Mike and his team were great! Mike came out within a few days of contacting him to provide a bid to thin/trim our 40+ foot high Elm. Not only was his bid very competitive, he was the only one that knew of the Dutch elm disease and took steps to ensure that trimming the tree would not do more harm than good. His team worked quickly and cleaned up everything after they finished up. I will definitely work with Green Arbor for future tree work!

Drake completed lawn work for me. He trimmed trees, removed a dead tree, cultivated my garden, hauled and distributed rock and mulch. He also sanded and refinished my redwood patio. He is very professional and makes sure you are satisfied before he is finished. He is a very hard quick worker who works until the job is complete. I was very pleased with all the work he has done for me and would highly recommend him to anyone. I will hire him for any future work that needs to be completed.

Stephanie and her husband did an amazing job cleaning up my extremely overgrown and leaf-covered gardens/yard. They also removed two small-medium sized trees for us. The yard clean up was a bit expensive but overall, totally worth it!

Not very good. Juniper trimming was a disaster. Very high priced!! We've hired another tree service, to repair, fix and actually trim the tops of these evergreens. We're are so disappointed. And they even got paid more, than the estimate. Unbelievable. The price increase would have been just fine, if only their work would've reflected it.

My rental house had a backyard that the renters had stopped maintaining. Weeds had overgrown the plants, trees hadn't been cut back, etc. What had been a really nice yard looked like a jungle. Josh and his crew came out in one day and turned it back into the showplace it used to be. The work they did was amazing. All the weeds are gone, the trees are cut back, i can see the rose bushes again. I am trying to sell the house, and the back yard was a big selling point. Because of the work they did, I can be proud to show off the yard again. I recommend them very highly. They were very courteous and professional. They did a great job of getting my yard back.

Martin and his crew did a tremendous job putting in landscaping in the backyard of my new home. They created a plan that worked with my budget, and were truly a one-stop-shop, providing carpentry, pet turf, sod, hard-scape, raised beds, trees, shrubs, and sprinklers/drip lines. They did beautiful work and were an absolute ease to deal with.

Lucas did 2 difficult removals for me, both tall pines. The first was an 80' plus tree 22" from my house overhanging my roof, I was nervous! He spent about 4 hours carefully limbing, topping, and then droping the stick. Little more than a few twigs ended up on my roof (they were swept off) and the lawn was left totaly clear of debris. The second tree was close to the road and at the edge of my driveway and a stand of mature rhododendrons, it would have been best taken out with a crane but the town wanted a police detail in the road if we used a crane, expensive! Lucas assured me he could limb it on the way up and drop the stick in small chunks on the way down, keeping all debris away from the road. I went just as he said and saved me a good cunk of change over hiring a crane and a cop. Thank you Lucas and crew for a great job.

Dena, Mel and crew are the most delightful, responsive and polite team to work with ever! They get it and will respectively listen to your ideas and connect with you no matter the budget. We had them do our entire landscaping front and back which included hardscape, a pergola, pavers, sod, berms, a water feature, flowers, and numerous trees. Albeit it a lot of work but a small yard, they over-the-top amazed us with their design ideas and customer service. Our yards are GORGEOUS! We will also be using them in the future for all our maintenance needs.

I am extremely happy with James & Jim Tree Service who did an excellent job for me on a very difficult tree trimming task. James & Jim Tree Service provided high quality work and service done professionally, safely and at a reasonable cost. I have a large tree at the back of my garage that required large limbs overhanging the garage to be removed. James & Jim Tree Service performed the challenging job in workmanlike manner and the tree now looks great. I would recommend James & Jim Tree Service for any tree care work you might need to have done.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.
