I like that they put the stain samples out on the hardwood so we could actually see what it looks like. It’s hard to get someone to even call back, these guys were responsive and got us scheduled quick. Would recommend to anyone

Does Great work. He do hardwood and tile through out. Really worked with us on the prices. Literally does EVERYTHING. Only reason they are getting 4 stars is because they do not haul away trash and when you doing a lot of work it ends to be a mountain of trash and cut up materials. Other than that I would hire again !

Dez was available for my project immediately after quoting me a very fair price. His team was professional. Sanded out some floors that had some sizeable dings and dents and stained them to look like new. Very pleased. I have already hired Dez and his team to install hardwood in other rooms in my house. Can say enough good things about their work. Highly recommend to anyone looking to have flooring installed or refinished!

We had a wonderful experience with Dan and his crew. Aaron was the main worker that installed our floors and he did an amazing job. He was very professional and friendly. The floors look wonderful even with the intricate cuts that needed to be made. They used our front porch to cut the wood and store their equipment. Before they left, they cleaned it and left it better then when they got here. I've been very impressed with Dan and his crew and I would highly recommend their work! I'm so happy that we used them to install our hardwood.

Rodrigo and Ha were both very cordial and respectful. Two days after we contracted to have Toski do our floors the material was delivered to allow it to become acclimated to its location prior to it being installed. They moved all the heavy furniture and removed all carpet, baseboard and tackstrip in a very efficient manner with minimal inconvenience to us. The installation of the floor went as smooth as silk and it turned out nothing short of beautiful. They are excellent craftsman and we would definitely hire them again if the need arises. My recent experience with Papyrus Flooring was nothing but positive. Willie installed 200 sqft of red oak in the basement addition and the sand, stain and finish came out flawless. After that we had him re sand the treads leading downstairs. What impressed us the most was his knowledge of the process and his willingness to communicate the basics with us so we could keep other projects we had going on schedule. We would defiantly recommend him to anyone in need of hardwood services. Good luck I hope this review helps.

From the moment I met with Mike D'Angelo to discuss a deck replacement on a home I was planning to purchase, I had a pretty strong feeling he was honest, knowledgeable and competent. I since learned he can do pretty much any project from the ground up and he and his crew just finished replacing my marble tile flooring with hardwoods, reconfiguring a 3-way gas fireplace including new stonework and taking out some corner and over-the staircase shelving units. I didn't give him much lead time but he was able to make everything happen within my time frame. He listened carefully to what I was looking for and came up with some great suggestions that I ended up using. He also proved to be a one-stop shop and whatever I thought of doing, he either could get it done or knew someone else who could. I highly recommend using Mike and All Universal. I have already signed up for a painting project and plan to use his services for my deck replacement in the spring.

Joe put in floor and shower tiles in 3 of my bathrooms and laid hardwood floors in my living room. He is very detailed and does great work. I would highly recommend Joe for any project you might have. For the price and quality of work he can't be beat. Every stage of he way Joe kept me Informed and raised concerns when necessary. Joe is not a person to cut corners so if it's quality and a job done right, you couldn't make a better choice.

We love our floors after John refinished them. They look so amazing. I would recommend him to anyone I know wanting to revitalize their wood floors. When we bought our house and ripped up the carpet we were concerned with the condition of the hardwood floors underneath. After years of being covered up with carpet and tile , being spray painted in spots, and MANY screws put in to prevent squeaking I was not sure if the floors could be fixed. John walked me through his process during his inspection of the floor and ensured me that we had great wood hidden under the mess. I felt confident in his skill and felt like we could trust him with this big project. He did an amazing job and we are so pleased with the results. He took great care to remove screws, filled in the holes, laced in new wood to replace damaged spots and somehow fixed all the squeaking.

Jesse had fixed up my fathers home for selling. He did an outstanding job by painting all of the rooms, replacing new carpet in the bedrooms, putting in new hardwood flooring in the living room/kitchen, and even fixing our back deck. Also in our new home has installed a new dish washer and faucet for our sink. He has always been very kind and professional. I highly reccomend Jesse for any handy man work.

Elevations was absolutely great. I called them because we were putting in new vents for our A/C system and needed the old places where the vents were removed filled in and painted. Dan did such good work, that we also had him paint the entire outside of our house, complete hardwood floor repairs where there was water damage in the kitchen, and clean our chimney and install a chimney cap. Later I had Dan come back and do some other small tasks, including replace a toilet with a newer model. In each instance, he was prompt, clean, courteous and very knowledgeable. I really liked how he never tried to sell me things I didn't need, but advocated for the kind of repairs he would do for himself. I felt completely comfortable with him at all times, and we are so thrilled with the outcome. His work quality is unsurpassable! I'll definitely be calling Elevations again the next time I need work done.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
