We were very impressed with Raquel and her training. We were at our wits end with our 8 month old lab Molly. Despite her having attended 2 group dog training courses at our local pet store, she was out of control. She had taken over our household and was creating discord by her bad behavior for all who reside here, including our 6 year old lab and our cat. Raquel worked with our family, gave us knowledge and skills on how to work with Molly to regain control of our home. Her training encompassed the whole family as we all had our own way of dealing with Molly's behavior. Molly was truly a different dog at the end of our intensive training. We know we still have much work to do but we are encouraged that we now have the skill to continue and the support and encouragement from Raquel.

We have our first puppy and we were struggling with many dog training issues (integration with two adult cats, potty training, biting, barking - the works!) and Karen was a great partner in helping us communicate better with our puppy and achieve great results. She is knowledgeable, passionate, and eager to make a difference.

Somehow reading a book with common-sense dog training tips did not give us confidence. Dee Cee shows you these methods & how they work--but it is up to you to do it over and over till you and your dog get it. Our dog did not have hard issues so were were looking for guidance more than a trainer that would come multiple times. Dee Cee showed us insider tips and all the details..demonstrating with our dog... to give us methods & confidence. She left 2 tools to use as we will continue to work with our dog. We wanted an hour private session in our home to target 3 simple issues and Dee Cee was just what we needed.

John is one of the best dog trainers that I've met. I have a three year old recently adopted American Eskimo with issues such as leash pulling, nipping people who doesn't give him attention, and general insecurity issues. I have seen other dog trainers trying to get help, but without result. John took the time to get to know my dog and evaluate him based on what he saw and previous conversations with me. He helped me understand my dog and what I need to do to help him. Apparently, I have a dog that thinks he's an alpha and he taught me how to address this. I need more classes to address my dogs leash pulling and more, and I am glad that John didn't try to address all issues in one session because I don't think that would have been very helpful in the long run. Training a dog is not done in an hour, it takes more time than that. I highly recommend John.

Duane is an exceptional trainer. We highly recommend him. We have a large high energy dog and we needed lots of help. Duane was awesome in training our dog and teaching us how to properly train him. Our dog is always so happy when Duane comes to work with him! Duane is always there to help with follow up questions.. We are very pleased with the results and appreciate Duane. We did lots of research to find Duane and the improvements in our dog confirm he is "the best." Rich and Leslie

Stefanie has trained 4 of my dogs over more than 10 years and I cannot sing her praises enough! She has true compassion for all animals and has rescued and found homes for countless number of dogs. She has a real gift of "talking" to the dogs -- she can read their personalities and they bond with her. She is experienced, professional, strict but kind and understands all breeds -- purebreds and mixed. She assesses the situation, background, needs, etc. of the owner/s as well as the dog and adjusts her training method accordingly. Above and beyond her dog training skills, Stefanie is a warm, principled, caring person. I consider her a friend as much as my dogs' trainer.

So I live in Alabama and have a friend in Tn. that had bought a dog from Vince. The dog was one of the best working dogs I have seen. The dog was the perfect balance of work and home. I reached out to Vince with some questions about a dog I had just bought. Being that I don't have the time to take off of work and fly out to California with my dog and train with him, Vince never once hesitated to answer my questions. I kept him up to date on my training and I hit a wall, I had a few problems I couldn't seem to work out. Vince offered very precise training advise and even went so far as to ask me for a few videos and then sent me some videos of the training I could use to show me exactly what I could do to accomplish my goals. Nobody else would have done that, nobody else would have cared. Vince truly cares about dogs and wants to make sure that you and your dog have the best relationship and quality of life possible. I am actively trying to find a way to get me and my dog to him so I can train with him and thank him in person for all that he has done for me. It's never hard to discern when someone is doing it because they love what they do or if they are doing it because they love them money it brings. I can assure you Vince is in it because he loves dogs and he loves what he does. Truly one of the best people I have met in the dog training industry. Thanks again Vince for everything you have done for a know nothing beginner like me.

Dave was such a great help to us in training our dog (or us, really)! He really took the time to explain the process and work with Sadie to overcome her fearful reaction to other dogs. She's made great progress & we look forward to more training sessions in the future. Highly recommended! Oh, and Sadie absolutely LOVES HIM.

We are very excited to get going on training our dog with Dave. He came to our house on Saturday, and spent over an hour discussing our dogs needs, and Dave's philosophy on training. (Free consultation) We were very impressed, and feel that he will be a great fit for our family.

We rescued our cocker mix June 2015.By mid-August, he had bitten 4 people inside our home. He also barked incessantly at the mailman, the gardener or whoever came to our front door. We needed a trainer who could come to our home because since the dog bit those 4 people, we had not had any friends or family to our home for visits. Julie came and explained the different tools she uses for training. I always felt prong collars were cruel. Julie showed me how wrong I was. I now use the prong collar and realize that it is not a cruel way of training. Julie is patient, kind and very knowledgeable about dogs and their behaviors. She has shown me how to train and correct my dog. In 5 sessions, my dog no longer barks incessantly, he no longer wants to attack cats we encounter on our walks. He no longer lunges nor snarls at dogs we encounter on our walks. He can get close to other dogs and no longer feels threatened nor feels the need to “protect” me. He also did very well at the dogpark. He had never gone anywhere unleased. I am very happy I chose Julie as our trainer because I now feel very confident that my dog is well behaved on our walks when we meet people and dogs. I highly recommend Julie because I got fast results with her methods of training and my dog fell in love with her.

Denise loves dogs and understands them deeply. She also loves people. Denise is patient, kind, generous, and elegant. She tailors her instruction to suit the individuality of the dog, his or her guardian, and the bond between them. Denise taught me ways of working with Carl that were fun for him and comfortable for me, and the results have been extraordinary. I believe that one day Denise Mange will be ranked with Turid Rugass, Patricia McConnell, and Ian Dunbar as one of the greatest dog trainers in the world.

All aspects of Paw by Paw is amazing. Ayeumi is so kind, patient and understanding of the dogs that she is training. She got our dog as a baby and then he went back 8 months later and a 100 lbs heavier. Her training of both the dog and owner is superb as well as her assistance when needed. I would recommend her absolutely and proudly.

I have been training with The Driven Dog for over a year and a half now and me and my dog have both come a very long way since we started. Karin always helps me find new, different and fun ways of working with my dog. She is always there to answer any questions I have and help me through whatever I am having trouble working on. My dog was very hard to handle and deal with when I started training but now the bond and trust I have with him through training with Karin is night and day. I would highly highly recommend The Driven Dog training to anyone!

LeNai is a professional through and through and knows dogs amazingly well and can handle every size of dog. Walking, training, playing - she is a pro! But what really makes the difference for me, is that she is treating your dog like it is her own. She gives my Sasha so much love and helps her overcome her separation anxiety. She gives updates every day, and I can 100% rely on her. When I go on my trips, I have 100% peace of mind leaving my dog with LeNai.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
