I needed a caterer for my dad's funeral reception. Spoke to other caterers but Carolina of Gourmet Lover's Catering was the only one who gave her condolences, this meant a lot to me. The full service presentation was tasteful, the food delicious and reasonably priced. There were no exta added on fees like the other caterers. I highly recommend Gourmet Lover's Catering, Boris & Carolina are a wonderful team and you will not be disappointed.

I don't even know where to begin! Jose is an amazing caterer and I am so happy we hired him for our wedding this past Friday. When we were first tasting caterers food they all seemed metiocre but Joses was amazing! We hired him on the spot! Not to mention he was the most reasonable price! Then everyone was making me nervous saying that catered food is never as good when they have too cool it in large quantities (we had 180 people). When we got to the reception everyone was already eating appetizers and happy. When Jose spotted my husband and I he came up to us and told us he had made us each an appetizer plate and if we wanted it. Then he came up to me to make sure I wanted dinner served when I had originally asked. I did and he brought us the first 2 plates. The food was amazing! Just as good as I remember! Everyone was so pleased and kept talking about how the food was the best they had ever had at a wedding! That was exactly what I wanted! His bartender was amazing and all his staff was so friendly. The setup looked nice and professional. The drinks he brought were great and everyone was talking about how great the mint water was! Then I ordered cheeseburger sliders and French fries to be served late night and they were amazing! He even brought wings and everyone was so excited! They went fast and by the time I got over there everything was gone. Jose told me let me get your plates and pulled out two foil covered plates. He always thought of us first and without him I wouldn't have eaten. All day everything had hiccups and my rentals were late, everything was slightly wrong except Jose! He really came through and went above and beyond. I will definitely hire him again for any events and recommend him to the fullest!

Chef William catered a dinner party for 11 women at a vacation rental home in the Coachella Valley. He was very easy to communicate with prior to the event, and he offered a great menu at a reasonable price. He arrived on time and set up discreetly in the kitchen while our guests drank sangria and ate appetizers (all provided by Chef William) outside by the pool. All of the food was delicious, and the portion sizes were generous. The paella was fun to watch him prepare in the giant pan and tasted delicious even the next day as leftovers. The tortoni dessert was also a hit. Chef William cleaned up impeccably after dinner, and we were all grateful to wake up the next morning to an immaculate kitchen and no dishes to wash. I would definitely recommend Chef William to cater a fun and delicious dinner for a large group.

Jessica is truly awesome, if you really want your wedding to be awesome, hire Jessica. Imagine Winston Wolf from Pulp Fiction as a blonde and more approachable. She gets things done and really solves problems sometimes even before you've thought of them. She is always on time, and is always aware of the time and what should be happening at any given moment with the wedding party and vendors. I simply can't imagine how our day would've went without Jessica quarterbacking the event. Due to ours and her schedule we didn't get to meet face to face until the day before our wedding for rehearsal. This had us a little uneasy but it really did not matter as immediately upon meeting her we knew she was the right person. Her professionalism, personality, and experience went to work as soon as she stepped out of her car. She asked us how we were getting on with preparations and if we needed any last minute items and asked about any concerns. She listened to everything we said and actually started solving our concerns right away. I had a worry about the parking situation for the wedding as we didn't want any cars in photos but we had to keep the gates open. She managed to get a sign made to let the guest and cab drivers know where to park or drop guests off, and it really worked well. When she met the wedding party she gauged what type of crowd we were and made sure everyone felt comfortable to ask her for anything, even let my groomsmen know if we run out of pre gaming beers she'd be happy to make the run to the store. On the big day she went to work immediately, she did everything we asked of her and more! She ensured my wife and I and our parents were fed first and our cups were always, always full. I always thought the coordinator was suppose to pull the strings and be invisible on the day. I thought this because of weddings I've recently attended as a guest. However Jessica was always there and available, everyone in our wedding party and even guests felt like they could approach her and ask her anything. I truly preferred her presence and not hidden away behind the scenes. She genuinely looked happy to be there and it's obvious she loves her work. When you're planning a wedding everyone is quick to tell you what you will need and won't need and what you can get away with on the cheap. A day of coordinator should not be on that list. You can prepare and prepare but something unexpected comes up the day of or you forget to do something and you won't have the time or mental energy to deal with it properly yourself. This is where Jessica's awesomeness is invaluable. She will take care of all the loose ends and make certain the schedule runs smoothly, so you can actually enjoy your day and savour the experience of getting married!

We hired Jeff and his staff for our wedding weekend. Friday we had a "meet and greet" BBQ and Saturday Jeff provided the food for our buffet style taco bar. We live in San Diego so we were really in the dark about Palm Springs area caterers. The food and the presentation was outstanding. We gave Jeff ideas for what we wanted and he took control and delivered all of it and more. He is a pleasure to work with and makes every effort to ensure the food is excellent and that everything runs smoothly (even when it's not his responsibility). Jeff helped with many components of our weekend, including putting us in touch with a reliable party rental business and culinary artist for the wedding cake. We are eternally grateful for Jeff and the Creating Catering staff for being part of our special weekend.

