Derek arrived on time and was polite and focused on the task. He diagnosed the loud rattle / vibration we have in an HVAC vent -- determined the heater is otherwise working fine -- but wasn't able to eliminate the noise. Our vent cover is atypical (will require brute force removal, followed by repair/painting.) He recommended we hire a "handyman" who will have the tools to reach far into the vent to solve the problem. We were not charged for Derek's visit.

It got hot late last week and so on Saturday (04/29/17) I turned on my AC after the long rainy season and guess what my AC didn't want to function. the fan wasn't working and I tried youtube to see if I can figure it out myself and that didn't go no where. At this time decided I need to go with the pro. started my Yelp reviews and calling my friends. on of my friends mentioned to me about Thumbtack. I went into Thumbtack and requested a quote for my AC repair. I got quote from a dozen contractors from $0 to $72 diagnostic cost. Kevin from East Bay Heating & Air was one among them. Kevin is the owner of the East Bay Heating & Air services and employees a team of 7. I was trying to get someone to come take a look at it on Sunday knowing that the coming days are going to be super hot. Kevin was the only person who decided to come over and take a look at it on Sunday. Kevin was very professional, polite, respectful, communicative, and took the time to explain what is going on with my unit. He also took the time to check my Nest device, AHU, and heater to make sure there is no issue in any of the device. Kevin quickly diagnosed that the motor fan is busted and took picture of the model of the motor. As he was looking at this he also diagnosed for other problems, he identified the disconnect switch was also busted and was not doing its job of cutting power to the AC unit (a major safety issue). Kevin took note of that and turned off the breaker at the main control panel for safety reasons. Once the issue in hand was identified and action plan was established, I started discussing with Kevin options to replace the entire heating & AC unit in my home. he took his time to explain to me all the brands out there, SEER ratings, single stage to double stage etc. Kevin was not rushing or in all of this didn't attempt to sell me anything. no pressure which was great. I requested a quote for replacing the entire system and Kevin quickly assembled a quote and emailed me on the same day. He also promptly replied to all my queries, remember this is all happening on a Sunday. later on that day I decided not to proceed with the whole replacement project even though Kevin's estimate was reasonable since I just did other improvement projects at my home and didn't want undertake this project at this time. When I got back to Kevin on this he was professional and agreed with me that this is the right thing to do. Kevin reaffirmed that he his going to procure the fan motor part and the disconnect switch. Once getting the parts will be at my home on Monday and take care of this work order. On Monday morning he promptly followed up with a call at 10:00am and confirmed that I wanted the motor to be replaced before he bough the parts. At 12pm he was at my home making the repair and as he did it he also cleaned my AC unit. Installed the new disconnect switch and included a compressor saver kit as my AC unit was from 90s. Kevin work was of good quality, prompt, and professional with his service. I will be recommending him to my friends for sure.

Dave and his team went way above and beyond anything I expected. “Normal” contractors have been hit or miss on this service. Dave and Heavenly stepped up and stayed after hours just setting up my service appointment for an emergency HVAC repair. I never write reviews, and have a strict standard when dealing with people. However, the service they provided compelled me to let everyone know what a great company this is, and how much they are willing to help.

I was able to get an next day appointment at the time I needed. Phillip came out and checked my HVAC system from top to bottom, have me great information on how to keep my house cool in the summer while keeping my bills low and what a huge difference, my summer bill is lower than it has ever been. He explained how to keep my older model running efficiently and I know his company will be the one I will go to for service, repairs and when it comes time, a replacement. I feel like he was honest and trustworthy. I have and would recommend him to my friends and family for any and all HVAC work! I wish all companies could be counted on like this one. Sheri J.

Superb service by Tim and his crew. Their estimate was fairly priced. The write up for parts and labor was the most detailed invoice I've ever seen. Right down to the dimensions of the tubing. No other contractors do that. Because of their attention to detail and fair price I hired them. They installed a new coil, furnace, and compressor in one day. They even rolled down paper to protect my new floors and wore shoe covers when walking around the house. They're efficient, professional, courteous, and on time. Thanks Tim and IRBIS crew. I highly recommend these guys

David called a few minutes prior to the scheduled arrival time as a reminder which I truly appreciate of any contractor. He did a walk through of the house inspecting the ventilators, AC & furnace and explained the process as this was my first time getting the ducts cleaned. David was very efficient and effective though the whole process. Double thumbs up!

Domenick has been at my house the past three weekends working on my ducts under my house. One of the days he nearly worked 12 hours non stop. I was very impressed by the quality of his work. My HVAC system is now running in better shape then it ever has. He also pointed out a few problems with other projects under my house I was so impressed with his work on my ducts I hired him to repair those as well. To tell you the truth I almost wish I had more work for him so I knew that everything would get done quickly and correctly. Btw he was also the lowest quote I got from over 10 companies for my project. I know I will use him again if I need any other work.

Our 35+ year old furnace bit the dust & decided to bid out for a furnace plus AC. After multiple bids, we decided to go with Freedom Heating & AC. We liked the way Jared explained the old HVAC system & comparing it to the benefits of a new system. We were able to schedule the job quickly & planned for a two day install. One day for DEMO & one day for install. So glad went went with Freedom, Jared, Jeff & Brad were really nice guys who take pride in their craft. We have a young child so they tried to keep noise to a minimum. We’re glad we went with AC unit too because it keeps the house nice and cool during this summer heat. Our new thermostat is nice and high tech & the filtration system really cleans out the air well. For a job well done, we received great price & high quality install & a really nice furnace & AC system. Freedom heating and AC are highly recommend by our family. Thank you!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

    • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
    • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
    • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
    • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
      • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
    • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
      • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
    • Your home has humidity problems.
    • Your home has excessive dust.
      • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
    • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
      • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
    • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
      • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
