Jacob first came to give me a quote on installing a gas line for my new gas stove. He and his apprentice, Stacey, were punctual, respectful and considerate (they brought booties to cover their shoes!) I accepted the quote and when they came back to install the gas line, they were, again, prompt and respectful of my time and my home They did an AMAZING job and I would recommend them to anyone who needs any king of plumbing work done. Jacob is a Master Plumber and takes great pride in his work. I enjoyed working with Pipecraft and I would hire them again should I have any plumbing needs in the future. Thank you, Jake!

I was really happy with Obsolete Tile Roofing and Concrete Services. I had roof repairs that needed to be made in a timely manner due to a home inspection with a sale. He was very responsive, honest and got the job done. I would recommend. Thank you!

Mike did an excellent job repairing the pergola at my father's home. His fees are very reasonable and work exceptional. I live in a different state and Mike communicated with me in a very timely manner as well as sent pictures the minute the job was done. I would highly recommend his services.

Hello, Forest Ponder and his team (Beyond Boundaries Construction) completed a bathroom remodel for me and my wife and we are more than happy with the job. I had done the demo on our bathroom and with a Christmas deadline I was facing I realized that I couldn’t get the remodel done in time. I found the Thumbtack site and Beyond Boundaries Construction with Forest Ponder. We had purchased all the materials and this job was basically an all labor. Even with everything we purchase there was still some odds and ends that needed to be picked up. Noel just picked up what was needed and then Forest turned over the receipts. His employee Noel was on time and put in a full day’s work every day for the 7 day project. Forest and his team were able to take our vision and make it come to life and we love the way the bathroom turned out. When trying to do this type of home improvement you always worry about the quality, skill and bottom line. My calls were always returned in a timely fashion and all questions answered when asked. I would not have any problem in recommending Beyond Boundaries Construction

Purchasing a new home, we found too many plumbing problems. Luckily the owner came right out, addressed every problem within a seven day period, the first night he showed up when I needed him at 9 PM. This guy doesn't mess around and he takes care of you!

I needed to have an old kitchen faucet replaced. Chris was very knowledgeable and professional through the entire installation and he did the work correctly the first time and at the price quoted. He took the time to answer any questions I had and explained everything he was doing during the replacement. He even took the time to look at an additional plumbing issue I was having and offered to do the work but also took the time to show me how I could do it myself. I will definitely call Chris again for any future work and would highly recommend him to anyone needing repairs at their home.

The workers are polite and come promptly and work very hard. I hired them to do one job at first... to demolish a 14 X 18 foot wall of bricks/entertainment center in a new home that I purchased. My husband and I were very pleased and then re-hired the crew to do a dozen more things to renovate and update this home. Among the tasks they removed tile, removed a 3-way facing gas fireplace that was awkwardly placed, remove brick facing off some columns, move a few floor outlets, take out dated shower sliding doors and move chandeliers and some utility cabinets (so I'd have more space for my large washer/dryer). And more! This is an excellent company that I will continue to use for smaller projects. No one on the team even flinched when I changed my mind about things, they just go with the flow... and do what I ask like true professionals. Pricing on my original project was the best on thumbtack, and continues to be very fair.

We moved into our home last year and needed to complete the landscaping in the back yard. We were looking for a less expensive option and decided to xeriscape with stone and mulch. We provided Hayden with a sketch and he went to work. He and his crew executed the job better than our vision. We love the dry creek bed and will be adding more plants and flowers in the future. We couldn't be happier with the final results. The project was completed on time and on budget. We would highly recommend Down to Earth Landscaping.

Matt is an excellent handyman who was capable of doing everything I needed to get my house ready to sell. While homebuying/selling can be very stressful, Matt was certainly a very bright spot in the work that he did for me. His tasks included replacing the caulking in the bathrooms/kitchen, replacing door trim, patching and painting over some dings in the walls, and installing privacy film on several windows. There were probably a couple more things that I missed. Matt showed up every day at the time we agreed, and ensured a very high standard of quality with his work. My house was on the market for just 36 hours before we received an offer at $5k over asking, and I credit Matt's work with helping to make that possible. I would have him back any time to do more work on my new home.

Kelly with Curb Appeal Masonry came to fix mortar cracks in my stone siding. It was for a home inspection. He was very responsive when I reached out and made the soonest appointment his schedule allowed. His work was done well and my home looks great. Some of his fixes dried so fast I couldn't tell where the crack had been. I would highly recommend Curb Appeal Masonry.

Brett was so friendly and on time. Very easy to communicate with. He has a lot of knowledge in all areas of home improvement, and went above and behind the repairs I requested. I had my bathroom repainted and recaulked, and he went the extra mile and offered ideas for cabinetry and aesthetics, so my bathroom got an overhaul! I'm very happy with the result.

Wait, seriously, go no further! Scot with prime handyman is who you want to hire! I’m telling you! I hired Scot just to paint the interior of my home, yet after a nightmare experience with a general contractor who left my home unfinished, Scot handled it all! He literally finished everything the other guy didn’t, basically became my new General Contractor to help me out, took over the whole project, got it all done in a timely manner, was there to consult as well as doing the work, didn’t even flinch when more work was needed to do to fix the other guys mistakes, then painted the place beautifully, and left my home better then how I imagined. This guys the real deal. Now and again you get an amazing find on thumbtack of someone you know you’ll always call from now on for work, Scot with Prime Handyman is it!! Truly great experience. He will impress you for sure!

Dana, Shannon and James were able to tackle a variety of projects that I needed completed within a limited time frame in order to get my home ready to sell. Due to being a military family, I had to do this all on my own until Dana, Shannon and James came along. Let me tell you, they do it all and they do an incredible job... from interior to exterior even creating and installing customized shelving, wood flooring transitions, and a stand up shower. Their professionalism, expertise, attention to detail, customer service and can-do attitude made me excited to work with them. I will definitely have them help me on future projects as well as refer them to my friends and family.

My husband and I hired Custom Builders LLC (Kaleb) to tear down the half hall staircase leading to the second level of our home and replaced it with a open rail and baluster staircase. Kaleb's responsiveness throughout the job was great. We where kept informed about the timing of when materials would arrive and when each segment of the job would be completed. Kaleb's work is high quality and he kept a very clean work space between each segment of the project. We got very good value for the job. We had done some research about prices before we hired Custom Builders and found Kaleb's price for the job was very reasonable. The timing on completion of each segment of the job was longer than planned. Completion time was double the time that was initially set. There were a number of issues with getting the correct materials from Kaleb's vender. If you are willing to work with a small contractor who does the work himself Kaleb Shultz (Custom Builders LLC) is your guy.

We hired Pegasus for an whole-home interior paint project for our new house (which included walls and trim). It was a huge job, and the Pegasus team stuck with us all week to get it done. They were careful to remove blinds and tape properly prior to painting too, so as not to cause any damage. We're thrilled with our fresh paint color - it made the house look brighter and immediately more updated. Being contractors, they also paid close attention to other details along the way - fixing door hinges and applying caulk to repair areas that were previously not sealed. They recommended a few other miscellaneous areas that need attention, so we'll likely work with them again on other maintenance projects in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.
