Patrick and his team were reliable, super helpful and thorough. They rolled with the changes of the day as is typical with a move. (we had rain, they took apart and put together furniture and helped with clean up stuff too.) I would call on Patrick again and again for moving and random tasks at home or office. He worked hard and I am so grateful to him for his help!

Albert transferred about 15 home videos (VHS, 8mm, and DVD) to digital files. He was very responsive to all of my communications, and the quality of work was excellent. I know that it was hard to get a few of my tapes to even work, but he was able to transfer all of them. I also did the project remotely. I sent him the tapes and he sent them back to me, so there was an added element of convenience.

I needed help for a last minute job taking down a rabbit hutch and chicken coop that had been sitting on the property for 6 years. Harp was quick to respond and came out the next morning to help me meet a deadline for a very important inspection. He got everything done on time and was a pleasure to work with. I have an in home preschool, and he didn’t mind the kids watching from a distance. Will definitely hire again!

Jeff is professional, meticulous, puntual, smart, pleasant and most importantly an excellent TV mounter! We presented him with a tricky task of mounting a 75" TV in a section of a built-in unit with very little clearance. Jeff was up for the challenge and despite a number of unexpected challenges (i.e., electrical outlet in exactly the wrong spot), Jeff completed the job easily and without frustration. I HIGHLY recommend hiring Jeff for your home theater needs. We plan to use him again to optimize our computer/home network as well. Money very well spent!!

Michael was awesome and came to install 6 ceiling light fans. Our home was prewired in each room and we bought fans/lights from home depot. Michael and his coworker showed up promptly on time and they were here for 5 hours working continuously. They tested all the switches to ensure that everything was working correctly. I was thoroughly impressed by his professionalism and efficiency. I would highly recommend him again in the future and we plan to use him too again. Thanks!

For all of your handywork needs,Chaojun is your man. The BEST and most prompt service I've ever experienced - efficient from start to finish, and clever with finding creative work-around solutions to assembly or repair services where most others would give up. He even helped me put up my Christmas decor, which was above and beyond the requested service. Very trustworthy (enough so to have him work on projects even when I'm not at home), and he will offer realistic advice and consultation if something else needs to be purchased in order to complete your project. I hired him for a large interior re-design project that included complex assembly, mounting, and light electrical work. Would refer him to friends and colleagues without hesitation!

Bogdan was a gift. He and his team installed ~2000 SQft of Bamboo Hardwood floors, a marble entry way, tile floor in the laundry room and bath, built a tile shower from scratch, matched and installed granite in a half bath and full guest bath, and repaired several small but important plumbing issues along the way. Bogdan was respectful and considerate of our priorities. He worked with us with patience, always checking in to make sure we were happy with the choices and installation. For example, he was able to create a seamless transition between the tile and hardwood and marble that made a big difference in how the flooring flows- no tripping on t-moulding ! I would happily recommend Bogdan for home improvement projects.

Richard Hynes is a very detailed professional. Upon meeting Richard I felt comfortable about the project. We originally wanted to order materials for the project and he had suggested to me that he would order any materials and provide us with the receipts. Luckily we let him order the material as it turns out the ones we wanted to order were undersized for our project. Richard came and seismically retrofitted our home. He also helped us on our kitchen and bathroom remodels while managing the project the whole way, hiring subs, coordinating between myself and subcontractors and achieving the results desired. Richards pricing was 20% cheaper compared to licensed professionals in the area. We are so glad to have had his help, as the previous worker we hired from thumbtack turned out to be unlicensed at a cheaper price, but ended up costing us a lot more money in the long run.

Kris is personable, honest and friendly. He will never exceed his brief without first referring to his customer, and his advice is always based on what is best for the customer's pocket, not his. His workers are skilled, happy, and hard-working. It's a pleasure, always, to have his team work on my home.

Andrew was thorough and prompt. He recommended and installed ceiling speakers; fixed a bunch of patch holes that a previous contractor neglected to patch; recommended and acquired paints and materials. When a job was out of his comfortable skill set he let us know. As an aside, he looks a little older then his profile picture, which was a little offsetting at first. That said with age comes experience, and he has a wealth of skills and the right attitude. I would definitely recommend working with him again, and will be running future projects by him as well.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who wall mounts TVs?

