Juan and his crew installed a solid hardwood floor in our home. He was quick to respond to my inquiry, quick to come out for an estimate and kept in touch while we awaited our backordered flooring. On the agreed upon day he arrived on time and got the job done in a single day. The crew was incredibly hard working, professional and did such a nice job. New floor looks so nice. No room for complaints. Juan will get it done for you and knows what he's doing.

Sam knows Ikea product. He was responsive via text and let me know every step of the way when where how and why. He delivered and assembled. He did a good job hanging the doors of 2 of the armoires since the room I had ordered them for had an uneven floor.

Jesse has the ability respond to any job you ask for. I hired him to redo my kitchen and bathroom but he did more than that. He responded to to other needs in the house. Fixing hardwood floors detecting a leak and fixing it, changing the skylights and windows too. I will hire Jesse again and recommend him to others. He is very helpful and responds very friendly..

Arrived on time, did an outstanding job. Udi and his team demo'd the kitchen, removed all flooring and other items and hauled it away. Rolled with the punches when unexpected things came up. I would definitely hire Udi again.

Eduardo and his partner did a fantastic job of installing new entry doors. Eduardo gave us a very competitive estimate and was easy and flexible to work with. The doors were unique and required a bit of problem solving; they demonstrated skill and team work that allowed for a smooth and efficient installation. We’re so pleased with the work that we’re bringing them back to complete our entryway project with the installation of new tile and molding. Looking forward to working with them again!!

Tomas and his crew did an excellent job of removing our carpet and installing our laminate flooring throughout our condo at a reasonable price. They were also very punctual and efficient with their time. We would very much consider hiring them again for a future project!

We had to have electrical pulled in and boxes installed for installation of ceiling fans including the installation of the fans in 3 rooms. Also we found the thermostat controlled gable fan wasn't working correctly so had to repair and adjust that. Work quality was excellent and on time as promised and costs were as promised as well. We look forward to having them back in the near future. We would highly recommend them to anyone.

I cannot say enough about the careful workmanship and professionalism of Julio Otzoy. I have chemical allergies and had to have special materials for my entire green renovation of my bathrooms, and installation of hardwood floors. Not only was he a perfectionist in installing the flooring and the tile work, he brought creativity to the design, attention to the smallest detail and patience in ensuring that all of the work was done with my health in mind. His crew was talented and respectful, as well. His talent goes far beyond flooring, but when it comes to wood flooring, he is outstanding and his prices were right in line. Kathleen Martens

I have been trying to install laminate flooring for a long time and after getting quotes from several big box stores, I pretty much gave up. I decided to try local business and I posted here on Thumbtack. John got in touch with me almost immediately and was very on point. He wanted to get the job done ASAP. I had to postpone a few times because of scheduling conflicts and he was very flexible and understanding. We finally decided on a schedule. He showed up with his buddy Brandon, and they got to work almost immediately. It was fun to talk to them during the process and he explained what he was doing and why and asked if I was OK with his approach. I felt respected. John was up all night and he finished 99% of the work by 5AM next morning. I am very happy with my new floor. I would recommend John for any flooring related work with confidence.

We had the pleasure of working with Don on a remodel of a 70's vintage home. After reviewing some glowing reviews we felt he was the person for the job. There were many challenges -- one in particular was an odd shaped window we wanted installed in our master bedroom. Don persevered patiently with this even though the exact shape was difficult to match and required some time to get it right. He was quick to tell us if he was not the person for a particular job -- such as painting the entire inside -- but contracted it to people he knew and trusted to do a good job. He followed up on every detail. Our dining room was completely re-done and the result is stunning. He installed a Brazilian cherry floor. He is meticulous and very detail oriented. For that reason, one must be patient with the time it takes and the problems that can be encountered in any remodel. My husband and I can recommend Don highly.

We could not be more satisfied! Rich Hardwood Floors sanded (not screened), re-stained and applied three coats of oil polyurethane to nearly 1000 ft. of hardwood flooring in our house’s downstairs, including a large kitchen and dining area, family room, a half bathroom, a TV room, hallway, and foyer. They also removed a carpet and installed new hardwood flooring in our 432 ft. living room. Brad installed a red Oak border that matched the borders on the older floors. The work was completed in less than two weeks. Brad Rich and his crew showed up each day on schedule, performed the work in a most professional manner, and cleaned up the premises before they left. The cost for the entire job was reasonable and we were given a senior discount. We highly recommend Rich Hardwood floors for the quality of their work, their professionalism, and their reasonable prices.

I had the pleasure of working with Billy on a few home renovations in Petaluma, including updating my kitchen and flooring. Not only was the work done PERFECTLY with an exquisite paint job and excellent, sturdy hardware placement, but it was done within the exact time he quoted. What really set this experience apart for me was when he sensed I wasn't completely sure what the heck I was doing, he offered his thoughts on the space as far as color and other finishing touches. It was like working with an architect and interior designer all in one. My finished product was more than I could ever hope for! I couldn't recommend Artisan Home Construction more, and will definitely be calling on their services in the future.

From our first exploration conversation with Ricardo to the close of the project, we had nothing but a fantastic experience with Fenix Floor Corp. Ricardo was extremely responsive, patient, knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with throughout the entire process. I felt like I knew what was happening at each stage and why, as he patiently explained the ins and outs of the floor installation process to us. He also helped us understand other house enchancements that would better prolong the life and quality of our flooring, such as like crawl space clean up and moisture barriers and closing gaps beneath the floor. His team is quick and did a great job with installations. Our floor looks amazing and I am confident that the work behind it was high quality and thorough! We will definitely use Fenix again as we update other parts of our house and highly recommend them!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
