During our search for a DJ/MC, we were offered varying rates in our quote and some DJs have been less than professional and close to being condescending and demeaning. We were so happy to have found Sylvan via Thumbtack for our reception event. He was easy to work with and very flexible with last minute changes. He considered our song requests, and worked well with us on the Chinese/English introductions of the family. His playlist worked our crowd up and it was so lively! Really appreciate his work and it was a pleasure to work with him. He stayed professional throughout our interactions and the event. His presentation style was down-to-earth and easy going, which was what we wanted. He also provides projector/screen rental and played our video for us during the event. He offered one of the best and reasonable prices and rates. I will recommend him to many others who are looking for a great host/DJ!

We needed 4 videos produced and shot for our organization. Jeff came in at the beginning and collaborated with us on our final product. We have an ongoing relationship with him and will continue to work with him for the foreseeable future. So far we have used his company not only for video but for photography as well. His attention to detail, eye for photography and his design-eye are impeccable.

We had Luke for our son’s first birthday party .It was a big party of approx 150 people . He made sure he covered each aspect of the party , from decor to food to people and dance . Clicked pictures with all guests . He also made a very nice highlight video of the party with snippets , it came out real nice. The pictures turned out good and he was quick to send them back after editing ... I really enjoyed working with Luke . Best part - he always responded immideately to all questions / texts and calls so there was a good communication . Highly recommended

Keida was amazing to work with! He was very accommodating from the get go and we couldn’t be more happier with the outcome of his work. In our package, not only did he included the cool feature of a drone footage in our video but he was also able to capture every part of our wedding in multiple angles using one man’s power. We loved his work and is very thankful that he took the time to thoroughly put all then pieces together in our video. We truly would recommend him as a professional videographer for your wedding! Respectfully, The Kimotos

We hired My Big Day Videos 2months before our wedding, she's been so accommodated so well to us, she update us and been so patient to my request. I met her the day of the wedding and I am so pleased to work with her. She is so nice and really did a good job for our wedding videos. She also had our videos edited in just 3days after the wedding. Thank You Pascale for providing video for our wedding.

This is a review for video footage only. I loved my experience with Damian! He was very friendly, attentive to details, worked well with my photographer, punctual and was not at all a distraction to my big day. He & his team were amazing at being discrete in getting their footage! He got the shots he needed & reassured me that the footage he got was more than enough he needed to make a good film! I can't wait to see our film & the magic that Damian & team caught on our big day!

Milestone Cinematography's portfolio caught my attention when I was first viewing quotes for videographers on Thumbtack. I particularly appreciated the seamless stitching of elements to create a beautiful narrative of day. When my fiance (now husband!) and I first spoke to Ray on the phone, he immediately won us over with his laid back and candid demeanor and passion. We felt like he was a good fit for us as a couple personality-wise. We also appreciated that there was no time limit regardless of what package we chose. We ended up going with the Highlight Film package. After contracts were signed, Ray continued to be very responsive in the days leading up to the event. During the day, Ray and his team were very professional and pleasant to work with. As the day progressed, I almost forgot there were cameras around me. Ray also had a very quick turnaround for videos. After a week past our wedding, we received a highlight video. And after two weeks, we received the rest of our package. Overall - I would highly recommend Ray and his team to capture your event. They produce high-quality work with affordable price options. Ray has been an absolute pleasure to work with.

Mauricio was amazing every step of the process. He worked with us to set up a last minute appointment. He arrived early and scouted out a good location with beautiful morning light for our professional profile shoot. He reviewed the style of our business website to ensure a cohesive artistic look with the images we were already using. Mauricio made everyone feel comfortable so that our pictures were engaging and personal instead of stiff and formal. I will definitely use Goodfolk Film Co. for my future photo/video needs.

My husband and I hired Ryan last minute for our wedding because we knew we would regret not having video footage of our special day. And boy, were we happy we did! He went above and beyond for us, syncing music and interviews, giving us different cuts and versions, and a sweet little gift box with with treats and a flash drive of it all. We, and our family members, are still watching it over and over, and will cherish it forever. Thanks SmartFlight Studios! You have a bright future!

Phase 1 was to take the video footage. Arnell exceeded all expectations by contacting the venue and then helping rent some auxiliary equipment that the venue had mistakenly led me to believe existed. He also brought some music that all participants enjoyed. He arrived early at the event to set up his equipment. During the event, he seemed to be everywhere he needed to be and unobtrusively made sure that critical portions of the event were video'd. So part one has been superbly carried out; we are looking forward to part two: editing of the footage.

From the very start I knew I was lucky to have found Nick to create the video of my wedding. It’s so clearly evident how much he cares about the quality and dependability of his work/art. He loves what he does and is so talented. He’s very respectful and listened to all the small details of what I wanted captured. Thanks for making our wedding video dreams come true!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
