I started with Dr. Cummings right on time, which was impressive considering I'd only made the appointment two days before. The office was nice and professional while the session was relaxing and thought provoking.

I have worked with Dinndayal in various capacities: 1) Personal: Yoga Teacher training and 2) Professional: contractor to provide classes and counseling for staff and students at Napa Valley Adult Education where I am Principal. Dinndayal relates to individuals and groups in a personable and engaging way. His depth, understanding and insights provide a solid base from which he teaches in groups and on an individual basis. He works from a place of respect and integrity. He has been reliable and prompt in arriving for classes and meetings despite a one-hour commute. I highly recommend Dinndayal for individual and group trainings and classes.

Found the site user-friendly. Was very happy to be contacted by 2 professionals pretty quickly after my request. Found Dr. Spring to be very well-qualified and his willingness to work with our schedule and get us in asap! Our marriage is in an extremely fragile state, and after meeting with Dr. Spring for 50 minutes, we seemed to be able to get back on track and get to the nitty-gritty of our core issues. So far, have had 2 sessions, and we are very pleased with the quality of the professionals, with Dr. Spring, and with our progress in our relationship. Thank you!!

Liese was my personal trainer/Pilates instructor for 3 years and I can't say enough good things about her. I really needed someone to motivate and push me. Liese makes working out fun and the time flies. She always came to our appointments prepared with a thoughtful series of exercises that were geared towards my body and personal goals. I've trained with a lot of different people and I love that Liese has taught people of different ages and body types and with different needs. She has a range of experience and ideas and her clients benefit from it. Last but not least, she is fun, funny, and someone you'd want to get a drink with. After the workout, that is!

Nancy helped my siblings and I support our aging mother who had been suffering for quite some time with deep depression and anxiety. She established a sense of trust with our mom using kindness, genuine deep listening and she helped to normalize some of what our mom was experiencing. Nancy has not only been skillful and kind with our mom but has, when we have asked, met with us as a family to help us better understand what our mom is going through and how we can best support her and take care of ourselves as well. Nancy offered very practical suggestions too, based on her many years of experience working with middle aged and older people and their families. She advocated with medical professionals to bring an effective team together and has helped us hone our communication skills with them and with each other. I highly recommend her for both counseling and consulting how to navigate these territories of older age with consciousness, hope and peace.

Thanks to Ardyth's insightful coaching skills, my partner and I left our appointments with concrete things to do...and not do...to improve our relationship. She also taught us an EFT technique that measurably brought down our stress levels. It was magic. Thanks, Ardyth!

    About

Our thoughts create our feelings! Our feelings create our urges! Our urges create our actions! Our actions create our life! We each arrive here whole, perfect, complete. Somewhere along our journey, we get caught up in the events of our story and the soup of societal thought; we fall into the illusion that we have somehow become less perfect, less valuable, less capable and less loveable, or that we got stuck in traffic and weren’t at the port when our ship came in. We find ourselves with any number of unwanted conditions of dis-ease in our lives, wondering what the heck happened. There is hope! There is a solution! By identifying our hidden beliefs and replacing them with the spiritual truth about ourselves, we release the illusions. We are healed, and our lives are transformed. It is my great pleasure to give you the tools, the guidance and the support you need to transform your thinking and to claim your birthright of unlimited abundance in every area of your life. Spiritual counseling differs from traditional counseling or psychotherapy, in that the primary focus is on the here and now versus the past. I work with with you through the application of spiritual principles, asking compassionate questions and actively listening, to identify hidden beliefs which block your awareness of truth, that you are a perfect individualized expression of spirit. When your hidden beliefs are surfaced, I work through the art and skill of spiritual mind treatment, at the level of mind, to reveal truth. When truth is revealed, healing occurs. I have specific expertise in the areas of addiction, LGBTQ, relationships and past trauma issues. I provide individual, couples, family and group counseling and visioning, as well as group and business consulting, counseling, and visioning. My clients express that my gentle, down to earth, practical approach provide a safe environment in which they can honestly invest in their healing process and learn effective tools for continuing to grow far beyond the counseling experience. I am available to meet with you at the Center for Spiritual Living - Santa Rosa and by phone. I am also open to traveling to your location on a case by case basis. Namasté. Rafe A. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

    • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
    • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
    • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
    • Overcoming addictions.
    • Managing chronic illness.
    • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

    • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
    • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
    • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
    • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
    • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
    • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
    • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
    • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
    • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
    • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
    • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
    • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
    • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
    • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
    • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
    • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
    • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
    • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
    • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

    How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
