John Ilyin
