We hired ZM remodeling off of thumbtack to remove and improve our kitchen backsplash. They were quick to respond and to give a quote and contract. Long story short, Zak did a decent job, and it looks much better than our original fireplace. But it wasn’t what we wanted, and we paid full price despite the miscommunication and errors we experienced. Therefore, I highly recommend double checking everyone’s on the same page before hiring, as well as throughout the job, so you get the results you want. Details below. We hired Zak to replace our existing, builder grade fireplace surround with new stone tile. We ordered rough cut stone tile, as that was the look we wanted (photo 5). Zak explained he would have to cut some of the tiles to fit better around our fireplace, which we thought made sense. We had to step out for a bit, and when we returned home, he had already started laying the stone. But none of it had the rough cut edges anymore. It was then that we realized he’d cut the sides of every single tile, to be straight. Unfortunately, it was too late to do anything about it. So, we discussed how we could “rough up” the edges to achieve the look we wanted. He tried a technique on a few tiles that were already on the wall, but you could see his tool marks, which looked messy. Also, after Zak left, we noticed a large crack down the center of a tile at the top near the ceiling. It was clear it cracked during install. I reached out immediately to see what could be done, and he said he left it because we said we liked the cracks. To which, we explained, we liked the rough edge tile we purchased, but we obviously didn’t want cracks down the center of a tile. He said he couldn’t come back for 2 weeks to fix the cracked tile, and suggested we just do it ourselves. So, we did it ourselves. I then spent a lot of time over the next few days making the sides he cut straight, look less straight. I had to sand down the areas of stone where he left chisel marks, and filled large gaps he left at the top as well. Because it didn’t match the rest of the perfectly cut stone he laid everywhere else. Anyway, it felt like he threw in the towel a bit, to be honest. All that to say, it’s better, but not great, and we were left disappointed.