Electricians, handymen and TV installation specialists may all provide television mounting services. The person who does the mounting should be qualified and knowledgeable about basic construction concepts as well as working with audiovisual cables. In general, no specialized certificates are required to provide television mounting services, but as always do your diligence and make smart hiring decisions.

It’s important to find an experienced professional who will ensure the TV wall mount meets building code. Most regions have fire codes that don’t permit high-voltage power cords behind walls (low-voltage wires like HDMI and video cables are generally acceptable). A basic wall mount on drywall may take approximately one to two hours, while more complex mounts on brick or stone with hidden cables can take three or more hours. If you need more electrical outlets installed near your entertainment system, you may want to hire an electrician. Check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to mount a TV?

Elevate your home style with television mounting services. The national average price for television mounting services ranges between $100 and $130. Factors that can affect cost are the material of the wall you want the TV mounted on, whether you want the wires hidden, and any additional entertainment system connection you desire. It probably costs more to mount a TV on brick, stone or concrete than on drywall or plaster due to the added labor required to drill holes. For example, a company may charge an additional $99 to mount a TV on a brick wall. Here are some examples of average costs for television mounting services:

  • Basic TV wall mount: $40. Does not include bracket, device connection or strip management.
  • TV wall mount: $119. Includes bracket, mounting services, strip management system (for concealing external wires), and connection of all entertainment devices.
  • TV wall mount with wires hidden inside wall: $139.
  • Installation of additional electrical outlet: $65.
  • TV wall mount over fireplace with wires hidden: $179-$249.
  • TV wall mount and up to 5 speakers wall-mounted with hidden wires: $399.

How much does it cost for surround sound installation?

If you’re installing your dream home theater, you want the perfect sound system to round it out. The cost for surround sound installation will vary based on the speaker system you select, the amount of wiring and prep required for the job, and labor rates in your region. Home theater installation specialists can advise on the best surround sound speakers for your space and the technology you are using. Here are some examples of average home theater installation costs and the cost of surround sound speakers:

  • TV wall mount and up to 5 wall-mounted speakers with hidden wires: $399.
  • 60-inch TV and small home system: $2,080.
    • Equipment cost: $1,680.
      • Five box speakers and subwoofer: $500.
      • Three HDMI wires: $30.
      • Surround amp: $250.
      • 60-inch TV and bracket: $900.
      • Labor cost: $400 Including setup, wiring and TV mounting.
  • Projector and screen system plus audio wiring throughout home: $12,900.
    • Equipment cost: $9,900.
      • Approximate wire costs: $2,700.
      • Projector and bracket: $1,500.
      • 110-inch screen: $600.
      • Surround amp: $500.
      • 5-inch ceiling speakers and sub: $1,400.
      • Remote control system: $400.
      • Eight zones of speakers and volume controls: $2,800 ($350 each)
      • Labor cost: $3,000. Includes prewiring for 5-inch ceiling speakers, one subwoofer, one 20-inch to 50-inch HDMI, Cat. 6 control wire to projector, 1.5-inch tube for future wire changes, and wiring for two to eight additional audio zones throughout the home. All equipment (audio boxes, amps, cable box, etc.) is concealed. The audio zones are controllable by iOS devices from anywhere in the home.

Can a TV be mounted above a fireplace?

You may be able to mount your flat screen TV above your fireplace for a more streamlined look in your living room. In fact, TV mounting professionals can hang your flat screen TV flush with a wall or from a tilting or full-motion bracket mount in any room in your home. A tilting or full-motion mount may be the best option above a fireplace so you can tilt the TV down for the best viewing angle. Whether the wall above your fireplace is brick, drywall, concrete, stone or plaster, most television mounting services can accommodate your needs. Hardier wall surfaces like concrete or brick will require more labor and expertise to mount, and will likely have a higher price range.

If you want your AV and cable wires hidden in the wall, you will also pay a higher price due to the added time and skill to properly drill the holes and run wires. Before mounting your TV above your fireplace, consult with the manufacturer about necessary distance from heat sources. If the space above your fireplace gets too warm, another location could be better for the longevity of your TV. Your television mounting services may take between one and two hours, or more depending on your home theater setup.
