We had a Company Picnic with a short turn around time on 8/11/16 and we called Made With Love Catering and spoke to Debbie Dittman. Debbie was so kind and worked with us because we did not know how many attendees intitally. She was very accommodating and made everything feel less stressful. Our picnic turned out to be about 160 people. Remember this was set up in about 9 business days. Debbie was amazing in the business end. Now for the food feed back. The food was AMAZING! Lots of food, she worked within our budget and we received lots of thumbs up from attendees. I would recommend Made With Love for business or personal catering. Cheers! Frances

We have found Alisa through Thumbtack based upon the reviews and were extremely pleased with her Catering Service for our Wedding. Alisa and her team arrived early, set up the tables and had the venue smelling wonderful with all of the food she cooked. Not only did her and the team assist with the dinner service, but they also cleaned and packed away all of the rental settings. This was extremely beneficial and gave both us and our friends additional time to enjoy the day. If anyone ever needs Catering Services in the East Bay, she is the best and has the most reasonable prices! Greg-n-Greg

Chef Paul & his team did a wonderful job catering our company holiday party in December 2016. He helped us to create a customized menu for our guests & accommodated those who had food sensitivities. He was always in communication with us & was flexible as our venue options had changed throughout the planning process. We ended up having our party at the home of one of our owners, so it was a nice intimate setting. The way the food was displayed was artful & enticing to eat. Everyone talked about how lovely everything was when we returned to work the following week; we all commented about how we wish we could take home some of the wild prawn shooter appetizers & the Asian chicken skewers over noodles but since they were such a hit we ate them all that night! He & his staff are extremely professional; a well oiled group, efficiently running the show, ensuring that our guests had plenty to eat & drink & that the place was spotless. I would definitely recommend Chef Paul to cater your event!

Global Gourmet provided catering for our company Holiday luncheon. Boris and his staff came early to setup and made sure that presentation was great. The food was delicious and replenished timely. They also cleaned up after. Pricing for the whole event was really reasonable, and Boris really works with you to provide a catering menu to fit your budget. We'll be keeping them in mind for the next event.

I had a company party catered by Cowabunga BBQ. First let me say as a business owner it's nice to see professionals at work and that's what David and his wife are professional. I did not have to worry about anything. They got there on time, had it set up for me and my employees and the food was great some of the best Barbeque I've had. Cleaned up when we were done eating. Like they never was there. Can't wait til the next time. Thanks David

Mimi catered our business networking holiday event. We wanted to have a variety of artisan appetizers, and Mimi delivered even more than expected. The food was delicious and the presentations of each appetizer made everyone say, "those look good" and "oh, I want to try one of these." Mimi and her staff were wonderful people. They were cheerful, helped open bottles of Champagne, extra touches, and they cleaned up the kitchen when they were done. We absolutely recommend them.

Wanting to learn to cook lower calorie food that still had great flavor, I hired Zac to come to my home and teach in our kitchen. My husband is our (excellent) cook, I am not a cook (at fifty-something years old), presenting a bit of a challenge. Rising to the occasion, Zac planned a meal that read like the menu at French Laundry! Panic! There was no way I could prepare this meal. Zac said...Way! He met me at Sonoma Market to introduce me to fresh everything, not packaged anything! Back at our kitchen, the magic began and WOW! Probably one of the most delicious dinners I've ever had at home, and certainly rivaling 5 star restaurants. Our cooking and dining experience was nothing short of superb and better yet, not a dollop of butter or a drop of cream was used to create the fantastic soup, salad, and complex main course. Through Zac's exceptional knowledge of herbs and spices, he taught me to create extraordinary flavors to enhance the food, and not over power it. It was a brilliant evening of cooking! Zac is easy going, yet very assured, and his ability to communicate is second to none. Remarkable job by a talented young man who will be continuing to educate us in the kitchen and most assuredly catering events for us. Bravo, Zac...Bravo!

We recently hired Eileen and her staff with What's Cookin to cater a backyard luau party. From beginning to end, she was very easy to work with. The bottom line is that her food was AMAZING! What a talent!! Our party guests raved about the dishes she prepared. Since the party was themed, we worked together to come up with the perfect selections for a summer luau. Her staff that worked the party with her were super friendly and smiley, professional, and instinctively knew how to "be there" for our guests needs. As the hosts of the party, my husband and I were able to focus entirely on our guests, which is exactly what we were looking for. We were all very impressed with everything, and are certain we found our new favorite caterer! Thanks Eileen and your staff for a job well done!

In June of 2018 Tom catered my grandparents 60th wedding anniversary party for us. We worked closely on perfecting the menu with the guest of honor's tastes in mind and Tom was able to accommodate several food allergies as well. Tom and his assistants arrived as planned on the date of the event and with all the necessary kitchen tools as well. All of them were dressed appropriately, very kind and respectful and ready to help with anything we needed. Our menu consisted of several passed hors d' oeuvres, a refreshing summer salad, halibut and filet mignon. The food was ABSOLUTELY wonderful. It was fresh, flavorful and delectable. Each plate was beautifully presented to each guest (seated dinner) and they did a wonderful job of timing each course perfectly so there wasn't a lag in the evening nor a rush to finish. I would highly recommend Tom for any catering needs and look forward to hosting another party at our home with Tom's expertise.

I couldn't have asked for a better experience having Chrysalis Catering working my son's graduation party. Tameeka had great communication skills. She always kept in contact with me before and during the event. She was professional and attentive to the needs of the party and made sure the meal was prepared on time. My guests were also impressed with Tameeka and asked for her card to cater their future events. This was the first time I used this app and my wife and I were pleasantly surprised. Chrysalis Catering is top notch.

Wonderful food! Paired perfectly with our wines for a recent wine club event. Carlo and Theo are the best to work with and we will be using them for wine and food events often. Highly recommend Wicked Pig for all your catering needs!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