I hired Firstclass Catering for a party at a private residence on Friday night. Michael and his staff were wonderful. The food was outstanding. All of our guests were very complimentary of the food and service. Frank the bartender kept everyone's drink full. From the setup to the teardown the entire evening was just perfect. The biggest compliment I can offer was from the owner of the home. After all the guests had left they looked around the house and stated "did we have a party here tonight?" "You would never know it." I highly recommend FirstClassCatering for your event. Well done.

I am beyond grateful to Thumbtack for connecting me to Chef Keith Prante and his team at Hautè Productions Events and Catering to cater my mom's 80th birthday celebration. They are absolutely A-MAZING! Chef Prante was one of two chefs who responded to my request via Thumbtack, and I also received a personal referral. Neither of the other caterers offered ANYWHERE NEAR the quality, selections, variety and value that Hautè offered at my price point. We had our tasting today, and it absolutely sealed the deal! Everything was delicious and the presentation was outstanding. I highly recommend Hautè Productions to any potential customer who appreciates excellence, accommodation and genuine customer service.

Zeke Casas catered my daughters Quinceñera, he made Chili verde, rice, beans, fresh salad, an amazing salad dressing, rolls, and salsa. So many people loved the food.. so much flavor with every bit.. there was not one thing without flavor.. the family rated his food as the most amazing, delicious, dish they have tasted. Zeke and his crew are very respectful, helpful, and caring. They take the time out to make sure everything was to your liking.. they left the hall kitchen spotless, like no one had ever used it.. We asked our friends and family members who had recently been married what they thought the most important part of the wedding was, and they unanimously said "THE FOOD". From the moment we requested a quote Bill's attention to detail made it a wonderful and memorable experience. We were provided with and absolutely delicious lunch at our tasting; where Bill customized our menu to fit our unique wedding theme. The staff was friendly, informative, professional and genuinely warm and kind. Bill's help however moved beyond his fabulous food. For any and EVERY coordination mishap, he was there with creative and inventive solutions. His staff went above and beyond, even assisting in set up and decoration. We were truly overwhelmed by their generosity and their willingness to be of assistance. On our wedding day, as we ran from the car to the venue to avoid the terrible storm; we were greeted by Bill with a mini buffet for the bridal party so that we would have a chance to actually eat at our wedding. To say the food was amazing is an understatement. I cannot describe how delicious it was or how beautifully and artfully arranged. I truly cannot do it justice. When asked, our guest said that hands down, it was the best food they had ever had at a wedding. Our menu included custom flank steak sliders with asian slaw, a variety of sushi, mini ribs, chicken skewers, grilled vegetable stuffed crepes, procuitto wrapped asparagus, endive spoons filled with tabouleh, chicken sate, and so much more. The service was impeccable and after everything was done, the staff cleaned and left everything immaculate. Most importantly, Bill was sensitive and understanding of our situation. You see , we were two brides. Bill and his staff were shining examples of what it is to treat everyone with equality and dignity and respect. We were afraid of vendors not wanting to work with us and Bill took all that anxiety away. Through his vast network he found amazing and supportive vendors who were ready to celebrate with us and were empowered by our decision to get married. We cannot thank Bill enough for the many kindnesses he bestowed on us and we cannot wait to eat at his amazing restaurant again. - C & A

I'd like to take a moment to thank the Experience Event Inc. for all of their hard work at my son's 8th birthday party. I was blown away with the Sesame Street themed party. Also, how professional, innovative and open the owner's are. I felt confident with allowing them to take my idea's and bring them to a whole new level. I left a more detailed review with pictures on their Facebook page, but I thought it maybe helpful to share my experience here. I will be using their business in the near future.

The customer service was excellent very nice and professional. They were on time the food was great seriously really good 😋. I got a lot of great feedback from my co workers saying they loved it . Another one of the best things is that they have awesome prices." Compared to a lot of other places ...and they still give you FIVE STAR services and food. We hired Jory for a 20 person office party. Jory's cooking was immaculately presented and so flavorful. We wanted delicious food that was organic, sustainable and healthy—and he delivered. He made Lemon caper chicken, a chickpea tzatziki salad with olives, pesto vegetable medley, homemade granola with yogurt and honey, and charred tomato and kale salad with feta. All served in festive silver platters. On top of the food tasting superb, Jory was a great host and fit in seamlessly with our guests whose questions were answered professionally and in good spirits. Using him again. For sure.

Chef Mark is an amazing chef! He was very professional. I had a small dinner party with friends. I wasn’t sure what I wanted. Since I am on a low carb diet. After speaking with him he created a Menu to fit my diet restrict but also carter to my friends non restricted diet. Appetizer was fried calamari with sweet and sour sauce. The salad was a fresh Ahi Tuna salad. The entree was mouth watering pan seared Scallops with lemongrass carrot ginger purée. Lastly was dessert which I could only have a taste of my friends apple crisp with vanilla ice cream and homemade salted caramel. It was to hard to resist. Chef Mark made fresh berries with he’s own whipping cream!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
