Jim got straight to work. Usually, first lessons I walk away with nothing but Jim gave me drills. Jim wanted to teach me about golf not just to see where I was in my golf game. I will be continuing my work with Jim he is amazing.

I just had my first golf lesson with Ron. I like his approach to analyzing my swing and showing me ways to improve and giving me specific things to work on. I plan to continue with the lessons on a weekly basis. I expect, with Ron’s help, to see my scores go down by several strokes!

You can only have three abilities: knowledgeability, affability, and availability. Bob has been a PGA playing and teaching pro for thirty years, can convey his knowledge to fit your game, and works around your schedule. I took multiple golf lessons from Bob with excellent success. It was a pleasure to do so. He works with players of all skill levels to improve them. He has discussed golf with and taken lessons from virtually all the best known teachers and has distilled this down into a repeatable method to play golf. He relies heavily upon Stack and Tilt principles, along with his own extensive experience as a player, teacher and author. He can tell you what you are doing wrong, how to fix it and how to gain a repeatable swing using your own athletic skill. He is the last golf instructor you will ever need!! William C. Loos M.D. Much improved golfer thanks to Bob Grissett

Ryan is one of the best golf instructors around. For his age he is unbelievable. My short game woes were solved by Ryan after just a few lessons. I went from a 11 index to a 2 in less than a year with Ryan's help.

So, I am going out on a whim and try this. I did not provide my beautiful picture for you all to enjoy, but so you know who to look for if you decide to call me. If you call, leave a voice mail as I do work full-time. My name is Kyle E., and I am a 23-year-old male. I have loved golf from the very moment my dad taught me at age 10. I was on varsity way back when for four years as a starter and at my peak, I held a 1+ handicap (pretty proud of that) for over a year. I helped my teammates develop their games (even beyond what I was capable of performing) by giving them the skills I learned and researched (every sport is a science). I also have given individual lessons to friends who are learning the game. I currently have three individuals who are improving their games who I work with on a daily basis (if you would like to ask about the work I do). I was self taught for a majority of my learned skills but also had individual lessons. I made it to CIF for three years with two of those years making it to the 3rd round (super proud of that). I have competed in a variety of amateur tournaments, including Candlewood Country Club, Hacienda CC, Yorba Linda CC, Black Gold CC, etc. The reason I am writing this and offering lessons, whether that be individual or group is because at 23, I am expanding my personal investments and want to utilize my skills outside of my office and participants and provide people wanting to pick up the game for the first time, who are experienced golfers, who want to improve their focus, etc. a person to contact. What I am offering is as simple. I would love to meet at a nearby golf range to Chapman university (Super Sport by the Orange Mall, Riverview Santa Ana Golf Course, Willowick Golf Course). The first lesson will be free (but donations will be welcomed). All you have to do is bring your clubs, pay for the bucket of balls, and be ready to learn for a half hour. If you're happy with what you walked away with, we can meet again and discuss a half hourly rate for following dates (which is my goal). If you are a business major (because the stereotype is almost all business starts on a golf course), if all of your friends play golf, if the sport always has intrigued you, or if you want to develop your game into something more competitive, give me a call. Who knows? What you will learn about golf, mindfulness, or if you just need someone to listen to you in the form of a life coaching role. I have extensive work with kids as well, all ages 4-18 as well as adults. Just give me a call and please leave a voice mail with your name, number and a good time to call back. Many cheers, Kyle Edquist

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What makes a good golf instructor?

A good golf instructor is someone who has the playing skill you’d like to achieve, is qualified to teach golf, and is someone you can get along with. Some experts recommend you only take golf lessons from coaches with active accreditation from reputable associations such as the PGA, LPGA, or similar organizations that focus on continuing education. You’ll be spending hours out on the green with the pro during lessons, so a good rapport, strong communication and the right personality fit are key. A proven track record is also important. Read reviews from their current and former students to make sure they have helped people achieve their golfing goals, and always ask about the instructor’s experience before signing on for lessons. Years of providing lessons can contribute to a deeper understanding of how to teach the sport. Just because your friend or partner is great at golf doesn’t mean they’ll give good golf lessons. Invest in a professional golf instructor who knows how to teach the sport from short game to full swing.

How much are golf lessons?

Golf lessons are a great way to break into the sport or take your golf game to a new level. The national average cost for golf lessons is $50-$60, but prices will vary based on what type of lessons you want. The most expensive golf lessons will be private instruction with top-tier coaches. These are golf instructors who have held high professional ranking and have a good reputation. Regardless of who is teaching, private instruction is always more costly than couples’ lessons or small group lessons (usually up to four people). Teachers often offer a lower price per lesson when you buy a package of several lessons at one time. Here are some examples of average golf lesson costs:

  • Individual lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 60-minute private lesson: $60.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $100.
  • Couples’ lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 90-minute duo lesson: $100.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $125.
  • Golf lesson package pricing:
    • Purchase six individual lessons at one time and save $10.
    • Purchase 10 individual lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase six couples’ lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase 10 couples’ lessons at one time and save $200.

What age should you start golf lessons?

Golf lessons for kids can start as early as age four or five. They’re too young for formal training, but you can keep them interested and engaged and give them a feel for the game. U.S. Kids Golf recommends starting formal training for junior golfers at six years old. It’s important for young golfers to swing clubs that are the right length and weight for their body; U.S. Kids Golf provides a fitting guide.

Golf lessons for kids, especially young kids, should be about encouraging success rather than correcting mistakes, according to U.S. Kids Golf. If you want your child to love golf for life, you want their early experiences to be positive. Golf lessons for kids are less expensive than golf lessons for adults. A monthly rate (including four lessons) for group golf lessons for kids may average $100. Semi-private golf lessons for kids may range from $150 to $200 per month. Location and instructor reputation can also affect cost. Often, discounts are provided when multiple months are purchased at one time.
