I had Marlon Aldiz (Limpro) remove an eisting concrete slab from the back of my house and design and install a larger (20' X 14") stamped, colored concrete patio in it's place, and a concrete walkway from the front side gate to the back alongside the house and tied onto the side of the patuio..They did a superior job from start to finish..I am so pleased that I show pictures of it to all my friends and they are really impressed with how great it looks!! I recommend Limpro to all and say many thanks to Marlon and his crew for a great job!! ps..thanks for coming back and sealing the concrete..it looks even better..John

Ian and Skyler did a great job. They built me a custom metal shed, refinished all my fences and applied a transparent stain. They also performed 5-7 other handymen jobs around my house. Their attention to detail is something I liked best. I will be using them again.

Although the dog door installation took longer than expected, GSD did a good job.

Steve pulled over 18-20 bushes, including a chainlink fence that was intertwined. He chipped, used for mulch, and hauled away ALOT of huge roots. He also took the remaining chainlink fence and put it along the side of the house to contain the dogs.

On time, polite, clear communication. Great suggestions for modifying the design of the fence to ensure our dogs were safely contained. I'd definitely use these guys again.

Matt was a pleasure to work with. We are very pleased with the results. He was able to create a gorgeous custom cubby design for our mudroom, as well as a storage seating/bench area for our nook. He went above and beyond by adding details that we hadn't accounted for in the planning phase, such as rerouting a vent to come out the side of the bench, and he did all of this while sticking with his quoted price. Very trustworthy, honest, and talented. We have already planned to have him back to build us a pergola and custom closet. Thanks Matt!

After I did a request for some tile work and some other items, I got Don ' s quote . He ended up coming by that night, the next day he started, he worked for 5 days in our house did tiling, put in a new floor, did drywall , fixed a light switch, fixed a toilet , doing new groute . He was very resinable on price per hour, kept materials to the budget. I would diffently recommend Don. Our house goes on the market for sale on Monday and I now feel ready.

Rick installed a double dog door and ramp for us. I couldn't be more pleased with his responsiveness, flexibility, craftsmanship, reasonable rates, and attention to detail. We discovered after its first trial run that the ramp needed some extra treading and Rick offered to return and help us out with this as well. Definitely would call him again for future house projects!

Brian and his team did an outstanding job. We wanted to upgrade all of our windows. Although our home is semi-custom, the builder had used middling windows that had started to sag and were difficult to open or close. Brian showed us options with no pressure. It was an education not a sales process. We ended up selecting high quality Anderson windows. We have been very pleased with our selection and with the installation quality. Brian does not cut corners. His integrity and quality are both outstanding.

Nick and Eric remodeled our master bathroom -- everything from rebuilding the shower stall, fixing a plumbing leak, tiling in and around the shower and bathtub, all plumbing associated with three new shower heads and new bathtub hardware, adding can lights, installing a new wall sconce (and outlet), running HDMI from master bedroom to bathroom, making custom mirrors, designing and making a custom barn door (and installing), installing new flooring in master bath and master bedroom, installing new baseboards, installing new vanity and all the plumbing and hardware associated, installing new ceiling exhaust in master bathroom, custom building and installing new glass block windows (2) and finishing exterior of window casing to match rest of house, installing new valves for toilet, and installing new toilet, and many other minor adjustments throughout the project. The best part was working with Nick and Eric throughout the process to continually find the right solution and produce a spectacular new bathroom.

Fran built our house from start to finish. We still have the basement to finish. It is a rather large house. The quality of the work was excellent. He custom built our home and we love it. He had a lot of very good suggestions. He and his crew were always polite, friendly and cooperative. They were good and courteous to one another. We were around them for approximately six months or more. The things we had trouble with were the work seemed to have taken longer as there would be days when there was no one doing anything. We understand that we were not his only clients and he had to manage the crews. We were always around, which in talking with other people who have had their houses built, most builders do not want or allow. We have a few things which still need to be finished. I feel Fran will do them but it is difficult to work around. The other thing is that I felt, then and now, that if the premises were kept more clean with less clutter they would be able to work more easily. As it was. one group doing staining left. some rags in a pile. When they caught fire there was a lot of damage with the smoke. I will say that they got busy and cleaned the walls redid the painting, repaired the damage and concentrated on getting rid of the smoke smell which was quite extensive. All in all I would recommend having Fran do the work.because in the end the quality is there

Scott did an awesome job for me. He was quick, clean and efficient. He recently did a big victorian house for me. It was full remodel of the existing home, plus two dormers, an addition off the back and an addition off the garage. It turned out amazing. I would highly recommend him for any construction project. I will definitely call him again for any future jobs.

Mike Taylor did a fantastic job converting our expensive custom made dog crate that our Black Russian Terrier didn't want to use anymore. He replicated the trestle table picture we gave him and we now have a beautiful dining table. We can't wait to entertain and show it off!

Alex built us a custom rock climbing wall in our basement. He was amazing, and the wall is extremely structurally sound. Even my two-year-old, who doesn't like anyone, adored him! He was extremely helpful not just with the wall, but with other things around the house, simply because he was here. I cannot recommend him enough.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
