Scott J says, "We can sum up our review of A2Z Builders with one sentence: If you are not using A2Z Builders for your remodel/build you might be making a big mistake. Our project consisted of:Kitchen remodel and appliancesTwo (2) bathrooms remodeled with vanities, fixtures, flooring and paintHardwood flooring installed in lower level of house, 4 rooms and stairway to landing and upper levels, including baseboard installationFireplace modification and cabinet installation in family roomPainting/Drywall repair in lower level of houseRemoval and finish of pony walls living roomOur experience with A2Z Builders:What stood out most was the absence of the typical Us versus Them dynamic often encountered with contractors. It was a collaborative atmosphere where our Project Manager, Tom shared and understood our vision for the project. Our kitchen designer Michelle also understood our vision and facilitated the kitchen remodel.Communication with Tom was excellent. We knew each week what was to take place and when. They showed up. Work was always done as planned and on time.A few unexpected issues arose, but Toms solution was always the best solution in resolving the issues. Tom was always concerned with details. After 30-50 % of the project was complete we had developed a trust with Tom and A2Z Builders. At that point we did not have to question what we were told.At no point did we feel A2Z was cutting corners to expedite the project or cut costs. We utilized several of their partners and were pleased with the materials and costs.A2Z Builders exceeded our expectations. Their commitment to client satisfaction set a standard that few contractors can match. Based upon our experience, we would recommend without hesitation A2Z Builders for your home remodel/build.Scott/Kathi J."See more

Xander Sorensen says, "I initially reached out to Kaleb from Project Kitchen for help with an ADU I was considering building in my backyard. After a few walkthroughs and discussions about zoning and budget, we pivoted and decided to go with a detached garage instead. Looking back, Im really glad we did...it was the right call, and Kaleb helped guide that decision without ever pushing anything. He just asked smart questions and gave me options. The garage build ended up being a great first project to test the waters with Project Kitchen. What stood out was how communicative and organized Kaleb was throughout. From permits to the final paint touch-up, he kept me updated, explained things clearly, and was always respectful of both my time and my property. His crew was also professional and friendly...not always the case in construction, so that was appreciated. Not only did the finished garage turn out even better than I expected, but it also added serious value to my home - much more than I anticipated. Ive had multiple neighbors stop and ask who did the work, and Im proud to point them to Kaleb.Im now in work with him again about a ground-up home build Im planning. That should tell you something...when someone earns your trust like this, you want to keep them in your corner. Not everything was perfect (no project ever is), but whenever a small hiccup came up, Kaleb took accountability and resolved it quickly. Thats what makes a great GC. Someone who doesnt disappear when something goes off-script.Highly recommend Project Kitchen if youre looking for someone whos sharp, easy to work with, and delivers real value."See more

S H says, "We hired Blue Sky to build our 2 story addition in the spring of 2015. We were well prepared ahead of time. We had complete architectural plans, structural engineer analysis, and most of our finishings picked out and ready to go well before they even broke ground. Finally, we stuck to the plans, with some minor (non-structural) adjustments along the way, which made for a relatively smooth process. We added a 2 story addition to the back of our house.Partway though our project, the roof was off the house and we had 3 days of major rain/thunderstorms. The house was covered with a tarp but the storm still managed to soak everything inside the house so it turned into a full gut job. Blue Sky handled the insurance claim (their insurance, not mine) and we were put up in a hotel with meals covered as well, as our house became uninhabitable. Yes this was a major pain but these things happen and we trusted them to just handle it and they did. Despite all of this, they were able to complete the project at the end of Sept 2015, only a few weeks past the original quoted completion date of early September. Some of the subs weren't the most impressive I've seen. Roofing had to be worked on a few times until I was satisfied along with paint. Trims were great and I still use the carpenter they hired for miscellaneous jobs. Plumbing, electric, and HVAC were all great and worked with us to make sure we were happy with everything. I subbed out the flooring myself but Blue Sky still coordinated everything with them directly. We have friends and friends of friends that also used Blue Sky and had problems. I will say that our project manager Kyle made all the difference. He returned calls/texts, even on evenings and weekends. He met me at the house anytime I wanted to talk to him about something. He remembered everything we discussed without having to remind him multiple times. He did what he said he was going to do, which is all that I could ask of a project manager. Other people we know had different PMs and their experiences were completely different than mine.In the past week we had a breaker on our electric panel go bad. We finally had a chance to test their "lifetime warranty". Kyle had the electrician out to our house within a day or two and had the problem corrected, no charge. Even now, almost 2 years after we finished the project, he still replies to my calls/texts if there are problems (this has been the only issue thus far and it was due to a breaker that went bad).My 5 star rating is based on the fact that we are thrilled with our house and I can honestly say that Kyle was the reason it went so well. I have no experience with any of their other PMs but if you go with Blue Sky then I would recommend waiting to start until you can have Kyle be your PM."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

What does a finish carpenter charge per hour?

On average, finish carpenters charge $60 per hour. However, this hourly rate will vary depending on where you live, the scope of the project and other factors. For a more accurate estimate, ask for price quotes from at least three finish carpenters in your area.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.
